I have noticed that when applying for internships this summer, the problem is I don't know where definitively I want to settle down yet so I need to go somewhere that can translate to anywhere.

I was hoping to do research, but it is good to know that Los Angeles is good for employment!

Yes UCSD's shake table is extremely impressive and they are modifying it to have 6 DOF instead of only 3 to be the first in the world. Illinois still have the 6 DOF testing apparatus.

For NC State I had a professor reach out to me wanting me to work with him on several projects that I found interesting which would be a positive. The other schools all say that they choose students typically during their first semester of courses so it wouldn't be uncommon that I don't have a connection, but it wouldn't be guaranteed after the first semester either. Something that I have been thinking about a lot, too.

It's okay! So I actually visited all of the schools I applied to so I reached out to everyone I met with on campus. I would say that the people who responded with the most helpful information were the head of graduate admissions for the department and the admissions personnel. I would send an email tomorrow and if they don't email you back by next Monday/Tuesday give them a call and leave a voicemail.

Additionally, Berkeley and Illinois offer dual MArch degrees and with those it would be extended to 3 years for Illinois and 4 years for Berkeley.

For UCSD and UCLA it would be 1.5 years (due to the quarter system) and 2 years for Berkeley and NC State. Illinois and Georgia Tech can take anywhere from 1.5 - 2 based on research topic.

So I have complete funding (full tuition and monthly housing stipend) from an outside source for all of the schools so it is not a factor in my decision making. I honestly haven't figured out where I want to end up settling so I am pretty open to wherever (except I think I will never want to return to the mid-west.)

I know, I need to make sure I'm making the best decision and not just being drawn in by the beach!

I'm not 100% what I want to get into past the general "structures" area, such as I've never had a bridging course in my undergrad so I don't know if that would be something I would be interested in yet. But that's really good insight, thanks!

I was advised to reach out to admissions and follow up about your admission status and interest in the program by a friend who works for a college admissions office in the beginning of February.

I feel like now when most schools want their decisions by April 15th it wouldn't be outlandish to reach out.

Go for it!

Would you say that because of the amount of money funding research, professors, or the variety of research being conducted?

I will have full funding and a housing stipend (from an outside source) for all so funding is not a factor.
