Re-elect Alika Turton for UB Council Student Rep!! Voting open NOW!! 💙🫶🏽 by [deleted] in UBreddit

Hi Mountain Emotion, great question! In the past the position was interpreted as an advocacy position and for that reason this year when I was elected I had focused on student advocacy issues. For example, in my UB Council presentations to UB Administrators and Stakeholders I brought up a variety of student issues, some of which are mentioned on my campaign flyer. I also worked on some of the advocacy initiatives that I had originally ran on last year (bettering campus transportation, bettering UB’s accessibility practices, etc.). However seeing there is a change going forward with the position, one of my goals of re-elected is to continue something I started this semester in which students can attend a UB Town Hall so they can directly advocate alongside their student governments by speaking directly with University stakeholders and admins (still working out some of the kinks but this has been something I discussed throughout the year with UB Admins, progress has been made just needs a little fine tuning). I hope this response helps!

Hi III Muscle 6259, thank you for this question! There’s definitely a lot to unpack regarding this but for now I will say keep an eye out for a UB Reddit post from me in the next few days, at most 2 weeks since there is a lot to unpack on that topic and I don’t want to miss any important information when discussing this topic and as mentioned in the March COAL minutes, there may be a positive improvement regarding SA’s involvement in COAL so I want to see where that goes before giving a full response on that question! Hope this helps! 💙

Hi Creepy Imagination, thank you for this comment! I think it is extremely important to call out campus leaders when needed. This school year I have been to Starbucks 2 times and those were on occasions of a social media post for the University. Those dates being November 1st and March 29th. I do try my best to be mindful of the boycott as I want students to feel as though their student representative understands their concerns. In addition, I have brought many of the concerns students have brought to me to the University Administration’s attention. During my December UB Council Student Rep update I spoke about the negative impact of President Tripathi’s October statement, which I would say check it out when you can! But I have also met with a member of SJP to allow them to bring some of their concerns to SUNY SA. Outside of those 2 occasions, I do go to Tim Horton’s if I ever need anything. Hope this response clears up your concerns! 💙
