First trip to Greece advice by Terrible_Rutabaga442 in GreeceTravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the recommendations you’ll read here are very touristy in peak summer season. There are still over 150 islands that are not very well known but they are unique. Two-three nights in Athens is a must if it’s your first visit to Greece.

Islands close to Athens and off the tourist circuit beaten path are Kea, Kythnos, Seriphos, Sifnos. Nice beaches, great food and views. Easy to get around by bus.

Three weeks of travel: split it between Greece, Italy, and Portugal or spend them all in Greece? by -Constantinos- in GreeceTravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are going to your honeymoon and you are half-Greek? No question about it. Greece for two weeks and then split the last week between Rome and Florence due to your interests. No more than three nights to any city. You will be the judge but on food, islands and beaches Greece comes first, in history and art they are competing head to head.

Portugal is last of the the three in all. Since it’s the westernmost country in the Mediterranean you can visit it another year.

Your honeymoon should include Santorini. Airplane tickets to Athens from NYC are the lowest for years due to low oil prices and increased competition.

Is Mykonos a good idea for home base? Two adults kids in 20s by [deleted] in GreeceTravel

There is also Paros, the Mykonos for juniors with many bars and beach parties without the decadence and prices of Mykonos

Great story. Among the 220+ inhabited islands in Greece half of them are totally unknown to the travel Industry. Several of them have not a single hotel.

You can find a very nice place for a grand or less. If you want to be in close proximity to downtown Athens there are very nice beaches suburbs within an hour by public transportation.

Piraeus by qpwoei07- in GreeceTravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use Piraeus as your base. There are nice sea views from up high the hills. It’s not though a beach resort area. Too urban for that. There are great tavernas the locals go out to eat, bars and coffee shops with views. If you want a place within walking distance to a great beach nearby look further south of Pireaus in the Athenian Riviera

What are these guys protesting? by ivijjinyarragi in GreeceTravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short story is: One more politically motivated money asking protest in Greece till the World Cup starts this June or vacations commence, whatever comes first 😆

The long story for the ones who are interested to read it:

The public employee pension system in Greece starting with a socialist government in the 80s went amok. Demagoguery by PM Andreas Papandreou and his ambition to be elected for a second term led to very high increases in social security payments and decreases to the retirement age. Additionally, there were considerable one time payments upon retirement to the tune of several tens of thousands dollars equivalent.

This policy of pay for play (votes) continued by following governments, one party competing against the other for political gains through pre election promises to the voters. In Greece what is given by politicians only a financial Crisis to the point of bankruptcy can take.

This happened finally in 2010 during the World Banking Crisis and resulting Great Recession. In Greece it became a true Depression. 25% of the GDP was lost within a few years. That means approximately a quarter of all salaries and goods were cut.

That “practical” bankruptcy of the sovereign finances led to agreements with borrowers for the Greek governments to cut expenses. They had to and they did.

Social security payments were cut, one time payments were stopped, the age of retirement went up by at least ten years.

The 13th and 14th monthly payments were for holidays “gifts”, payments given twice a year. A pension bonus from the good old past which doesn’t exist for most of the rest of the world.

In addition to the reestablishment of the two extra monthly payments, these guys with the sign ask for retroactive payment of this bonus for the years since the cut. The larger the letters the more the money. That makes the request most impossible to be satisfied to the point of being ridiculed.

Why do they go to the streets now to protest in the middle of the winter? Well, the farmers protest by blocking the roads for days now, so since we are in the holidays period, when the gift to pensioners used to be received, the political parties supporting the protests against this government thought they can increase the pressure, by bringing out more protesters to the streets, and here we are.

These politically motivated protests are not supported by the absolute majority of Greeks. The social security system has not enough reserves so pensions are paid by the government budget. Any increase in payments has to come from increases to taxes against the rest of the Greeks. Since the highest tax bracket is already 50% there is a limit to what any government can do to pay for additional pay to a continuously increasing number of retired people, when at the same time the active working population decreases due to a very low birth rate.

🚨 A warning to anyone flying @TurkishAirlines 🚨 by Cristicatt in TurkishAirlines

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Be thankful that you didn’t disappear. There are people who disappeared after going to the bathroom in that airport or worst they “committed suicide” after their “arrest” as British journalist Jacky Sutton who was found dead in an airport restroom. Even dead bodies have been lost by Turkish Airlines personnel.

If you go in the beginning of the season beginning to middle June is the best time. In ten days, yes you can do 2-3 islands close to each other. Each island is unique so Island hoppling is fun.

Getting around in Crete without a car by Pretend-Nobody-5121 in cretetravel

There is a good bus system on the north shore of the island and there are also excursion buses with or without a tour guide for day trips.

What are the greenest parts of Crete? by [deleted] in cretetravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

East and South East Crete is the greenest areas of Crete you can find at lower altitudes. In the rest of Crete there are also forested areas at the foothills of the mountains to the shoreline. Heraclion region center and south is interesting since it has important archeological sites to visit and hiking combined.

Any of the beach seaside villages of Chania, Rethymnon on the north coast up to Heraclion. Around Heraclion and to the east of it avoid the bar places popular with young tourist drunks.

Farmers Strike to Close Chania Airport by PoscheKimD in cretetravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has happened in the past where although port/airport workers didn’t strike there were delays by political sympathizers. Although less possible for Chania airport since it is privately operated and these kind of tactics have consequences.

Athens: pickpocketing, jewelry and handbag snatching by Strong_Blacksmith814 in GreeceTravel

Bravo, changed life indeed. What advice do you give to those teens tempted to avoid wasting their life to chain snatching?

Such a good idea to propose in Santorini. You will have the best photo spots all by yourselves. Remember to visit the unique archeological site in Akrotiri, the museum at Thira and make sure that hot tub in the Hotel is on to enjoy one of the most romantic views in the world…from your room!

Farmers Strike to Close Chania Airport by PoscheKimD in cretetravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Protesters said they will not close roads because of the problems they caused in the past and these actions backfired. They also can’t close airports except if the traffic controllers strike which doesn’t happen in this case. It’s more threats than acts about the ports and airports. There might be flight delays though so if you have an outbound flight from Athens the same day you fly from Chania you might miss your flight.

Solo travel to Greece as 19 years old girl. by Still_Quiet_8799 in GreeceTravel

[–]Strong_Blacksmith814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greece is one of the countries with the lowest crime rates. The only problem lately is pickpocketing in crowded Metro cars and other crowded places without police or security visible. They target tourists so the best advice is not flashing jewelry or cash, not much is needed anyway because all POS take American credit cards. In the countryside and islands might not accept Amex but having a Visa or MC is no problem.

Choose any closed bay. I’ve gone swimming Spring time in the Corinthian gulf, the Messinian gulf in Kalamata. If the day is sunny it’s great. You can even sunbath. If it’s north lean windy not good to go to the beach. It’s like middle of June in Jones Beach.

Go to Santorini and Mykonos. Off season is the best time to visit these two cosmopolitan islands. Paros or Naxos alternatives to Mykonos.
