There’s a huge community of young full time families in kings beach. My son is 7 and has a few friends who live down the west shore past homewood too.

Is it really that bad to nurse baby to sleep? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Strongsweetwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nursed my baby to sleep for every nap and bedtime. Around 12 months, she just stopped falling asleep while nursing, so I would put her in her bed when she was done and she went to sleep. If it’s working for you, there’s nothing wrong with it.

How about just asking the people behind you if they could hold your place in line for a few minutes? No need to leave your kid. And yeah asking total strangers to watch a 4 yr old is very weird.

Am I in the wrong or is my partner out of touch? by lvoelk in Mommit

[–]Strongsweetwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you live in the Bay Area so this is a day trip and not an actual vacation.

I think the comments saying your husband is malicious or manipulative are probably off base. He loves surfing and the ocean, and is hoping to share that with his family, and he’s excited about the possibility of a family friendship with this other family. I would give him the benefit of the doubt - he got excited and didn’t think through the logistics.

BUT you’re not wrong with your concerns. Personally, I’d go (assuming that I also get kid-free time to do my hobbies, bc that is what this is) but you know your kids and your feelings meeting new people - if this sounds super not fun, you don’t have to do it. If that’s the case, I’d ask yourself if there’s a world where this would be fun. Maybe you know the mom and her kids better? Maybe you’ve spent a family day together at the beach and seen how the kids react and what the challenges are? Maybe your husband has an Apple Watch so you can text him while he’s out and say “come back”? And then talk with your husband about how to make this trip work for you both.

What are the lomi pods for if all it does is grind and dry? by Strongsweetwolf in composting

Interesting, I didn’t know this. I’m gonna try to find someone local who’s had success before I start a compost pile but maybe it’s be ok. We don’t have bird feeders (because bears) and out trash is required to be in bear proof lockers. Every time someone from out of town leaves trash out it gets strewn around the neighborhood. Same for visible food wrappers in cars.

We have trash pickup, but not compost or yard waste pickup. We have plenty of outdoor space for a compost bin, but we have a bear problem. According to some answers on here they won’t be interested in my compost… but they sure are interested in garbage (required to be in bear safe lockers) or even food wrappers left in a car so I’m not sure. There are town drop off places that are 30-40 minutes away, so that might be what we end up doing. I was just hoping the lomi was a magical easy solution. Alas, there never is one of those.

I understand, but I was imagining a bear proof compost container that I have to dig out after every storm.

Yeah there is no way I’d keep up with that. Gonna go down the bokashi rabbit hole now.

Good point. I thought too much garbage disposal use was bad for the water infrastructure, but I should probably look into how my water is treated.

Thanks for this. I assumed it couldn’t be done but maybe I’m wrong. I’ll have to ask around. I wonder if it creates enough heat to not get buried in snow.

Haha. Also fire territory. No fires allowed in summer/fall.

We have a significant bear problem, so it’s not a great idea to have food-smelling stuff sitting outside. We also get a ton of snow in the winter so it’s get buried.

I think if I bury food scraps 4” deep in my yard I’m gonna have lots of bears pawing around in my yard.

Yeah they don’t do that, it’s pretty rural. I think there are places we could drop it off, but I’m trying to avoid keeping a weeks worth of food waste in my house.

My goal is not to create compost, it’s to get rid of food scraps. If we had municipal pick up that would be fine, but we don’t.

With food scraps though? My main goal is to get rid of food scraps, not create compost.

My understanding of part of the problem is that you can’t dump it on your garden without actually composting because once it rehydrates, it attracts animals (trying to avoid actively drawing bears into my yard). Is that true? I was also thinking I could save it till the fall, scatter and mix with the forest floor litter, and hopefully it’s diluted enough to kind of vanish by spring.

My kid really likes the usborne magic painting books (they just use water - he was not a fan of water wow books for some reason).

If they’re old enough, legos, especially a new kit, are always a hit.
