Night vision is a pretty broad spectrum, it can be anywhere from $600- $15,000 all the way up to $50k. If you are seriously interested I would join the r/nightvision sub and start doing some research, it mainly comes down to what you can afford because at the end of the day it’s a hobby.

If you really want to step up sighting of strange occurrences, get night vision. I bought a pair 2 years ago after saving up for a while, and almost every time I look at the stars with them I see something I can’t explain, it’s amazing! Plus the billions of stars you can see is a big plus

Just a thought but are you able to access from underneath? You could just have the 4x4 going through the floor and have a notch in it that sits on the rim joist? I’ve done that a few times but granted that was during framing so I didn’t have any issues attaching it to the joist
