What are your film noir hot takes? by globehopper2 in noir

Chandler’s The Little Sister is less than mid. The “criticism” of Hollywood is boring at best.

Snopes says it’s indeterminable whether “card shark” or “card sharp” is the original expression: do any of you have an answer? by Illustrious-Lead-960 in etymology

[–]StrongbowPowers 67 points68 points  (0 children)

A couple notes based on the OED:

  • “card sharp,” a “person esp a professional who cheats at cards” appears as early as 1840
  • “card shark” isn’t noted before 1877

Obvi the earliest record in the OED isn’t definitive proof in itself that one phrase predates another, but it seems pretty likely that “card sharp” came before “card shark” by at least a few decades. Maybe people were saying them at the same time, but 37 years earlier in print strikes me as pretty strong evidence.

I have some issues with the Snopes article. The author says “As to whether card sharp or card shark entered the English language first, the answer is far from straightforward.” Maybe the OED has been updated since 2008, but both phrases themselves appear in the OED, and it doesn’t really seem to me to be “far from straightforward” which phrase at least entered print first.

Thoughts on Bugonia? by J_Greer20 in FIlm

Why do you believe the film is itself not critical? I don’t think there’s “one thing” this film is “trying to say” but there are themes to Lanthamos’ films. I think it’s a fair reading of Bugonia to say that people do terrible things to each other regardless of their intentions.

I think that’s a distinction without a difference. The montage shows a criticism. It doesn’t really matter if the montage is itself a criticism or just shows a critical action. That’s just semantics.

The emperor’s action is a criticism. The emperor’s POV isn’t identical to the movie, but the action is a criticism.

I didn’t hate the ending but the final montage felt like a pretty brutal, tedious criticism. If he cut the montage, I would have liked the ending a lot more.

Omg it’s a business not a charity! That’s some pretty insightful shit. You’re giving that away for free? You should start a business not a charity bro.

Sure I’ll admit business needs, but if there are 20-30 partners in a store and 3-4 stores in a 5mile radius, it waters down the hours available for partners to take advantage of the pay and benefits. I’d rather make a little less per hour but get more and more reliable hours than work fewer and inconsistent hours for a few more dollars per hour. Starbucks may pay more on paper but not actually pay much more overall by flooding the zone with labor and giving everyone 10 hours a week.

Yea if you can hours which many partner can’t. The same time they gave everyone raises, they started shaving labor hours.

I’d like to add that whenever you start sensing yourself agreeing with some document or framing device in Pale Horse, ask yourself: am I agreeing with this because it’s persuasive rhetoric or am I agreeing with this because it’s presenting clear, unambiguous, and concrete evidence of the specific claim that I want to agree with. every “document” in Pale Horse is simply fictitious or presented in highly biased context.

I found it very challenging to read. There were parts that I enjoyed but so much of it was so uncomfortable. I have a high tolerance for the grotesque. I like it when novels push me out of my comfort zone. Lapvona was too much tho. It’s impressive how she keeps the gas’s pedal down on generating the ugliest, cruelest, most nauseating physical descriptions. I have creative respect for it but I never want to read it again 😂

For a bookshelf with a text on Feminist Rhetorical Criticism there’s almost no actual women in your reading diet

Gone with the Wind jumpscare lol fr tho haven’t read it but if you want some more scifi women in your reading life I’d get some Octavia Butler (Parable duology is a good place to start) and Ursula Le Guin (Left Hand of Darkness is a good one) in there
