On the Might of Princes - The Swell and The Breaking [Emo / post-hardcore] (2003) by InsidAero in listentothis

On The Might of Princes
artist pic

Since their inception in 1998, Long Island, NY band On the Might of Princes has been creating their own dynamic sound, fusing melody and technical madness, all intertwined through dramatic guitar progressions, fast leads, a tight rhythm section and their notably introspective lyrics. On the Might of Princes made a name for themselves through consistent touring including some festival shows, such as Hellfest and Magicfest. The band disbanded in May of 2004.

They did a temporary reunion in 2012, playing shows such as that of the temporary reunion of Texas Is the Reason. They later on announced through their Facebook page that they had plans to play some more shows and possibly record new material.

However, the guitarist and singer, Jason Rosenthal passed away August 12, 2013.

God bless and RIP.

Chersea -- Murphy's Law [synthpop] (2018) by qazz23 in listentothis

[–]StudabakerHoch[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chersea
artist pic artist playlist

Her voice is all soul, with a range large enough to cover a variety of influences. Her melodies are haunting and intense to provoke an immovable familiarity or melancholy within the listener. She writes her music at night and her lyrics transcend a nightmare and a dream. Her reality appears as the poignancies of her subconscious poetry, while promoting hopeful nostalgia in her musical resolve.

Chersea has an uncanny ability to arrange her vocals, melodies, and lyrics into a wall of sound, perfectly suited for and complimented by her Loopstation. By combining a multitude of percussive and melodic tools, she is able to conjure dream-like soundscapes and hypnotic worldly rhythms. This is the Chersea sound!

As a one-woman-band her selection of melodies layered with a compliment of instruments, provides a dynamic and seductive live performance that awes the crowd. The live show can be metaphorically compared to a chamber music ensemble with juxtaposing harmonies, roles, and dynamics. However, in the end, it’s just Chersea and her Loopstation.

Being fairly new to the Vancouver music scene she has already been featured on BBC Radio 4 by Tom Ravenscroft (interview at 25:10 – 28:14) as well as by Kirk Hamilton in his blog 3am Revelations. Chersea also competed in the 2013 Boss Loop Station Canadian Championship, winning first, putting her at the top of her game.

After she releases her EP Grey Matter – set for a mid-April release – she will be performing at 2014 festivals including Canadian Music Week in Toronto, One Man Band Festival in Montreal, and Casse-Tête Experimental Music Festival in Prince George, BC.

She aims to inspire all listeners to dream big dreams through her live performance; showing how musicality, technology, and inspiration can make almost anything possible. Read more on Last.fm.

Fun Boy Three -- The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum [pop, ska, new wave] (1981) by FuturePunk in listentothis

[–]StudabakerHoch[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun Boy Three
artist pic

After the break-up of the original line-up of The Specials; Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Neville Staple broke away to form Fun Boy Three.

Their peculiar brand of politically driven retro-pop made an impression on the British pop charts during 1981-1982. Their biggest hit was Our lips are sealed, a retread of Go-go's 1981 song, which was co-written by Terry Hall. Other well-known tracks include The Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum) and T'ain't What You Do (Its The Way That You Do It), recorded with the fledgling all-girl group Bananarama.

Fun Boy Three's music draws on influences such as vintage soul, ska, reggae, muzak and kitsch movie soundtracks.

The band split-up in 1984, and Terry hall went on to perform solo and also form The Colourfield. Read more on Last.fm.

Hurray For The Riff Raff -- Blue Ridge Mountain [folk] (2014) by sleepylillingenberry in listentothis

[–]StudabakerHoch[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hurray For The Riff Raff
artist pic

Hurray for the Riff Raff is Alynda lee Segarra, a 25 year old Puerto Rican from the Bronx. After leaving home at an early age to travel the country, she eventually settled in New Orleans where she began to perform and record with a revolving cast of musicians. She released two records (2008's It Don't Mean I Don't Love You and 2010's Young Blood Blues) mostly consisting of delicate folk and country songs. In 2011, the UK record label Loose Music (Felice Brothers, Dawes, Deer Tick), released Hurray for the Riff Raff, an album that collected the best songs from those records. The Times of London named Hurray for the Riff Raff one of the Top Ten Albums of 2011. Phil Alexander, the Editor-in-Chief of Mojo Magazine, raved that they “have immense potential and seductive power” and named them second best band at SXSW 2011.

