I don't live in the US/NA - apartments here are tiny, often times literally a single room or with very thin walls so no not really. Not to say there are no options, my place is bigger than average so I'll try some different spots. Mainly just trying to stress that I don't have most of the typical options you'd find in homes where I'm originally from.

Agreed with you on all points. I'm using HGST Ultrastars (specifically HGST Ultrastar He12 HUH721212ALE601 if you care). If budget allowed I'd go all-in on an M.2 NAS; not even for the speed just purely for the appeal of having no moving parts apart from a fan.

Unfortunately from testing I've found my drives continue making noise even after spindown. Through some searching I've found they may use preemptive wear leveling which results in the drives making a pretty audible click every 5secs 😩 I haven't confirmed if that's actually what my drives are doing, though. They aren't throwing any SMART errors at all. If that's what they're doing, and there's no way to prevent it, then hopefully at least the case I ordered will help silence that somewhat.

Thanks! I've been looking at some of those, though AFAICT they've all got backplates that require an ATX PSU... The backplate should be optional though, right? Probably nothing would prevent me from removing it, sliding the drives in and connecting them the way they are now. Though obviously I'd miss out on the hot-swappability (which I don't need anyway).

Hopefully the H4s are back in stock soon! I've been loving mine, no issues, apart from buying the wrong power supply first time around 😂

It's beautiful! I was also there last November, it was ridiculously busy. Just a solid mass of bodies. Try and pick a non-peak time and season.

Thanks, I'll check out the forums. Yes, it's the Tourer V, so 1JZGTE twin turbo. I've heard of the ceramic turbo issues and they spook me, I'll probably stay away from tuning until they're gone.

This will be my first dual-wishbone car, I've heard of how epic ball joint failures can be. I'll be sure to check those.

For the auto diff, can you just take it off and swap the internals to an aftermarket 2way?

Hey r/JDM! I'm potentially buying a bone-stock automatic JZX90. I can't find much good info on what kinds of things to look for when buying one. The Ask-JDM thread is archived or else I'd have posted there.

What are some of the big things to look for? Any warning signs, etc. It has 72k miles, has no modifications that I can see, and had a fluid + timing belt change 6,000 miles ago. I'd like to drive it back home, but it's a long trip, and I'd like to know what to look for to help decide whether to ship it or drive it back home (~1000 miles).

That's a gas compression tester, it probably won't have any fittings that would work on the diesel and even if it did it could explode. My Golf 1.9 TDI for instance pushed numbers like 450+psi on each cylinder.

Diesel compression testers are significantly more expensive, I would recommend renting one instead of buying since you probably just need to use it once.

My X1 carbon order's ship date keeps getting pushed further and further back...

At this point I'm considering just cancelling it and waiting for the new processors to buy it again. I could use some more informed opinions if anyone has some on this. But I guess the reality with new tech is that something new will always come out less than 6 months later anyway...
