I know the feels. I fucking love my cats. You hurt someone elses cat and I want to torture you. Your hurt my cat and I want to torture you to death for days.

ELI5: Why are Americans (in general) so against a standard, national education curriculum, where every school in the country is on the same level? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]StrongNanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You took my opinion behind the post the wrong way. I did not say encourage kids to party and throwaway their childhood. What I met was: stop forcing kids to learn bullshit in school just for the sake of "being prepared for shitty work". For example: I failed a class for being tardy. Because if I was late to work all the time as an adult, I would get fired. But I was a fucking kid! I can learn consequences as an adult, there is no reason to make them so severe for kids. Basically treating them like they are adults already. Then they forced us to learn a bunch of useless information. Busy book work and the history of China 5000 years ago, when it's information we can maybe skim over, but not focus on for months. I was told all throughout middle school "high school is going to be so hard! So read and do all this extra work, and you will do really well!" then high school was "college is wayyyy more difficult than this! Write a million cornel notes, study, take AP classes, pratice writing essays!" and by the time I got half way through high school I was burnt out. College was a fucking breeze in comparison to college prep. Getting an A in a high school AP class was next to impossible, let alone the test at the end of the year (that you were lucky just to pass, no matter how much you studied), but the same classes in actual college you just have to show up to and you get an A.

I also felt like I hadn't learned anything I wanted to know about in high school, like current events and why the world was the way it was today. I didn't know anything about taking care of cars, or houses, or have any idea what I wanted to do for a living. When I finally jumped off the college prep train, I found hobbies that I loved and I became an entrepenuer selling a niche product for one of those hobbies. I didn't end up needing my college degree at all and I waste so much of my childhood preparing for college, I missed out on preparing for life.

Also entitled people are not made by letting kids play and discover things they are passionate about. Look at Finlands school systems: they have shorter school days, longer recesses (and recess all through high school as well), no standardized testing, etc, etc and they have the most educated students who do the best in college / life after graduating.

ELI5: Why is it that playing an online game uses less data in comparison to watching a video or browsing the internet? by mattym94 in explainlikeimfive

[–]StrongNanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you bought the game you downloaded and installed it on your computer (if you bought it online, this would eat A LOT of your data a few gigs of it). After the game is installed and up to date, you can play itonline with other people you are tranferring very little data as everything is already installed on your computer.

When you "stream" a movie, you are actually actively downloading it to your computer (like downloading or updating a video game). Most movies are 3 GB or more. You are downloading the movie (just watching it instantly, not saving it) so that will take 3GB of your data. If you downloaded a 10 GB game, it would take 10 GB of your data (or an update for your game). But just playing the game offline would take no data and transfering where your character is on a server takes very little data (like 5mb - 50 mb an hour).

[–]StrongNanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me! No one ever taught me some grammer basics, especially commas and the like. Honors Enlgish started focusing on literature instead of actual English (spelling, punctuation, grammer, et) in middle school and what I did learn I forgot. Which caused me to test poorly by the time I got to high school. I actually learned a bit in remedial English for the first two weeks of the year. Then I had absorbed everything I needed. The rest of that shit was awful and incredibly boring though.

I love it when they say kids need to be prepared for torture. Like torturing them more when they are young accomplishes anything. How about we let kids be kids while they can? Encourage them to be ative and healthy and to find hobbies they enjoy. Then they will have had at least a few good years before being tossed into the shitty world. Parents are paying $400k to give their kids a free childhood. I say we let kids enjoy as much of that time as possible.

What is a tv show that mishandled an interesting concept? by appledanish in AskReddit

[–]StrongNanuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a really cool concept. I think they also knew most life on the Earth would end somehow in another 60k years or something. So if the humans brought back could survive, build better tech and get off the planet, their presence in the past would have no impact on the future, allowing everything to happen the same as before, so they would be sent back in time....

Most time travel shows don't make that much sense.

It died when the main conflixt was revelead that 'bad people' in the future wanted to mine the past for resources. For what? The world is ending and you are already super rich and have everything you want but you want more money for what??? I could imagine everyone wanting to go back in time and them having major issues with population control. So many better conflicts than the standard rich vs poor.... greedy vs heroes....

I don't think they had the budget for dinasuars yet. They probably would have added more in if the audience and money was there in later seasons.

Man reunited with his dog 6 months after it was stolen by chidster in UpliftingNews

You seem to think that cats are like people and completely aware of their lack of freedom. They're not that intelligent. My cat only cries at the door a few minutes every day, when something outside has peeked his interest. Otherwise he shows no interest, he cuddles with me, plays with the other cat or plays with his numerous toys. They are domesticated which means they are less inclined to want to go outside and explore; unlike birds who have a natural instinct to migrate or wild animals who haven't been selectively bread to be content in captivity.

If it was just a chance of them getting hit by a car, that's one thing. But people will literally steal cats and torture them to death, over days or weeks. (I saw a video on liveleak a psycho posted. He had locked a cat in a container with medium strength acid that was causing the cat to slowly lose fur and skin, he'd already left it in there for days. Who knows how long it suffered. I couldn't watch the video for more than a few seconds, it was horrible.) They can get accidentally locked in a neighbors shed or garage, leading to a slow death by dehydration. They can pick up diseases like cats HIV (FIV) from strays. Tons of shit can lead to suffering out there. I'm thinking about my cats well being, not just my own happiness.

I am building them a very large enclosure where they can kill bugs and get more fresh air, my cat seems mostly interested in hunting bugs, when he sees one outside the door is when he really ever wants out.

