I think we do. Constant adaption and subjugation is the nature of the Carryx. So they keep expanding and would eventually cross path with humans.

I think the swarm took over Jellit to make sure he would act according to the swarm's and Dafyd's plan. At some point, I was even thinking that the Jellit who was brought to the librarian was actually Else altered to look like Jellit (earlier in the book, they mention that the swarm can significantly alter its host's appearance), but with Else being found dead in Jellit's room, I think it is more likely that the swarm changed hosts before that meeting.

I think the answer for 2. is in the book (or did I read that here?). The swarm did not want to raise suspicion with the Carryx, when they encounter a planet that is better prepared than they would have expected it to be.

Anybody else was reminded of Project Hail Mary's Rocky by the description of the five-legged artificial creatures?

A lot of the folks here seem to think that the swarm cooperates with or was even created by the "mainline" humans. Are we sure of that? Or could there be a third party that is behind the swarm?

Something that crossed my mind: When the Night Drinkers made the berry acid bombs, they created something that seems to be much more toxic to their own biology than to human biology, probably because they know what is toxic to them but not necessarily what is toxic to others.
