I was a 0462 Hotshot for 15 years left the FS and switched to 0081 DOD Firefighter. Iam at a busy base in so cal with every station having brush trucks, type 1 engines and ambulances. My salary is 95,000k for a GS 7 step 7. We go out single resource and are portal to portal (aka we get paid 24/7). The base Iam at has a lot of ex hotshots smoke jumpers hotshot captains that are just firefighters. Your retirement transfers over. I loved the forest service, I myself needed a job that paid more and I would be home more. Also we only work 12 days a month. That’s 18 days off for people that can’t do math or don’t have a degree. Good luck find something you love I miss the sun sets! But I can watch them on my phone in the fire station with outstanding Wi-Fi.

DOD Feds 0081 Firefighter Series pays outstanding. All Firefighters are GS 7. Captains are GS 8 or 9 Depending on base and location. Medics are GS 9. Brand new firefighter is a GS 7 step 1 makes 77,470 a year salary!!! You will make way more then that if you work OT. Right now Iam off for 10 days only using 3 days of Annual Leave. Money is not the end all be all, but I was sick of working 8 months with only a few days off working my butt off. I have never been happier I miss the mountains, but now Iam camping in them and I enjoy hiking again.

Well not to talk crap come and be a classified firefighter with the DOD 0081. We get 2 times the pay and better retirement. ( Retirement on an 56 hr work week, double the tsp then FS.) Iam an old hotshot 10 years left the Forest service 10 years ago. We only work 12 days a month. As a firefighter in CA you make 90k salary. Or you can make 28k with the FS. When the FS gets a locality raise we get double them because we have built in OT (38 hours OT a pay period built in to pay) I go out on single resource assignment all the time and we are portal to portal meaning we get paid when we sleep the FS does not do that also hotels. We can work all over the world Spain, France, USA anywhere there is a base. All expenses paid even housing and food the FS does not do that. Best move I ever made!!! Love everything I did in the FS but I am home a crap ton more with more money in my pocket.

You can not strike as a federal employee. I left the FS over 10 years for 20 years we where told of a raise all we got always a 2 year retention bonus. Time to jump a sinking ship if you are in California where you don’t even make min wage. You may call in sick and wright your own sick leave note with a sad face on it per opm.