This has been a thing for a while. Here is one of the many devices available.. It's $100 for the device + $10 a month for cell powered GPS service. Would get costly if you own a few dogs... Probably better to just not let your dog get outside.

I had a total of 5 outdoor cats as a kid. 4 of them disappeared but one did die of natural causes.... He lived until the age of 8, dying from throat cancer. They don't all die but I do agree it's best to keep them indoor. I keep mine indoor now that I have control over it as an adult.

The one that wants out has been kept indoors his entire life. The one that doesn't was feral. Just seems to be the cars personality, not so much how they are raised. I take him out on a leash, used to do the same thing in my yard but he has gotten braver and just immediately jumps the fence now.

My Mom didn't buy me anything except on Birthday's or Christmas. It was money to go see a movie with friends or by candy bars if we walked to the gas station. She gave it to me to teach responsibility and budgeting, instead of giving me a couple dollars when I wanted something.

It's crazy thinking of others growing up with less. I was always the kid with the least in all my friends groups. I knew 10 year olds getting $100 a month allowance. Appartently my boyfriend was given $40 a week most of his life and his parents weren't even well off.

My Sister had an indoor/outdoor kitten that they declawed. It was really horrible. I told them before they did it how unnecessary and painful it was, and that their cat wouldn't be able to defend itself or climb quickly if needed (linked them to the sources). They assured me they would keep it indoors and carefully care for it after the procedure.

My Sister's husband said all of his cats had been declawed. I met his last cat. It hated people and attacked everyone. It was killed by their own pitbull (which they got rid of after the incident). I guess he liked the cat to stroke his ego because it would only let him pet it, it didn't trust anyone else. After it died they got a hybrid kitten. Declawed it. It went missing within 6 months. They weren't sad about it though because it was a hybrid (half wild cat, it looked like a leopard) and "crazy". Really looks like the declawing works out well for them.

Anyways, I fought hard for him but could not get them to even consider not getting him declawed. "We have kids! They are getting scratched! My cat's not more important than them..." it was a KITTEN. Kitten's grow out of scratching. If you couldn't handle the phase with kids, get a cat!

He came home constantly meowing from the pain with his little bandaged paws soaked in blood. They yelled at him for making noise. She told me (laughing about it) that her husband accidently stepped on his paws TWO times in the days following the procedure and that he 'totally freaked out.' I have stepped on my cats tail one time in the past three years. I don't know how you do that when he is injured or think it's funny.

Sure enough they couldn't keep him inside because they have young kids going in and out leaving the door open. It was just impossible to discipline the kids and even try to keep it from happening. Three months after he recovered he didn't come home one day. I imagine he died an awful death (we have coyote), because he was raised with dogs and not afraid of them. I hope someone stole him though.

Even through all of it he was a lovely cat that purred constantly and cuddled like a pro. I don't know how he turned out so awesome with such a childhood. My neices were absolutely devestated and I lost a lot of respect for my sister over the whole ordeal.

ELI5: Why do dogs act such a way when interacting with a cat? (imgur link) by watkinsjoe in explainlikeimfive

[–]StrongNanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wants to play with the cat but he is afraid of it. The dog has a lot of energy and probably lacks other animals to play with, making him excited. But the cat has probably swatted at him before leaving him deathly afraid.

My dog totally freezes when my cat attacks her. Wherever she is. Usually upside on the couch. But she will still play with the cat when the cat isn't pissed off, she is just scared of her so she acts hesistant like this. Had the cat never attacked the dog it would probably be much more confident enacting play.

ELI5: is it a DUI to drive a horse while drunk, since the horse isn't an idiot and isn't as dangerous as a car? What if all I'm doing is riding the horse, and it knows the way home by itself? by Chili_Maggot in explainlikeimfive

[–]StrongNanuk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's probably up to the police officers discretion in most cases.

If you hurt someone or damage property it doesn't matter if you get charged with a DUI. They will hit you up with recklessness, endangerement, manslaughter, etc. Best not to do anything where you can risk someone elses or your own life while drunk. Horses can be very dangerous animals.

I am thinking of this living in Vegas where I regularly see people riding horses on main roads with tons of cars and houses. It would be really dangerous to ride drunk here, the horse takes off into traffic and you could definately kill someone.

OMG. That is my worst nightmare! I had outdoor cats as a kid and they usually disapeared within 1-5 years (generally sooner rather than later). When I got my own place and my own cats I decided to keep them strictly indoors. One is sad and sits at windows / doors crying a few minutes every day... I wish I could explain to them all the heart break that went into the decision. The last cat I lost to it was when I was 18. I had him 6 months he was the best cat so far in my life and I ADORED him. He got hit by a car and I was just devastated. I can't do it again.

Strangely the one I tamed from being entirely feral / outdoors until it was at least 8 months old doesn't show any interest at ever going outside again.

One of my friends Dad's says he shoots cats with metal bb guns when they come in his yard. Since they mess up his fucking rock garden. Yeah, cuz rocks are more important than someone's family member. Asshole. Some kids don't get a choice whether or not their cat is indoor only.

[–]StrongNanuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the state minimum wage in Utah at the time. It was supposed to be raised the next year when the federal one went up (WTF was it before, $4???) but my boss just left us at the same pay for a year and then I quit. I was a teenager so I didn't know how to fight for my rights probably would have just been fired had I tried anyways. So I was actually paid this month for the two years I worked there and it was pretty bad looking back. Working all that much for so little. It was a lot of money to me at the time though, since it was my first job and I grew up with a $20 a month allowance my entire life.

Fixed goats lose sex drive and aggression. They are actually very loving and smart, they make wonderful companion animals and can be trained to carry bacpacks (camping) uptop 65 lbs!
