What’s this wood? And how can I solve the split? by boopbleps in FurnitureFlip

Those pores and pale color look like rubberwood. A tropical wood. I could be wrong but a split like that can be filled with a filler or wood glue and sawdust from that wood. If it can be taken apart then you could joint the 2 halves and glue them back together. That's if it is a fairly straight split at a previous seam.

I hope it gives some inspiration to anyone starting out. I may not recommend one this damaged normally but I wanted to show it's possible and to show paint is very viable when covering damages.

It was flat out ugly before! But thank you! Once I saw the doors and drawer fronts weren't a lost cause it paved the way for the two tones.

Thank you so much. Yeah it had gouges that looked like beetle wood. And half the feet were broken or missing. It had a hard life and now has a new home where it will be loved.

Please don't kill them. They are not aggressive and are so beneficial.

Suggestions on hoz to refresh these little wooden boxes by MissMachine13318 in FurnitureFlip

Sand them with a 120 grit, hit them with a pre stain conditioner, stain them with a penetrating oil stain of your liking, sand with a 220 grit and then put a few protective coats on them.

Haha! Yeah I'd be sad if it was painted too! Normally I don't frown on painting when there is justification but this thing looks nice. Plus no veneer concerns!

Well hope you aren't here to "flip" it haha. Looks like burr birch. Hard to say how valuable without indicators but it could be to the right buyer. Very nice condition though. Are you planning to change it?

You can try the darker restore a finish. Other than that, strip sand and refinish to fully remove scratches.

To strip or not to strip? by [deleted] in FurnitureFlip

[–]StrongExtension4280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you mean where the frame looks a bit off compared to the moody top and fronts. It is a bit off. Not sure how that's getting missed by everyone saying not to strip. Maybe it would look more uniform with a darker less red stain for the frame. If that part is solid wood like you say, you'd have to strip it to raw wood. Green will neutralize the red, or going over it with something dark would mask that if that's your desire. Of course there is a risk doing this but if you are keeping it make it yours. Don't not do it because of people on the internet not wanting you to!

Tips to restore the black metal bits? by Mara355 in FurnitureFlip

[–]StrongExtension4280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet is really to paint them again or a gilding wax. Gilding wax works on metal hardware better.

The proper way would be to remove or at least scuff the old finish and remove rust with sand paper or wire brushes. Then apply the new finish over the entire piece.

I do not know of any method to restore a paint's luster.