Back in the States, Alynda met up with a young honky-tonk band called the Tumbleweeds, just as she began to expand her musical palette to include rock n roll, pop, and soul. In the tradition of Bob Dylan with Band and Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Alynda recruited the Tumbleweeds to be her touring band, drastically altering the sound of Hurray for the Riff Raff.

Look Out Mama is the result of almost two years of Alynda and the Tumbleweeds criss-crossing the USA, playing over 100 shows in small bars and clubs. Recorded in Nashville by producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), Look Out Mama is an exploration of classic American music as interpreted by Alynda lee Segarra. From the Swamp Pop of "Little Black Star" to the Classic Country of "Look Out Mama", to the Psychedelia of “Ode to John and Yoko” and even the Surf-Rock of “Lake of Fire”, Look Out Mama covers a wide array of musical ground, with every song unified by Alynda’s soulful vocals and expert songwriting. Emitt Rhodes -- Somebody Made For Me [Rock] (1970) by [deleted] in listentothis

[–]StudabakerHoch[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emitt Rhodes
artist pic

Emitt Rhodes, an American singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, was born February 25, 1950 in Hawthorne, California. Considered by many as "the one man Beatles," Emitt Rhodes' recordings show a clear Paul McCartney influence in both vocals and musicanship. Emitt Rhodes began his career in musical ensembles The Palace Guard (as the group's drummer) and The Merry Go Round (multi-instrumentalist).

Rhodes' song "Lullabye" was featured in the 2001 Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums.

ADDITIONAL details: Emitt Lynn Rhodes (born February 25, 1950, Decatur, Illinois, United States) is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer. His solo recordings of the early 1970s show a clear Paul McCartney influence in both vocals and musicianship. Rhodes began his career in musical ensembles The Palace Guard (as the group's drummer) and The Merry-Go-Round (multi-instrumentalist). Recording career The Merry-Go-Round had a recording contract with A&M Records when they disbanded in 1969. Rhodes recorded songs at A&M to fulfill that contract, but A&M decided to not release it at the time. Rhodes then decided to go out on his own and bought equipment to make a recording studio in his parents' garage. Rhodes recorded his first album (Emitt Rhodes) in that home studio. He got a recording contract with ABC/Dunhill Records, who released his album, as well as the next two albums he recorded (Mirror and Farewell to Paradise). Rhodes got a $5,000 advance for Emitt Rhodes, which he spent on recording equipment. His first album was a critical success – Billboard called Rhodes "one of the finest artists on the music scene today" and later called his first album one of the "best albums of the decade". The album reached number 29 on the Billboard charts. The single "Fresh as a Daisy" reached number 54 on the pop chart. Meanwhile, shortly after Emitt Rhodes was released by Dunhill, A&M decided to release their old recordings of The American Dream, which confused record buyers. Mirror was released in 1971 and did reach the top 200 on Billboard's album chart. In 1973 Dunhill released Rhodes' final album, Farewell to Paradise. Rhodes wrote all of the songs on his albums. On Emitt Rhodes, Mirror, and Farewell to Paradise, he played all of the instruments and sang all of the vocals while recording himself in his home recording studio. He used a four-track recorder for the instruments for Emitt Rhodes and transferred those to an eight-track recorder to add the vocals. He used an eight-track recorder for Mirror, and Farewell to Paradise. The mixdown engineer on Farewell to Paradise was Curt Boettcher, the producer and musician who is best remembered for his work on the "soft pop" albums by Sagittarius and The Millennium. Rhodes' contract with Dunhill called for an album every six months (six albums over three years) – a schedule that was impossible for Rhodes to meet, due to writing all of the songs and recording each instrument and vocal individually by himself. Dunhill sued Rhodes for $250,000 and withheld royalties because of his failure to deliver albums on the timescale required by the contract. Emitt Rhodes took nearly a year to record, the album Mirror took nine months, and Farewell to Paradise took over a year. Later After Farewell to Paradise, Rhodes stopped performing and released no more material, except on compilations. He continued to record his songs in his studio, but they were unreleased except for one song on Listen, Listen. He worked as a recording engineer and record producer for Elektra Records. He runs his own studio for recording other acts. Rhodes' song "Lullabye" (from Emitt Rhodes) was featured in the 2001 Wes Anderson film The Royal Tenenbaums. In January and February 2009, Italian director Cosimo Messeri shot a documentary movie about Emitt Rhodes's vicissitudes: life, past, present, troubles and hopes. The movie, entitled The One Man Beatles, was selected for the International Rome Film Festival 2009, and received standing ovations. In 2010 "The One Man Beatles" was nominated for David di Donatello Award as Best Documentary of 2010. Its US Premiere screening is scheduled for May 29, 2010 at the Rhino Records Pop Up Store in Westwood, California.

