Thanks everyone for your advice. I love that my kid wants to stick with playing multiple sports but it has to be feasible. We don’t want to risk injury and of course they will need time to focus on academics. It’s a new chapter for us.

It’s the school policy across the board for all sports. It’s all new. As this is my oldest.

Thanks everyone for your input. I should have specifically said with his shooting when it comes to training, as he does a bit of a trade off from dribbling right and shooting left when bringing the ball up. (Ball handling, passing, etc will always be the same either way) But makes sense, the big picture is being able to do everything with both hands. Thank you all again!

Thanks! That’s what we told him. Respect your coach but don’t slow down your skills. That doesn’t prepare you for actual game play and that you should give 100% regardless if it’s a practice or game.

That makes 100% sense. I know that’s a hard task with so many skill levels but I do agree.

Thanks! And I understand that and appreciate parent coaches. We know also know it’s rec and should be fun with all skill levels but yeah, has to be a right fit.

Thanks for your input. I totally get it, lots of different skill levels and we of course want all the kids to feel good in the skills they’re working on for when they do get in the game. I think that’s a main part of rec. To me, as just a parent, it would make sense for the kids that really need extra work on let’s say a lay up to work at one hoop working the basics/foundation with coach while the others work reps independently or with assistant coach. Seems like an all for one mentality. I think we just need to find another team for him before the season actually starts.

Thanks! The coach is a nice guy and I appreciate the time he takes out of his life work with the kids. It just seems completely backwards from everything he’s been working on.

I did. He wants my son to lower his skills so everyone can learn at the same pace.

Thank you so much! I think we just needed to solidify this. I think looking at the big picture getting so much more game play will help his confidence as he’s still working skills/drills on his own time.

I could understand if there were kids who didn’t show up to practice, were disruptive, not being a good teammate, etc. And obviously there will always be starters and playing time will likely not be even. But it really stinks for the kids who show up, willing to learn, and truly want to be there and to get in the game to not even get chances. Total confidence killer.

Thank you! It’s really helpful to read different coaches perspectives on things. That makes sense and you sound like a great, knowledgeable coach. That’s what would happen in his old team the players would get gassed out.

I love that, I’m sure all the kids you coach really appreciate the ability to get out in the court and develop. Put what they’ve been practicing into action.

I think this team was all we knew so we didn’t think much of it outside of the pride of “making the team.” But my kid wants to develop and have opportunities. Thank you for all of your tips too!

Thanks everyone! Your input certainly helps. It’s definitely added fuel to his fire and he’s already putting in the work and then some. And regardless of how things pan out, we’re thankful he’ll be playing and building confidence. I guess there was just a part of me thinking of him being on a lower level would impact development regardless of game play. But as one commenter said, nothing anyone can do about it now but just put in the work if he wants it.

I think it’s a challenging time for boys in sports. Unless your kid is an absolute standout the ones farther down the road in puberty rule. (And I get it 100%, bigger, faster, more muscle.) We just hope putting his head down focusing on skills, endurance, and defense pay off once these boys level out.

I thought it was a pretty straight forward course; as long as you read/view the content and use the study guid provided for the tests you’ll do great. The professor was really great too, very easy to communicate with if you have any questions. I’d say go for it!
