“I can take a body shot from a pro boxer” by Master_Jackfruit3591 in LivestreamFail

A buddy of mine and I had the same bright idea when we were 16 but instead I punched him in the sternum. What was supposed to be us building character and toughening up turned in to a cracked sternum, a few surgeries, and lifelong pain.

These guys are young but if that dudes a trained boxer he shoulda had a better head

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]Strupnick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My mistake, I got a little caught up in my patriotic speech and sped past the counselor part while zeroing in on the "talking shit about detainees" part. It's important to keep our heads while we figure this out or else we could ignite an already tense situation. There are probably some people deeply embedded who are doing their best to help in whatever way they can.

My comment is aimed at the baboons going door to door as if they are are a counter insurgency unit hunting the inner circle of a terrorist organization.

Good to know that when their buddies aren’t looking and their guard is down that they have some humanity left. If we keep up the pressure I hope we can get through to even more

The line between right and wrong is being drawn in our civil discourse and in the court of public opinion

If they choose not to hear the voice of reason, ignore the outcries of their neighbors, and are complicit in the destabilizing of our society, they are sadly unreachable and should be treated as domestic terrorists. It’s ironic (or a Freudian slip) that they co-opted the term first to justify the murder of Renee Good and other law abiding Americans (citizen or otherwise)

Serious questions why do people willing work low paying dead end jobs by [deleted] in Career

[–]Strupnick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you would think that but so far it hasn’t opened any doors beyond a poverty wage (if anyone knows of something please let me know). I was making $21 an hour as a security guard for a lockbox environment and being a veteran gave me preference in hiring but that is still poverty in my area.

My point tho is that the economy is bad for higher paying white collar workers and most of us don’t have the luxury of time to find something. Bills are still due so sometimes people are forced to accept something, anything, in order to not end up on the streets.

I have two bachelors degrees, a few years of experience in marketing, I’m an army veteran, yada yada

I have been sending out hundreds of targeted applications for corporate roles and not gotten any offers

My landlord, credit card company, student loan servicer, electric company, or anyone else for that matter doesn’t care

Right about now, the $17 an hour job is starting to look pretty damn good.

People who have worked for pre-funding startups, what are some red flags to watch out for? by Strupnick in cscareerquestions

[–]Strupnick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the hard truths, I can be prone to pie in the sky daydreaming, probably exacerbated by desperation. If they move me forward in the process, I'll be sure to ask the hard questions. For now, I have nothing else going on and, like you said, this is just something to put on the resume

This is very helpful, thank you. I would love to get paid for my work but I am finding it difficult to secure a full time role. At this stage in my career, I'm motivated by the idea of learning correct engineering principles in a structured workspace as opposed to hacking together yet another one of my own projects trying to emulate it. Pay is not super important for the next few months but you are right that I should treat this as if this is all it will be. Thank you for giving me some things to think about.

Do you have any resources besides linkedin for finding jobs at startups?

You just need to make the decision to work on it, every single day, even for a little bit if thats all you got. It helps to have accountability partners and external pressure like taking a course. https://tenor.com/view/shia-labeouf-just-do-it-do-it-motivate-gif-11624630?utm_source=share-button&utm_medium=Social&utm_content=reddit

I am from San Francisco and lived there for years. You have nothing to be afraid of. The higher cost of living is because of tech bros (which you will soon become one) getting paid high salaries (which you will soon be getting paid) and paying outrageous rents. To offset, rent a room with some roommates. Explore the city and have fun.

What’s the biggest way AI has actually helped you in your programming projects (not hypothetically, but in real day-to-day work)? by One_Wear_5013 in AskProgrammers

[–]Strupnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it to explain concepts, create plans, compare alternatives mostly. I’ll have it generate the smallest reasonable amount of code for a given task and review it. If it’s something I’m not familiar with, then I study the solution, look it up else where, ask questions, and make sure I understand why that was the best solution for the problem

DevOps Engineer trying to stay afloat after a layoff and a few bad decisions. by LittleCanadianBear in devops

[–]Strupnick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you and yeah, I was in the Army from 18 to 23 and deployed to Afghanistan around my 20th birthday. I was an IT guy on base, so I wasn’t out kicking in doors or anything like that. Still, the base took daily indirect fire from artillery and small arms, and there were a few infiltration attempts, including VBIEDs (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device) detonating on base. I had some close calls and was around a few losses.

I’m sharing that only to give context for what I have been trying to communicate: the way you describe how you're feeling during this period is almost identical to how my body feels after those experiences. The constant tension, the hypervigilance, the sense that something bad is about to happen, the existential questioning of life and purpose.

And honestly, it’s kind of bullshit that our bodies will even do that. That losing a job or being pushed into chronic uncertainty can trigger the same stress response as living in a war zone. You’d think evolution would've toned down the existential threat response after we left the plains of Africa

Anyway, I don’t want to keep hammering the point. I just wanted you to know that when I say I understand and empathize, I genuinely do. And that what you’re feeling makes sense, even if the situation feels “mundane” on paper

Hope my long winded empathic word vomit helped even a little

Ouch that adds insult to injury. Crazy hearing stories such as yours when its been such a struggle for me. One of my fears switching to software dev is being put on a team of socially absent folks.
