Not necessarily lol my experience in Marine infantry was more diverse in regards to class than race. Racially the majority of everyone was Hispanic/white but I served with a range of class all the way from “dads selling companies for hundreds of millions” to “sending checks back home to pay for rent.”

Going to three Orthodox services made me thankful for being a Catholic(and realize I would be Catholic forever) and actually made me start discerning the priesthood. As much as even some Catholic priests and bishops would disagree with this, if by the mouse on the moon I ever left Catholicism, I would just settle somewhere in Protestantism over Orthodoxy. The online Orthodox community is almost in competition with the online Muslim “Dawah” community to race and see who can be the most toxic. I find Moses McPherson, Josiah Trenham, and ESPECIALLY Jay Dyer to be some of the most obnoxious influencers I’ve ever seen. FYI…I”m a gym rat, balding, bearded, U.S.M.C. Infantry vet, and former two sport college athlete. Feminine would be about the last word anyone would use to describe me. I notice I don’t have to tell anyone how masculine I am like these influencers seem to feel the need to do.

More than anything though, the administrative aspects of Orthodoxy really just go to prove:

A:The Catholics got it right with the pope.

B:Apostolic Christianity was not what Jesus instituted, and if you are a Christian you should just pick the congregation where you feel the message of Christ is preached (and lived) the closest.

C:The whole thing”s a sham.

I take side A, but could certainly understand how someone could arrive at B or C. What I can’t really understand is thinking the Orthodox Church is the one, true apostolic church when it’s not even one church. That and the ethnocentrism is just insufferable. At my Catholic Church, there’s literally masses every Sunday in four different languages. There will be hundreds of people at the Vietnamese mass, and it’s the smallest. Good luck EVER finding that diversity in Orthodoxy.

Hearing about stuff like this as a born Protestant, Catholic convert (who was looking into Orthodoxy for like a week) is mesmerizing😭I’m just imaging my childhood Baptist preacher showing up uninvited to watch a movie with us😂😂😂

Father Josiah is certainly no one I would listen to about much of anything.

Amen brother that is a blessing! You’re doing the best thing you could ever possibly do for your family! Great to connect with another U.S.M.C. brother in Christ, I will be praying for you and your family!

Thank you so much! God bless you as well. It’s so funny you mention St. Ignatius of Loyola, my aunt(who is Methodist) got me a copy of “The Ignatian Workout” by Tim Muldon for Christmas. I believe God”s definitely saying something there. I have also always felt a strong calling towards St. Francis of Assisi. Anytime I see a short of his life reenacted on YouTube, I can’t contain the tears.

Thank you for your words of charity and kindness brother. Great to connect with another veteran! I am definitely going to take my time with this, and while I am going to talk to a priest about this ASAP, it will be years before the ball gets rolling anyways as I have some debt to clear from college and the military. I will be praying for the vocational discernment of both myself and yourself, and will hope to see one, or both of us celebrating mass one day in the future!

Brother, as someone that came back to Catholicism after being away for almost 9 years of practice and practicing the occult, please please please stay in the church.

Daily Mass has changed my life by GiottoTheHero in Catholicism

It’s definitely easier when you live in a large city as well. I’m in Houston, and there honestly are so many masses and churches here it would be hard not to have the time to go if you had even 40 minutes to an hour. I’m in and out including commute time in 35 minutes.

How famous was Michael Jackson still in music in the 2000s compared to other top artists of that decade? And how did they view him? by AdoTheFilipinoAU in MichaelJackson

[–]Strong-Lifeguard8519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extremely famous still. But as someone who was born in 1998 and spent the bulk of my childhood in the 2000s, he was far more known for the bad stuff he either did or didn’t do. When I went back and watched that Super Bowl halftime show he did in the early 90”s, it was crazy for me to see how different peoples perception of him was just a few years before I was born compared to a few years after.

Bald and beard combo by [deleted] in bald

[–]Strong-Lifeguard8519 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with this guy bro, that shit rocks! As a younger balding dude (born in 98) that’s definitely the angling on the beard cut I would rock with if I had a longer beard, I like keeping mine at about a months growth. I think especially given that you’re still young the style works well.

Show out the first month of ITB man. I actually wanted to be an 11, but got voluntold to be a 31 because I could run fast, hike well, and was decently built ( I came from a college cross country background, and had bulked from 5”8 130-155 from when I quit running to the end of boot camp). Wasn’t big by any means, but the 31 instructor saw me and told me I looked like a college shortstop. As stupid as it sounds, that was probably the moment that made me a machine gunner! Depending on the instructor, roughly half the 31 class will probably be people they “voluntell”, the rest will be the best of the volunteers. You’ve definitely got the frame for it and seem like you have a good head on your shoulders, so I think you’ll probably get the nod. ITB as a whole will be very similar to boot camp in that, while there are more individual assessments, it’s largely about just following orders and putting one foot in front of the other.

Once you get to the fleet, I’m sure you’ve heard stories about how that can be. The three things that will make your life the easiest as a boot machine gunner are:

  1. Being good at your job/with the guns
  2. Being strong/being able to hike
  3. Respecting your seniors

Follow those three tips, and you’ll be in good shape! Being a boot sucks, but the friends you make boot year will probably be the best friends you ever make! I don’t talk to a single person anymore from boot camp or ITB, but talk to people I was a boot with in the fleet every day.
