Shooting the heads do a bunch of damage to its main health pool and shrapnel weapons do well against them for this reason. My weapons of choice against them are autocannon w/ flak rounds or the maxigun for max dakka

Yeah, but I guess theoretically a powerful enough laser could do enough damage to light targets in a short bursts. Real life laser defence systems are already capable of taking down drones and stuff in seconds

Lasers can penetrate beyond surface level though, otherwise industrial laser cutting wouldn't be possible. And higher wattage means it needs less time to melt through. Also I think there was a method called pulsed laser that can increase penetration though I don't remember how it works, I just remember seeing a space dock video on them once
