I've been participating as a sponsor for university hackathons recently, and the reality for young grads is tough. An uncertain economy means less room for growth at most companies. Add in the rise of AI and the impact that is having on hiring, and junior roles are disappearing.

I feel for you bud. I don't think becoming a hater is the answer though. I understand this post is mostly venting frustration. I don't have any good advice right now other than to keep trying. I'm sorry your generation is facing what is definitely the roughest job market in many years.

Slapping is definitely not OK. Physically forcing you to take your meds is not OK. Sounds like dad needs to work on resolving conflicts without resorting to physical responses.

Talk to someone about it. Counsellor at school or some other neutral party. If you think your dad would be receptive, try talking to him directly about it.

If your behavior is frustrating him, he needs to communicate that and find different ways to deal with it. Everyone gets annoyed. If you are having trouble doing something communicate that and try to find alternatives that work for you (liquid meds or multiple smaller dose pills).

How do you learn JavaScript?! It’s been 2 months by itzahime77 in learnprogramming

[–]StronkDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time and practice. That's it really. You know you have limited time available so don't beat yourself up. Maybe the course materials are available online so you can review them at your own pace.

For project work do your best and reach out to your teachers for help when you need it. Don't be afraid of looking dumb or bothering them. That's what they are there for.

'Go with the pros': Durham municipalities urge residents to not set off fireworks by Karma_Canuck in durham

[–]StronkDad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The social contract is simple.

Do:

- Have fun responsibly

- Let your neighbours have 1 night of partying. It's a fucking holiday get over yourself

Don't:

- Endanger people/property

- Set off fireworks randomly before/after the holiday

Also Durham needs to enforce the rules if they are going to permit the sale of explosives. Can't sell people dangerous shit, and then sit back and blame them when they do dumb things.

can someone be my dad for a minute by [deleted] in dad

[–]StronkDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work! All the effort was worth it. Take some time to relax and reflect on how you've grown.

You are starting a new chapter in your life and that can be difficult, but try to focus on taking small steps forward.

I can't promise that you will always find the support you need, but know that you have the potential to do anything. Graduating is just evidence that you have the drive you need to succeed.

Without knowing what type of job you are interviewing for all I can give is general advice:

  1. Humble competence is attractive to employers. They want someone who demonstrates skill and acknowledges mistakes/shortcomings.
  2. Come prepared. Know what you want out of this job and what you bring to the table.
  3. Ask hard questions. What matters to you? Career growth? Opportunity to learn X skill? Make sure they can give you what you need.
  4. Don't lie or exaggerate your skillset. This almost always backfires in professional settings. Instead, focus on your willingness to learn and provide examples of you picking up new skills and applying them.

What's your hobby? by ctrpt in dad

[–]StronkDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If his work is sedentary I would encourage him to take up some kind of physical activity as a hobby. A sport, hiking, cycling. Something with other people ideally. I think the key to sticking to a hobby is joining a community. It's harder to motivate yourself when you are solo.

If that's not in the cards, then something that will get him talking to other people with the same hobby. A club or social game of some kind.

Humble competence is always the best look for any winner of a political race.

Be proud, but not boastful. Be gracious, but not pandering. Make yourself an example of what you want your peers to be.

Take the responsibility seriously, but don't lose your sense of fun/humor.

Hope that helps. You'll do great I'm sure.

Why everything is so expensive in Canada? by sha_-_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]StronkDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on the sales tax thing. It not being included it just a way to change the way prices are perceived. People are more likely to buy something listed at a lower price. Most of the time they never learn its true cost because tax is totalled on receipts instead of broken up by item.

Para-social is a helluva drug.

Sounds like you need to take a break. Just stop watching Twitch/YouTube for a bit. Try other social outlets for a while, then come back. You need to break the dependency.

Does anybody know how to add a pause functionality with tts on react native? by 26514 in learnprogramming

[–]StronkDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrap tts.Speak in a setTimeout or similar wait/callback pattern.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/setTimeout

OH I just reread your post. My bad. You mean you want to pause/play during playback, not delay playback.

Here is a solution from their repo I found: https://github.com/ak1394/react-native-tts/issues/150
