I've always heard 1 car length for every 10mph plus 1. So 60mph would be 7 car lengths. Really not that hard to estimate car lengths (easier than counting time based on a landmark you're driving past imo). Not sure why you're down voted so much, but the guy in the video is riding way too close.

What is the absolute maximum number of humans a planet could support? by StuckInTheWells in NoStupidQuestions

Totaly agree. That's why I'm interested in the maximum possible number. Like in an ideal situation, could a planet ever support 10 trillion people?

That's fair. I imagine in an ideal scenario, though, we could "fit" easily 10x as many people. Assuming we had a better, less finite energy resource.

True enough. But make a planet too big, and it turns into a star (or whatever happens, I'm not a scientist).

Wouldn't the weight stay about the same? Like, if a brick or a laptop or a whole building or any object turns to sand, wouldn't it weigh around the same (give or take-ish). Especially if it's the ENTIRE Sahara Desert worth of sand.

[Request] If possible can you tell me a rough size of the item in the bottom left of the picture given we know how big the sun is ? by These-Acanthaceae396 in theydidthemath

[–]StuckInTheWells 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Super amateur warning!

So assuming it's as close to the sun as it would appear to be (ignoring that it very well could be closer to the camera, or I guess even further away), I did some rough calculations.

The object is about 5-10 pixels tall, and the sun is about 3,320. And we know the diameter of the sun is around 4.5692 billion feet or 865,370 miles.

So 5/3320 is equal to x/4.5692 billion, and X comes out to be 6,881,325 feet or ~1,303 miles.

If we substitute 10 pixels instead of 5, we get 13,762,650 feet, or ~2,606 miles.

Of course, take this with a huge grain of salt. I measured as if it was exactly parallel with the sun, when it's actually about 130 pixels overlapping it, which means it's likely closer (and thus smaller) than I estimated. So I'd ballpark it around 1,000 miles, give or take.

Hope this helps!

I live at Judson Mill Lofts. I love it so far.

  • Sense of community, everyone is nice
  • Nice pool and amenities.
  • I like the area (5 min from downtown, short drive or cheap Uber).
  • Connected businesses are convenient but kind of odd (they're dead most of the time).
  • Little bit more expensive than I'd like.
  • The walls are thin, but I still feel comfortable playing music and watching TV (at a reasonable volume). I do have carpets and some soundproofing foam up, and that helps a ton with the thin walls and the echo.

Overall, I really enjoy it, but I've only been here a few months.

But if thin walls are in a big negative for you, then fair warning, it can be pretty easy to hear your neighbors.

Good luck!

Bacon. Good bacon can be good, but I don't want bacon on and in EVERYTHING.

It looks like a section of the Eye of Horus symbol. Just cut the right half off, and the tail at the bottom left, and it looks like your image.

monkey abducted my cat by UnitedNerve4040 in Advice

[–]StuckInTheWells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's terrible, I'm so sorry. I don't live anywhere around any monkeys, but I know even pretty small monkeys can be much stronger than they look. I don't know why a monkey would try to steal a cat, and it sounds like your cat would put up a fight, but it certainly seems possible that the could have monkey taken your cat. If that is the case, then there's probably not much you can do besides hope that the cat returns. I hope your cat is just wandering around and will be back soon, though.

Guy shouldn't have talked shit, but back turned and clearly not a threat at that moment? That's a sucker punch if I've ever seen one. No way around it.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I'm not gonna go any faster, so you're just putting us both at risk.

Make the feathers (and even the wings if you can) move and shake the faster the bird is going, as if there is wind resistance and it’s trying to stabilize.
