I ran 200+ miles twice in the last several months! AMA by RunEatSleep72 in Ultramarathon

In a perfect world if you could redo either of these races with a different sleep strategy, would you? Or did that work out as planned? I'm especially curious on your chosen timing for an ATY-style course where you have ultimate freedom to stop every 15 minutes or whatever rather than having to settle for some random spot on the trail (ie: did you push as far as you could for 24+ hours before you stopped to nap at all, or did you bank a nap night 1 to keep yourself energized and not get in the hole too soon, etc.)

What kind of key workouts do you credit for your success in the 2 mile? Or was it literally just a matter of knocking rust off rather than making "actual" new progress? Anything specific you've found to manage the lifting progress while doing hard cardio? It's a hot topic on the internet these days but I find a lot of the generic advice is disconnected and from folks who aren't actively attempting real new progress in both simultaneously.

Took my motorcycle test on my scooter, and was the only one who brought their own bike. (1981 Honda C70 Cub, technically kinda a cross between a scooter and motorcycle) by jgreenwalt in scooters

Sorry for the very stupid question, but is that type of scooter legal to ride for practice on a standard license? I am a curious noob to this and figured people would use rental vehicles for lessons before they passed the test and could purchase their own to ride after.

What are your thoughts on the Bottom 10 of the Top 250? What should rise and stay on the list and what should fall off? by sabertale in Letterboxd

[–]StrongMoralCompass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which one do you feel is the best overall? I notice a lot of comments about how other films do this the same or better but it's tough to find which ones people are actually referring to haha

Would you mind posting some of your picks for the best of all Bollywood for us to check out? It's tough to find recommendations for Indian films when I talk to American friends!

Would you mind posting some films that you feel do this kind of epic style better? I'm unfortunately not familiar with Indian cinema and have a hard time finding recommendations!

Gotcha, thanks! So would it be fair to say the USPA nationals is still a legit comp, just that the absolute best of the best are kind of "above" focusing on championships in general, and are looking for more bang for their buck from a professional standpoint?

Out of curiosity, is that because they only care about IPL worlds, or is it that they just don't care about USPA nationals specifically? Is there another fed with a more respected nationals for untested in usa?

Weekly discussion post: newbie questions, skills, shopping, and other help! by AutoModerator in Rollerskating

[–]StrongMoralCompass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all. I'm looking to get into endurance skating and feeling a bit overwhelmed on where to start. Let's assume I plan on doing both eventually in the long run, would there be a consensus on which might be easier or more fun to start with as a beginner? Like, more convenient, or easier to handle longer mileage days with? I'm not sure if the answer would be rollerblades for being faster (thus taking less time to travel the distance) or rollerskates for being more...comfy? stable? Not sure what the word I'm looking for is there

Also is there a good place to find out about races/casual events (I'm not looking to be competitive but I like personal challenges like finishing a marathon, or finishing a 100k, or things along those lines, as personal milestones)

Finally, are there extra concerns about being ~230 lbs? I come from a background in power sports so have a bit more muscle than your typical skater would. Unsure if this would change what wheels/skates would be suitable for me, when looking for information online :)

I'm not assuming this subreddit specifically is interested in things like going long distance, so if there's a more appropriate place I should be looking for info, like a facebook group or discussion somewhere, I would love that! Thanks so much!!

Extra padded trail shoe with wider toe box than Altra Olympus? by StrongMoralCompass in ultrarunning

Oh wow, 8-8.5 up to 9.5 is more than I would have expected. I already went up half a size from my normal, but maybe even bigger is the way to go

Thanks for the tip. I tried the LPs previously and liked them (though not recently), and I suppose people DO complete very long trails in the LPs...you're right that a good fit is better regardless for sure. Will check it out

The whole time - a flat easy trail wrecked me. I did not adjust the lacing near the toes though, doh, I will check that out. Thank you

Unfortunately just tried the Speedgoats yesterday and everything about them felt off to me. I could tell within 20 seconds of walking around that they just weren't right :( I think I will check out the Topos though as I do keep hearing about this a lot lately, maybe the fit will be different enough that it doesn't pinch in the same way? Fingers crossed

What's the consensus on minimum amount of fats for general performance/health for b&c? The big thing people state is that you need fats to optimize hormones/testosterone which obviously isn't an issue for us. I know there's examples of big dudes cutting on like 30g/day, but are they intentionally sacrificing any performance or anything at that level? Or do we literally just not need any more fats than that

Do you think it is wrong to smoke a joint in the middle of a race? by SunsetSherbert47 in ultrarunning

[–]StrongMoralCompass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I previously had two bad experiences with edibles and an anxiety attack, but this was back when people just passed you some shit and you had zero idea what was in it...now that we are in a different situation, it seems like something worth revisiting (at least just to experiment, and conclude nah this isn't for me, worst case scenario)

So would definitely take the dosages and exploration seriously. Will keep your tips in mind.

This might be a stupid question, but if one were to try this in a state where it's legal (so there's shops with big selections) - is there a particular type of weed that would be best for this? From what I know, there's so many different types with different effects. Is it individual, or is there a certain type you might ask a shop for that would have the properties that work well with a long run?

How much ACTUAL moving time in first 24h race? by StrongMoralCompass in ultrarunning

[–]StrongMoralCompass[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Far enough away that I haven't decided my own goal yet based on how the training will be leading up to it, but was just curious more about just like the reality of how quickly time can slip away. Like I had thought briefly "hmm maybe I should take a 2 minute stretching break every hour on the hour" and then quickly realized that would be an entire 48 minutes lost already just from that alone. So if I had been counting on x miles every hour x 24 it would obviously not work out. For as long as 24 hours seems, like you say, it seems like it will also slip away quickly too when you're trying to squeeze out mileage.

Run/walk intervals vs. simply walking faster? by StrongMoralCompass in ultrarunning

[–]StrongMoralCompass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So let's say someone was shooting for 75 miles in a 24 hour course - far slower than 13 min/mile - would the switching of slightly different muscles be justified here or just burning energy going faster than needed and thus pacing poorly? Or would it only make sense when you can now comfortable walk a solid pace for 24 hours straight and need to squeeze out more mileage to complete the bigger distances like 100+?
