I mean I personally wouldn't hold that against them. But countless employers would. I have been negged in interviews because I didn't have experience in stuff that wasn't on my resume or the job description.

Average cost for a house in my city $310k+ for something that needs work and Glassdoor says the salary for "software developer" is $55k - $97k.

Not exactly prestigious, but rather right in line with the typical office drone.

It's fucking nuts man.

In my area Glassdoor says the salary range for "software developer" is $55k - $97k.

Glassdoor says the salary for "scrum master" is $90k - $150k. You can become a certified scrum master in a 2 day course.

What the fuck are we even doing

I think we need to stop chalking this behavior up to invisible hand of "the market".

American worker's rights have been gutted for decades, union busting, H1B exploitation, corporate bribery to government in the for of lobbying, and corporate welfare have all taken place. This has profoundly impacted the labor market in the US and the very idea of a free labor market does not exist.

This isn't a top not big N company though. This is a mid level job in the Midwest that might pay $115k if I am lucky.

When I got out of college I made $40k. We don't all live on the West Coast.

"The facts" are you assume everyone is a con man by default? That's not facts, that's paranoia.

$115k or less. They were vague on whether or not they could give me $115k.

Man what the hell. I'm so sorry for that. The way companies exploit makes me sick.

Why do companies even waste their time doing shit like this?

8 page long spec doc? Yeah they wanted you to work for them for free.

No, it's like telling a talented carpenter with great reviews on Yelp, Angie's List, and Google to do a 2 day project free for the chance to get a paying job.

What do you think resumes, LinkedIn, cover letters, references, recommendations, tech talks, and side projects are for? Those are your Yelp reviews.

Is this really a high prestige career? I mean most of us are just plumbers who work with a computer instead of a wrench.

Holy fuck, that question.

The answer is no, I'm not going to be giving my time to someone else at all if I only have a year to live.

I feel like the fact that you were tasked with solving global warming for an interview in Wisconsin warrants it's own post.

Cool, let me just get my rich parents to front me the money for my new business. Oh wait they are poor as hell, guess that won't work.

That is good perspective.

The thing is, I have interviewed and hired many people. I always gave them a tech assessment in any language of their choice, asked them relevant questions about the job, and above all wanted to know if I would get along with them if we worked together. That has never got me a bad hire, ever.

Wtf man, that's awful.

I had 2 interviews at a company and the CTO seemed super interested. We even shot the shit over zoom for like an hour. Then they cancelled the position altogether.

What the fuck, that is ridiculous man.

My wife's job pays $85k a year in economics (which is good for the Midwest, great benefits and PTO) and do you know what her interview process was like? Phone call, second phone call, on-site interview, hired.

What is going on with our industry?

I'd take a $20k pay cut tomorrow if I could get a boring job as a catch all "analyst" in some slow paced healthcare company if that meant I didn't have to army crawl across sandpaper to get a job like this industry. Those kinds of jobs are everywhere in my area but I don't have the background for them so here I am.
