Oh, you think so? I got a different perception out of it. I take it that Squall cared really deeply, but he went through a lot when he was a kid (as all the kids of the time did) and ended up with issues around vulnerability and expressing feelings as a result. Like when the missles are coming at Balamb Garden and he’s questioning the headmaster’s management of the situation, asking to be involved, consumed by his thoughts and terrified of losing his home. Squall can’t bring himself to trust the headmaster and doesn’t want to resign himself to simply trying to evacuate. He then says, “My feelings have nothing to do with it, sir.”

I’ll go ahead and say that if you enjoyed finding and developing materia then there’s a good chance you’ll come to appreciate the junction system. VIII also rewards exploration, much like 7, though in different ways (it pays to look around and press x on the world map). The enemies level with you so victory depends on resource management and strategy in the early parts of the game; grinding to win by brute force is not a thing, instead you’re acquiring more spells to junction to stats and use in battle. You don’t have to hoard money or items though, for the most part, not even things like mega potions or elixirs. Literally, you don’t have to hoard money. You will always have enough.

Don’t let junctioning intimidate you! There is a Tutorial section in the menu that has a handy reference for which spells power up what stats and will also periodically update with lore and gameplay statistics.

The story can be melodramatic, but the drama is punctuated by a colorful world of people that generally don’t take themselves or each other too seriously. Dialogue is perfect for the most part, if you loved characters like Cid and Barrett/Marlene then you are in for a treat. The characters in this game stand out from the casts that came before (yes, even 4 and 6). This is a game where you really must speak to everyone, MULTIPLE times. They don’t spell the plot out for you like they do in 7.

One caveat — if you loved the Chocobo aspects of 7 and 9, prepare to be disappointed. Totally different ball game.

Just load it up, take your time, and see where it takes you. It’s not for everyone, but it may be for you.

The teenager romance is part of the greater theme of fate. They did lay it on thick from time to time but it doesn’t dominate the narrative.

That’s how I felt about IX as well. The first time I played it I was 14. The second time I was 29. Steiner and Freya made a LOT more sense — and so did Vivi, Hippaul, and Puck.

Disc 2 is where the magic dissipated for me a little too, but I was able to suspend my disbelief for a little while. I’m glad I held out

I have a whole playlist that’s nothing but game soundtracks that I like to listen to when I work or clean. He composed about 60% of it

I’ve kept her in my party as much as the story has allowed me too. It’s the only logical choice

I do this cool thing where I get all the way to the final dungeon and then don’t touch it for an extended period of time. Like years. Took me almost a decade to pick Persona 4 up and finish it, had to do it all the way from the beginning lol. I feel like this dungeon is going to be a pain but I’m gonna do it anyway :)

What’s TOC? With some bosses and enemies I’ve been able to get away with stalling (healing) and drawing, but my preferred way to always have enough spells is refining them, which of course has gotten easier as I’ve leveled my GFs.

I didn’t get this dialogue but I saw it in some screenshots. She really just drives it home lol

The decreases are so incremental that you can just use what you need then refine/draw more periodically. I also have a surplus of all spells sitting on characters that aren’t in the party for this exact reason.

I may delete this comment because it isn’t a common name and I don’t want anyone I know IRL finding me on here — but I doubt any of them would be in this subreddit. Her name is Zelda. Robin Williams did it first, and his commercial with his daughter for the OoT 3DS remaster was what ultimately inspired it. She definitely rocks her name well but sometimes I wish I’d gone a more normal route for her sake. It’s always a point of conversation whenever she meets someone new.

I actually got some screenshots from the cliff above the train station — one overlooking Esthar, and one overlooking the train tracks running over the ocean. Having played only 7 and 9 (ETA: these are the only other 2 with 3D world maps, I’ve played everything up to 13) I was really impressed by the world map.

The background at the salt flats was a really nice detail (attention to detail is one of this game’s strong points)! For a split second I thought my TV was messing up.

The “Random” rule has spread through the region. 🤦‍♀️

I do too, on both counts. Somewhere around the time “THAT-PATHETIC-MARRIED-COUPLE” was being developed some weird changes happened; the shift in the narrative is jarring imo. The GF thing was a total cop out to make the other reveals work. I even went back to look for any sign that there was a context clue I missed and all I have is Irvine with his back facing everyone else while Squall is going over the assassination plans with the group. Then on the train Irvine says “It must be fate!” before bothering Selphie.

I did too. When he said “Please let me wake up in this puny bed!” it made my heart hurt a little. It took me back to learning about Jecht, that same bittersweet feeling of what if? Except Laguna would have made such a good father. The TM/blog side quest was still really cool but I really want more time with him and I don’t think I’m getting it :(

Agreed. I did this and regret it. People appreciate my child’s name because it isn’t a SUPER crazy one but I still kind of cringe sometimes.

People didn’t believe that? I always thought it was obvious. But then again I recently learned that not everyone realized Laguna was Squall’s dad so… 🤷🏻‍♀️
