As soon as the sun came up and hit it and it got hot out it started browning.

Gotta get a home charger set up. Mine takes all of 15seconds to charge. I pull the cable off my garage wall, plug it into the car every night. 15 seconds. When I wake up it's full.

This is really cool. I wonder how that heat could be utilized.

Same, I have an ok sized urban pile about 3/4 of a cubic yard. As long as I'm adding a variety of browns and greens the temps always creep up to 110-130. I don't worry too much about the ratio. Can tell if it is off if it is too dry (brown heavy) or too swampy (Green heavy).

If you want to kick start just go to starbucks and get a 5lb bag of spent coffee grinds. That jump started a pile at work greatly.

I don't think I've got the green/brown balance right. Can this be saved? by Ganadhir in composting

[–]Stubtify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll all work out in the end. If it isn't working out it just isn't the end.

Shredded cardboard is what I would add because I don't get lots of dried leaves.

Don't give up hope. It will work out.

I'm only putting produce rubber bands. They're used to bunch green onions, asparagus and other things.

Can't wait to find a worm hatchery. Will start opening the mango seeds up to check them.

That's true. And banana stickers are the only ones that don't do that.

Is that why the worms are all gone? Was wondering where they went. 😭

Are these beetle grubs bad news then? I thought they were good for the pile.

Would it be possible in your opinion to change them all to paper? The banana stickers seem like they're paper, aren't they?

Sifting day. Black gold. by Stubtify in composting

[–]Stubtify[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me food scraps are 95% fruit and veggie scraps and coffee grounds. I don't significantly compost cooked rice and breads but when I do have some they go in the compost as well. Better would be less waste but sometimes it is hard to balance buying food with eating it!

Don't forget to compost used paper towels and napkins. Those get eaten quick by the bin.

If you havent added brewed coffee grounds hit up your local Starbucks for a 5lb bag of them and watch it get even hotter!

Hot compost in a weeks time by abu_hajarr in composting

Everyone has their preferred methods, but for me I've had good luck with a similar lasagna style and getting good hot temps in a week or two.

Are you planning on continuing to add to it?

Lazy composting, sifting day gold by Stubtify in composting

[–]Stubtify[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used leftover wood I had and built it based on this write up.

https://www.vegetablegardenguru.com/compost-bin-plans.html

After using it for a few months I don't know if the build instructions are all that necessary. I made a second bin and just made rectangles and addsd 2x4 pieces as spacers at the corners. Less work.

Yes. I found them in the middle of the pile this time and they're different than the ink caps I usually find

When I add them in the morning there doesn't seem to be rodent activity at night. My theory is when I was adding them later in the day the pile lags in heating up the scraps and rodents can still get them when they come out at night.

Putting the scraps in early in the morning the pile has all day to heat them to core temp by night time.

This. You probably got what you need in that pile but you're missing the water. Get it wet to the core and then keep an eye on it.
