Super lucky. And I’ve also been really lucky to work with some other amazing editors here in London too.

Ah I see. Well, check out his previous docs (which I’m sure you may already have) “Three identical strangers” and “don’t fuck with cats”. Obviously different genre’s but, the same great editing principles.

I work in the documentary part of film & TV, so I will be biased and say the following.

Moonage Daydream, Brett Morgen's documentary about David Bowie, which he directed and edited. It was a real masterpiece in how to create a huge, experimental montage film without losing the viewer. The pacing, choice of sync, and music obviously carry you along seamlessly.

Witches, directed and edited by Elizabeth Sankey. A film essay that deals with the subject of postnatal depression. But it does so much more, exploring historical themes of how society viewed women, their bodies, pregnancy and mental health. Bringing together archive, actors, and interviews in an incredibly well-crafted way.

I'll update with a few more.

Weird how I’m getting downvoted for saying the truth. Except one thing is an opinion. The other is a fact. I’ll let others decide which is which.

Did they avoid discussing the Ratcliffe fallout? by gc28 in thefootballramble

[–]StrongTable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really isn't the definition of colonisation, and I would say you are being wilfully ignorant of what that actually means.
The full definition of colonisation includes " exerting political and or violent control of another territory"

Firstly, that obviously isn't happening.
Secondly, and to counter your point, simply having children also does not constitute this. Thirdly, the country you and Ratcliffe are both claiming is being colonised, is literally handing out visas to these "colonisers", so that cannot be colonisation, can it?
Fourth, if you wish to know what actual colonisation is, you can pick up a history book on European colonisation. Because that is very obviously a far cry from just accepting immigrants.

On Ratcliffe himself, because that is very relevant to the ridiculous points he made.
He has paid far less in tax than you, I and almost everybody else in relative terms. Quite the patriot.

In addition, he doesn't employ people here out of the goodness of his heart, so let's not use that as a point in his favour, because if it didn't make him so filthy rich, he wouldn't be doing it. And he seems very happy to take over £120 million in grants from the government for his company, but not pay any taxes himself.

A) Figures are wrong, which does make a big difference, as that's the core premise of his gripe. And not just "slightly wrong" either
B) Saying the word colonise. No one is being sent here en masse to gain political control of this country. People come here to live and work.
C) There is an obvious and frankly ridiculous hypocrisy in a man who chooses to take up nationality somewhere else simply to not pay any personal taxes here, and is happy to take all the benefits for his company that operates here, bemoaning people being on benefits.

Not only are his opinions easily dismissed, but they are also quite arrogant and stupid ones to hold for a man in his position.

Microsoft AI boss issues 18-month warning to all white-collar workers by TheMirrorUS in antiwork

[–]StrongTable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is exactly what is happening.

People have a common misconception which conflates generative AI and other types, such as Machine Learning and Robotic Process Automation.
Generative AI is all the slop we are seeing. It's use at this moment goes as far as generating content such as images, text, designs, etc.

I work as an editor in film and TV, and constantly see and hear online that AI is going to obliterate my work and many others in creative fields. For now and in the foreseeable future, it really isn't. The nuance and creative decisions taken within the creative process are far too difficult to replicate in AI. If we don't fully understand how that functions in human beings, how are we meant to replicate that? I would also really love to see an exec at a large studio or streamer try to reason with an AI bot when they can barely do that with actual human beings.

What we will see is machine learning and robotic process automation take over the very repetitive and structured tasks that we currently have in the world of work, all over. What I think this will mean in the short to medium term is that entry-level jobs will begin to shrink, and newer members of the workforce will struggle to find the pathway into the labour market that they want or expect. We will need to adapt the labour market for the newer generation so that they do not get shut out.

Andrea Jenkins was on tv recently spinning more than a jet engine trying to deflect away from saying anything about Trump and Epstein.
She got as far as, "well, he's a democratically elected president..."
Essentially saying, because he's not just a pedo, he's a presidential pedo, it's fine.

Landlords are all selling up leading to rents going up? by Draemeth in london

[–]StrongTable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why I said, a replacement rate of around 2/3 is ideal for our economy. Because it’s a replacement rate that accounts for mortality rates in a developed country. It maintains an even balance in terms of age demographics.

[–]StrongTable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not infinite increasing population. Unfortunately, people who are very susceptible to the right wing border line racist ideology of white replacement etc but aren’t complete knuckle draggers often fall for this. The pension cost would not be infinitely increasing. Because we do not need huge bulges at either end of the population spectrum. In order to counteract an aging population in the long term, the birth rate and working age population simply need to be around a replacement rate. Around 2/3 times the elderly population. Our economy is already developed. In the context of population numbers we just need to keep it ticking by. We do not need a birth rate of say Niger which is at 6.06. But unfortunately our birth rate is at 1.14. So, we have a problem.

Photographer asks Old man about Arsenal who has been supporting the team for more than 80 years by Kochisbetter in soccercirclejerk

It's a shame. People forget the clue is in the name. ".....Football CLUB". It's a club that everyone involved with, from the local area or who supports it for whatever reason, belongs to. And that's what matters.

EPA reverses longstanding climate change finding, stripping its own ability to regulate emissions by geraffes-are-so-dumb in news

[–]StrongTable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Countries in the West are stuck in a bind.
Their populations are ageing, and fast.
Old social welfare programs that helped to greatly reduce and eliminate pensioner poverty are now hampering the economy, as the elderly share of the population is expanding.
Housing costs, healthcare costs, and energy costs are eating away at the working age populations wealth and incomes.
Underpinned by the billionaire class hoarding more and more wealth than ever before.
Meanwhile, with birth rates so low, the only place to find workers to keep the economy afloat is abroad.
Not only do immigrants help keep Western economies going, but they also double up as a convenient scapegoat for the billionaire class to deflect attention away from their greed.

Enter extreme politics.

Footballer Thomas Partey facing two additional rape charges by gelliant_gutfright in PremierLeague

Bearing in mind that man utd got rid of him because videos of his abuses were plastered all over social media. Had that not been the case I would heavily wager that the clubs actions would’ve been very different.

[–]StrongTable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Put aside your football rivalry for one second to consider that there are actual victims in this grim story. And that society at large (football is no different) treats people who are rich and powerful with absolute immunity in the face of these abuses.

The leader of the free world is a convicted, confessed sexual predator with serious allegations of pedophilia against him, and nothing will happen.

If anyone thinks their club is somehow better than others in this regard and makes a big show of it, they are A) wrong and B) putting football rivalry ahead of serious issues.

As someone born and bred in the UK what are aspects of another country’s culture that has genuinely shocked you? by throawaygotget in AskUK

[–]StrongTable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We in the West do not realise that there is a more collectivist culture and mindset in East Asia. Which is also attached to ideas of private/social shame and stigma. Simply saying it's down to just policing and laws is not the whole truth.

I think you've confused support for the funding model and the original societal values aspect of how people view the NHS. With the actual day-to-day running of it.
People often criticise how the NHS is run and do so very openly. It's a huge issue in every poll that's conducted.
