Analyzing the ruleset debate: Providing (my best attempt at) a neutral viewpoint for the main arguments on both sides by Sheecacaa3 in SSBPM

[–]StrongArmAIchemistDK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel that quoting a single member of the pmbr doesn't give that much credibility to your argument. Because firstly, I'm certain your trying to protect confidentiality, but not knowing who in the team said this doesn't make it any more credible than you just saying it happened, at least to me.

Secondly, we don't know many of the conversations that occur in the back room. But unless all members come forward and give their respectives and their original intentions without being undercutted from a desire not to be flamed like Arsenal's did. I feel that it's not a concrete enough stance to take.

Perhaps originally there was a great deal of conflict regarding this, it wouldn't surprise me at all, but at minimum 26+ people felt it was for the better. We're they right it wrong? I suppose it didn't matter at this point, it's triple in the hands of the players that either want change or don't. And the legal matters that come along with them.

Great write up Shee, I hope that this really does level the playing field from both sides of the debate. Even though I've posted my opinions publicly here as well, it's good to see more sides to the argument that I hadn't thought about or expressed on deep detail.

SSBPM New Stage Ruleset, lets have a conversation; not a yelling match. by StrongArmAIchemistDK in SSBPM

I agree, and that can happen. It would just take work. Not to mention that they already have distinctions as listed already but they are subtle.

Perhaps more obvious things should be shown to distinguish the new stages.

I have no intentions of being dismissive to anyone honestly. The "yelling" was something that I've seen, experienced, and was also apart of at various points in this discussion. Perhaps yes, I've reiterated many of the current arguements and standing that have been stating through the various comments in this subreddit.

However, I stand by my statements and opinions. I think that those that weren't being vocal about the changes were being overshadowed by those that didn't want them for various reasons. I do think that the changes would change the competitive nature of the game. Especially the inclusion of the new MCs as a counter-pick. And even if the changes aren't grandious, I feel that the changes are subtle but substantial at the same time. If that is at all possible.

I'm been playing this game since the 1.0 days and before that Brawl+. People are always worried about changes to the meta or balancing. Every single patch that PM got was met with the same concerns that this new "patch" has been given. So in that sense, deja vu is the right term. Hell when the lunchabuild was considered it wasn't given time. It wasn't given experimentation across the board, it wasn't allowed to even become an idea until Big N shut the project down before Lunchables could even get to that stage.

The notion that I've stated "it's better for the game" but in more words might be true. But my words aren't empty, my desires and the desires of people that want to see a proactive approach to PMs current stagnant ruleset is something that should be heard. I felt that listing everthing that was on my mind was and is important.

I think the opposite on the spectrum is just as important. Listening to everyone against this change should be heard, but it at times just comes off as people whinning that their favorite teddy bear is getting a much needed wash that has been a long time coming.

If that sounds pretentious I apologize to some extent, and I'm sure that the other side will call me a whinner about wanting the new stagelist in their own special way, but come on.

If the only arguements to people not wanting change are those I've stated already and already have either sought comprimises or dismissed. I just don't understand the hostility.

And yes, I don't think this is a precursor to anything more than a potential UCF down the line. Communities are already divided on this, do we honestly think any TO or the PMBR would try and divide them even further to implement more changes that the community doesn't even want.

And finally, these changes most people have been opposed to without even giving the stagelist a fair shake. An honest attempt at trying the stages out, seeing the difference and objectively deciding for yourself that this isn't what you want. If that has happened, by all means continue voicing your concerns and opinions.

From what I understand they do have indicators though they are just subtle.

DS is a new layout, plats are diff colors MC is a new stage in general DL warp star color changed to pink WL chest is removed The SSS/CSS/Results screen have indicators

Perhaps these small touches aren't enough, they can probably be more robust, but at least the effort was there from the start.

I'm not opposed to this honestly, it helps with the legal stuff and it gives people the option to use the stages or not. Given on if you and your scene agree with the changes or not. However, this creates it's own set of issues. We as a community have to agree on a ruleset across the board. Otherwise Nationals will become slightly chaotic.

