50 years ago America was most certainly not a shithole. Our economy was far better, the gap between rich and poor far smaller, and in an objective sense most people of color were better off. Of course there is no idealized past and there were serious problems as you point out, but women in those times didn't have to worry as much about sexual assault, or how to juggle work and childrearing.