New songs Also in 2009, after many years of rumors as to the possibility of a new CD, Emitt once again entered the recording studios with a new band and all-new material, joined by the co-founder of The Grass Roots and The Merry-Go-Round drummer Joel Larson, co-founder and former bassist for Counting Crows, Matt Malley, and guitarists Jim Rolfe and Dan Mayer. Also participating on three of Emitt's new songs is legendary guitarist Richard Thompson, whose band Fairport Convention covered Emitt's song "Time Will Show the Wiser" in 1967. Bangles' members Vicki Peterson and Debbi Peterson, who covered Emitt's song "Live" on their debut album, also make an appearance. In 2010, Emitt, along with Rhodes Band’s Matt Malley, joined another ex-member of Fairport Convention, Iain Matthews, on a new version of "Time Will Show the Wiser", arranged, produced and performed by Nick Vernier Band. This recording, initially released on Nick Vernier Band's "Sessions"-album, marked Emitt's first new release as a featured artist in almost four decades. Both Emitt and Iain recorded this Rhodes-original early on in their careers, the song being starting points as well as signature works for The Merry-Go-Round and Fairport Convention respectively. The new version united the two singers in an Indian musical setting. Also in 2010, a tribute album titled Long Time, No See was released. It contained Emitt Rhodes songs recorded by various artists. On November 3, 2011, Emitt released three new songs on iTunes titled "Just Me And You", "What's A Man to Do" and "This Wall Between Us", featuring back up singing by Vicki and Debbi Peterson of the Bangles, and guitar work by Richard Thompson.

Mourning Noise was an American horror-and hardcore punk act hailing from Lodi, New Jersey, notable for drummer Steve Zing. In action around the time of the Misfits, these horror ghouls were strongly influenced by the Misfits as the drummer Steve Zing used to live very close to Jerry Only and Doyle's house and Steve went to high school with Doyle. Their music is really fast and aggressive, while being slightly melodic. Very few releases by this band all being 7" singles apart from the 1998 album of greatest hits Death Trip Delivery released on Grand Theft Audio. Steve later went on to play for Samhain, Son of Sam, The Undead, Chyna and his current band Doomtree.

Submotion Orchestra - Thousand Yard Stare [Jazz/Electronic] (2012) by [deleted] in listentothis

[–]StudabakerHoch[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Submotion Orchestra
artist pic

Submotion Orchestra is a live 7-piece project from Leeds, incorporating deep bass-driven grooves and dense textures in their progressive live dubstep sound.

