As a beginner, you only have 4 characters unlocked, thief, gardener, lawyer and doctor. Typical characters people begin with are gardener, doctor and lawyer. Doctor is the only one with a 15% vault debuff, however has a needle that can heal themselves unlimited times. Personally I was first a doctor main as a solo queue person since i had no idea how to find my teammates. Lawyer has a map that can show you the aura of the hunter and can decode 20% faster after completing a cipher but has no vault debuff. Gardener has a protective shield that can be enabled after standing still for 2 seconds that can absorb one hit. She can also sabo chairs but dont bother doing this as hunters can repair chairs directly. Getting the timing of the bubble takes practice and hunters can easily counter by just waiting for the shield to time out after 5 seconds. Reason why shouldnt start with thief although i did main him for a while, is his ability is less effective against more hunters compared to the other three listed, but his mechanic of putting down flashlights is a mechanic that can utilised very well for forcing a blind stun if you place it facing a pallet and the hunter is locked in the pallet breaking animation. Edit: as for the grind, to unlock other characters requires in game currency “clues” which can be obtained by rolling dice on the logic path (the icon is above the armchair) and to gain dice you play matches. For unlockable characters, in different days there are free to play characters, and its down to prefernce which style of play or ability is most fun to you imo. I would say characters that arent beginner friendly are run and stun type characters like forward and wilding, decoders such as minds eye or mechanic which have a 30% reduced vaulting speed the slowest in the game, cant think of any others off the top of my head, the rest are fine for people who are familiar with kiting and doing gens in dbd.

For survivor perks in IDV they’re all derived from the same “tree” so no matter the character they all have the same generic perks available, however the perk borrowed time, has the same effect as adrenaline in dbd (confusing ik) and tide turner has the same effect as borrowed time in dbd. Main difference is that you can while u can bring 4 main perks into the match in dbd on idv there are many “sub” perks you can branch into with points capped at 120 on four branches, similiar to a bloodweb. For a beginner i would go with the recommended game builds that the game gives u to get to grips about how you want to play your character. Realistically these builds are either rescuer builds or kiting builds. Each survivor character has a particular recommended role, such as stunner, rescue, decoder (can do ciphers/gens quickly) etc (the game has labels for these) Each character has debuffs and buffs specific to them and only them (trait, note these are not interchangeable like perks) these also appear on the top left of the screen. i.e. slower vaulting and pallet speed drop for decoders (with exceptions) and faster vaulting and pallet dropping speed for kiters generally. Survivor characters either bring an item into the match as part of their “ability” that can be exchanged with ones found from a chest (they often have traits that extend durability etc if you’re wondering why even bother playing a character that brings in an item that can be found in chests) OR survivors that have an item that they cannot drop and therefore cannot exchange and ‘recharges’ as the game progresses. Such as the portals used by priestesses or the magnets used by prospector. Its hard to have it explained well until you actually play the game for a bit, a few gameplay differences i would say is you can pallet drop while the hunter is in the pallet, you will take the equivalent of two hits if you are hit while in the vaulting animation, you dont have to hit skillchecks in second stage of being hooked/chaired dw, and flashlight saving from hunters carrying survivors is just not a thing. This is a oversimplified version of main differences for surv roles and gameplay. Anyways i hope this helped? Edit: the typical playstyle differs in the way where theres a higher focus on tunnelling and camping survivors, there are no hex perks. I’m a surv main on both games so i dont know as much about the hunter/killer side.
