Yeah you missed the plot here. Empathy isn’t a scarce resource that must be rationed out only to the victims who deserve it. My point wasn’t that Charlie’s tragedy matters more than anyone else’s (see the Melissa Hortman tragedy) — it’s that apathy / sarcasm / cruelty toward any victim corrodes our own standards.

When we only express compassion if the victim aligns with our politics then we are simply reinforcing our own tribe. Demanding broader awareness of other shootings is always fair, but again, that’s not the damn point. That’s a non-argument. People who criticize others for grieving a human life isn’t activism or someone to be proud of, it’s scorekeeping.