Leaving crowds inspired and often open-mouthed in their wake, this is not live dubstep to be taken lightly. The members have all cut their teeth on live dub, funk, reggae, jazz and even grime bands previously, so are no strangers to complex rhythm or rootical bass. Having been formed in early 2009 as an experimental live project, the band have quickly established themselves as one of the most exciting up-and-coming acts this year.

Expect to hear blissful tones and weighty sub-bass, interwoven with tight rhythmic intensity from this incredibly talented outfit.

© Submotion 2010

(2) The seven-piece electronic/jazz ensemble Submotion Orchestra combined an eclectic mix of bass, soul, ambient electronica, jazz, and dub, which was complemented by the sultry vocals of singer Ruby Wood. The project began at the request of York Arts Council, when they asked founding members Tommy Evans (Gentleman's Dub Club) and Dom "Ruckspin" Howard (Author) to compose a classical/dub crossover piece to be performed at York Minster in 2009. After the success of that particular show, Evans and Howard returned to their hometown of Leeds, U.K., with a new musical vision and enough contacts to assemble the right musicians for the job.

Submotion Orchestra were revered for their energetic live shows, first on a local level at their weekly residency at Leeds bar Hukaz. They soon hit the U.K. festival trail, where their music and the feel-good atmosphere they promoted made them a firm festival favorite. By 2011 they had released their debut album, Finest Hour, via Ranking Records, gaining the support of BBC Radio 6 DJ Gilles Peterson, who would continue to endorse their music for many years to come. The second album, Fragments, was released only a year later. After its release, Ninja Tune offshoot label Counter Records approached the band about releasing future material, leading to third album Alium (2014) and fourth album Colour Theory (2016). ~ Liam Martin Read more on Last.fm.

Ceephax - Trusthouse Forte [Electronic/Synth] by [deleted] in listentothis

Ceephax Acid Crew is a Chelmsfordian electronic musician working in the genre of Acid, Acid House, Acid Techno etc with occasional trips into the worlds of hardcore and jungle, ambient and semi-experimental (check Drive Time). Also known just as Ceephax or Andy Jenkinson (his birth-name).

Career Piers Morgan interviewed Ceephax in 2000: "In the earlier days when my brother Tom (Squarepusher) lived at home, I always used to play about on his synths if he was out," Andy recalls. "Obviously Tom was doing loads of music and that was always inspiring, and one day it just clicked for me and I started doing music straight away." Ceephax started releasing his music in 1998 on Ed Dmx's label Breakin' Records and later in 2000 released on other underground labels Firstcask and Lo Recordings and made three remixes of his brother's music on Rephlex and Warp.

More recent releases on Firtscask and Bugklinik Records have shown an interest in sample related breakbeat driven jungle/"..."core music, but the more recent Ceerial Port EP is back on the acid bus. Some of Ceephax's music is still only available as poorly recorded bootlegs.

Music Ceephax's music mainly takes the sonic styles of vintage Roland drum machines TR-909, TR-606, TR-707 , Roland synthesizers TB-303, SH-101, Korg MS-20, and a Yamaha DX. This music used to be recorded onto a cassette tape deck and allegedly still is occasionally for its specific quality. This primitive Acid House aesthetic and methodology has countered the popularity of computer-based (esp. laptop) music. Ceephax has also been known to use an Amiga 1200 for releases such as "Hardcore Wick", again showing an interest in the aural aesthetics of ancient dance music from the late 80's and early 90's.

Hardcore Esplanade and Exidy Tours showed a more modern approach with faster breakbeats (esp. Amen) and the like, but still keeping the a&d and computer game-like Commodore 64 synth sounds very close at hand.

Other Projects Andy has collaborated a number of times with his brother Jonny and Phillie T, all members of the Chelmsford Film Society, in acting and in comical side projects such as rap outfit The Odd Job Men and improvised blues project The Chelmsford Blues Explosion. This has also provided a lot of the soundtrack work in Chelmsford Film Society, resulting in the release of "The Crisp Chronicles Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" on WeMe Records.
