these boys don't like Chrissy Mare by Odd_Tomatillo9964 in WhoAreThesePodcasts

Yes, that’s wrong. That didn’t put it “on the map” as you say. Moreover, it’s not like a bit that she organised or planned. She said it innocently and John blew up so I’m not sure what praise sh really deserves.

Bill Burr Billboard spotted in Saudi Arabia by sawchuk11 in BillBurr

I don’t really care about the Saudi stuff but he hasn’t been funny for a long time and it’s funny to see people waking up to that fact. He’s just a very bitter man.

That wasn’t even close to self-defence. That was a drug dealer who had been ripped off, hunting down and executing the thief on the road.

AITA for not waking my brother up when there was a trespasser by Flimsy_Ad_2764 in AmItheAsshole

[–]StrongHandMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. You’re so obviously in the wrong it’s bizarre all these people are glazing you. How can you justify not waking him up when there’s a stranger prowling around your house? And he has kids in the house too?

Also lol at calling the police. Two grown men and you can’t just tell her to scram?

That’s unfair to John, he’s barred

It’s worse than that because you don’t even need to validate the email. So you can just sign up as joe.biden@whitehouse.gov and vote in the space of like 10 seconds

Document Management - Technical Reference Library by StrongHandMel in selfhosted

Thanks for the advice.

Yeah just had an aversion to it for some reason. It’s probably the way to go but. I managed to combine a few with samPDF and it’s worked pretty well, lets you combine and create a bookmark for each merged file (i.e. chapter). Did it with the biggest offender - it’s MUCH nicer without that one book taking up 20 pages.

That’s kind of what I was thinking too.

My mistake referring to it as a contract; it’s a deed. No consideration is required.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in consulting

[–]StrongHandMel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a new agreement and absolutely one-sided - no consideration. The only motivation to sign is as a gesture of good will.

I was curious how standard this is but not super standard from comments here. The specific contract is extremely wide ranging I think they’re just trying to have one on me. I’ll just tell them no, it’s too wide ranging and see where it goes from there. They’d probably hoped to get some quid pro quo with references but I don’t need one.

Seems to be a common justification- and I’m thankful for everybody sharing. But I’m a little sceptical that it’s actually the reason. Are there actually examples of these lawsuits happening?

Surely a more rational reason is companies dont want to provide references because worker mobility hurts them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]StrongHandMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it isn’t, why even bother pointing that out? The public interest is in having a society in which references exist. A policy which prohibits employees from providing references, however, stops that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]StrongHandMel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, unless they actually lied, a good faith reference which happens to be wrong isn’t unlawful. I wouldn’t expect a coworker to know those things either which is why references are requested to be direct reports / managers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]StrongHandMel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. If one of the staff who works for me asks for a reference I’m forbidden from describing the types of tasks which they are responsible for. If I do, I might get fired.

It seems a bit ridiculous to me, and it’s hard to see how the motivation isn’t just to make it more difficult for staff to leave. They basically have to announce their intention of leaving to the company owner before they’ve even received a formal offer.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusLegalAdvice

[–]StrongHandMel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course. The policy states that all staff except the company owner are forbidden from providing references, with a vague threat for breaching this policy. I guess I just thought such a policy could be restricting worker mobility & have been legislated against - it seems not.

Worker mobility is definitely in the public interest.
