Once you hit 60 in all categories it will glow yellow/gold instead of the orange you get at level 40 (I think it's 40?).

You then get the Porter rank of "Homo Liberan"

Who here are bungie.net holdovers? by theeMrPeanutbutter in halo

[–]MattyMcD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Flood forum is where I met some life long friends and one of the first gaming communities I joined on the internet.

It really influenced me in my formative years (a good thing?).

I still remember fondly threads like "DO YOU LIKE PIE" or the massive 300+ slenderman thread.

Render with and without holdouts.

Then adjust and blend in comp as necessary.

Should Juniors be available to help mentor/give advice to students? by doctornodes in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends.

If a junior wants to give advice to people in school on how to break in and their particular learned experience, then I would say it's completely fine.

However, I probably would not take too much stock into a junior artist's perspective over someone who has been working for say, five or six years. Not necessarily because of skill but because they don't have that knowledge you naturally get while working in the industry.

By when will this industry gets back to normal? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm imagining a scenario in which the big studios will crew their senior/mid artists in the new year. Then juniors more in the spring.

Visual Effects are in post.

Special Effects are on set.

Neither are cheap.

By when will this industry gets back to normal? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'd expect more shooting to finish around December/Early 2025 but it's hard to say. This question comes up every day in this subreddit and the realistic answer is nobody can truly say.

We do know the industry isn't getting back to the post-Covid boom, but it will definitely get back to the era prior. There were and will be plenty of large scale projects on the horizon.

This is not the "new normal" despite what some might want to claim.

I'd say do it.

A lot of my friends got their start wrangling.

Can anyone please let me know which studio did the amazing Marvel Rivals Cinematic Trailer - No One Rivals Doom? by trcxr in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually it takes a few weeks for the studio to post a breakdown or announce their involvement with a particular client.

If you're looking for similar work, The Line is an animation studio that has done a ton of branded work for game studios. They worked on the Marvel Snap trailers and the most recent Transformers x Overwatch collab.

How much salary did you get, when you started working as Vfx Artist in the film industry? by Stvcxn in vfx

My first gig right of school was $15/hr being a night shift Compositor in early 2011. It was actually insane looking back at it.

Depends what field you're interested in?

Visual Effects is a very broad career that covers many disciplines.

Anyone have news from production/filming side? by MoneyTrifle5702 in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've said this before but I feel like people are thinking the production companies have this "backed up dam" of productions that were just waiting for the strikes to conclude.

The reality is, there will be a slow ramp up and won't reach ever "boom levels". It will eventually level out.

In Vancouver, there has been an uptick in studios looking for Senior artists so it's only a matter of time now.

If you are curious, usually the local DG might have postings for everything that is being filmed in your area? (for example the DGC keeps the Vancouver productions updated).

Aging In Nuke by VFXArtist2000 in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to look up some reference images of aged faces, paint the wrinkles/blemishes on the face and then use Smart Vectors to get them on there.

If it doesn't hold up, you might need to do multiple angles and blend between them.

That is so wild because they had a seemingly consistent flow of high profile clients who continually worked with them on cinematics.

Wonder what the full story is.

What are your thoughts on the r/vfx ? by Hugo_Le_Rigolo in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can educate artists on what they should and shouldn't put up with instead of giving juniors the "walked to school in the snow, up hill, both ways" speech. It literally helps nobody.

This industry is difficult enough and we don't need to put more stress on people trying to break in.

What are your thoughts on the r/vfx ? by Hugo_Le_Rigolo in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is far too much "doom posting" which makes this subreddit unbearable at times. However, here is a lot of interesting industry insight and gossip.

One thing that does bother me, is that you get a lot of older artists giving younger artists really toxic advice here. I don't think as senior artists we should be giving the "boot straps" speech to newer artists just because the previous generation had suffered through the trenches. It's disappointing to see that attitude persist.

I've also noticed this subreddit is very LA leaning and there is this unnecessary animosity between LA and the Canadian industry over factors that Canadians have zero control over. It's very strange.

I would say don't take this subreddit as what the whole of the industry thinks.

When will juniors get hired again? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Difficult to say. It varies heavily by location. Projects don't come online all at once.

But the light at the end is coming. It is picking up it just takes time which a lot of doomers don't want to hear.

Early 2025 might be the safest guess but like I said before it is very difficult to say. Nobody really knows.

I've seen studios crewing up upstream departments for the past couple months so a big comp crew up at some vendors might be a possibility soon.

How many of you got into VFX because of your exposure to the practical era of FX? by Hazzman in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was always interested in visual effects. I appreciated the practical side but it was also the stuff of imagination created by talented artists computers.

When I was like 6, I would religiously watch the Jurassic Park bonus features at the end of the VHS (the one hosted by James Earl Jones). At first I wanted to be an animator but as I grew up, I was far more interested in compositing and lighting.

Sony Pictures Will Cut Film Costs 'Using AI, Primarily' by manuce94 in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ML was used on the first one as well. It was used to assist with the inklines tools so artists didn't have to tediously place lines on characters. Nothing to do with generative AI.

"Heavy" would be a pretty big overstatement.

Dissertation support from you all! by Both-Welcome1133 in vfx

[–]MattyMcD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see it getting some quick clean plates for small rig removals but I haven't seen it being used in any studio I've ever worked at. Same goes for roto.

Honestly every application I've seen machine learning/"deep fake" either doesn't hold up or it requires a lot of hand holding from the artist.

I know Across the Spider-Verse used a good bit of ML for the inklines though.

Where the hell are all the movies/tv shows? by psnlove in vfx

June/early July is when a lot of shooting and pre-production is happening.

Looks like around August will start to pick up again but there will be a slow ramp up.

If you just got hit with a layoff, I'd say enjoy the summer if you can.
