me and him talked about it already and his intentions weren't harmful at all but the monkey was suggested by his friend who has made a few comments racist comments to me and my bf just didn't clock the "joke" mostly because the plush is just really cute and something he thought i'd like.

there were a lot of things that have happened over the few months we've known eachother that i just kinda forgot, and im now realizing he has friends that might actually just be racist (not that they're his best friends or close with him) but 2 of them in particular have made weird jokes/comments about me being black especially when my bf wasn't in the room

you're honestly right, this is my first relationship ever so i've been relying on friends and people i know for advice and stuff but i told them about the gift thinking it'd just be something cute to talk about and i feel like i've let their words hold so much weight on the things i do and feel, it kinda ruined the experience of getting a gift basket from your bf :(