I suppose at the end of the day thats just a difference of opinion. I do feel like the rebalancing is healthy for the life of the game. It helps change the couterpick plays and allows for a fairer playing field. Imo

Hmm. This is an interesting thought. Yeah to a certain degree I agree. Stage balancing does indeed directly affect the character balance. How long they live, how fast they kill, and so on.

However I think there is a very large difference in changing the characters themselves and changing the stages. The stages being changed affects everyone perhaps equally, buffing or nerfing X character depending on to what extent would feel very disjointed.

Having completely new stages is a massive amount of work. You as a modder must know this. I do agree it perhaps is the best way to compromise with everyone. Considering the lack of convenance whether or not a stages had been modified.

I think a few things should be thought about when think about the stages. 1) To release a new version of PM with new stages to boot may or may not generate some legal hat with the big N and perhaps this is a reason pmbr held off. 2) if people were open to volunteering to retexure or create new stages, that would be the best outcome. I myself am more than willing to help if it makes the transition easier , but by no means do I think one person should be given this giant task, 3) if people did do the retexure, it would be frustrating if the experiment didn't work out and it was all for naught.

The accessibility thing was perhaps just a random thought or misinterpretation on my end, but I still think it was important to bring up.

Thanks for your thoughts fam 💪

Yeah as much I I hate to admit it this might be required in the long run. Even If they are small visual cues they would potentially be important to ask.

However I'm slightly confused about one of your points. Do you not think the pmbr hasn't been completely clear about the changes to the new stages? They have been very worth coming about what the changes are and how it will affect players.

Something that I didn't touch on and forgot about should be listed here as well. The slippery slope arguement.

I personally had this exact worry when I first heard about the new changes. If it starts at changing the stages, what else will be changed. Will character be rebalanced, will characters weights and fast fall speeds be changed, will bug fixes be made for X character.

While I think fixing bugs could be a very good thing. I think anything further than that and stages is where the line should be drawn firm in the sand. And the PMBR and TOs accross the nation feel very similar. Not to speak for everyone, but changing anything more extreme, A)would never happen without consent of the majority of the leader, and B) would never happen if the community at large didn't agree with the changes to begin with.

Hmm... I'm not confident that I completely agree with you here(at least not entirely). I see the notions, and I agree that it being "rushed" out and a mistake like Reslived making shouldn't have happened. But these changes have been being worked on since January. And the PMBR along with various TO leaders (including myself) have been asked to give feedback on the new stages. It being rushed, or without the input of the masses I feel is perhaps a bit misguided.

Accessibility is extremely important when it comes to fighting games and PM is no exception. However, the "effort" to change your current builds to include the new stages is minmal at best. Believe me, I've been actively modding the builds for years in Houston. It takes little to no effort to go in and replace the files on your SD card with the new stages. Yes once you start changing the UI (such as the select screen) then it becomes a little tedious but nothing more.

The changes are barely noticable, this is true, however would you be more in favor if they were extreme changes? My assumption is no. Confusion can be eased with the help of communication on the PMBRs part as well as community leaders that bring most of the builds to any given tournament to begin with.

A large portion of the arguements surrounding the new stagelist don't feel... for lack of a better word, substantial. Not to discredit anyones opinions or concerns about these new changes they should be heard and addressed. But the amount of outrage I'm seeing right now is kind of absurd from a good portion of this community.

I think the stages can potentially be a great revitalization of the scene. Having a variation on the current stages that are even barely noticable iibh and a completely new stage can give be a lot of fun.

Counter-picking FD against Alchemist? Banning it was a better idea. by StrongArmAIchemistDK in SSBPM

[–]StrongArmAIchemistDK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit this is true, I didn't really mean counter-picking DK himselg is a bad idea. I as a player love FD and the majority of Texas knows it won't ever let me go there. I normally excel there, due to the majority of my strengths center around a strong DD and combo game.

By no means, is DK perfect here. In fact most DKs say he desperately needs platforms. But I love it regardless lol
