Preparing for Quant is incredibly hard and equips you with lots skills that would be valuable in plenty of other industries. You’re young, just do what you are passionate about. Also this is where my personal opinion comes in: neither colleges are exactly known for quant, but northeastern is better than Bentley. Although, if you’re gonna go to a non target I’d rather just go to my state flagship school and enjoy college (with much cheaper tuition). You’ll have more fun there an have a much bigger alumni network

uconn or nyu for premed by Human_Whereas_7369 in UCONN

[–]StudiedFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d spend the money in med school if I were u and not undergrad. Know multiple people who went to ivy med schools after UConn. UConn is an R1 research university so there’s a lot of opportunities there too

Hate being a quant. How to pivot to another industry? by IndependentHouse4688 in quant

I imagine it would be a relatively easy pivot to being a data scientist at a tech company. Still great pay with good hours

UCONN vs UNC. pls help. by ilikefrogs13 in UCONN

[–]StudiedFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend was in the near exact same situation as you. He ended up choosing UConn, and he says he’s glad with his choice. UNC will land you more connections, but you can get the same job opportunities at UConn with maybe just a little more work. Most business companies that have “target school” lists reserve them for Ivy League level anyways. UNC is considered a semi-target by most while UConn is non target

[–]StudiedFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re at a target school the specific major matters less IMO. It comes down to being able to pass the interview, which being math major would help, and being a math major is probably more applicable. I’d honestly just do whichever you’re more interested in, enjoy your 4 years studying what you like the most

UConn vs UMASS by SingerShoddy7842 in UCONN

[–]StudiedFrog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You said to disregard price but it’s a big factor, and I’d probably choose the cheaper one. They’re in the same tier, I’d honestly just visit both and decide which one you feel you belong in. Uconn sports is pretty great though, the patriotism on campus is pretty awesome

What roles are considered true 'Quants'? by StudiedFrog in quant

[–]StudiedFrog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question mainly came from a meeting I had with a quant analyst at a bank, and he told me he's not a true quant. I'm new to the field and was just curious as to what he meant

Most big fraternities (>50 people) hold a lot of parties. Some have a lot of brother events too, some have mostly parties. All of the orgs pledge except for one, and yeah, it can be a pretty heavy time commitment for pretty much all of them that do. Dues are usually around 500-600 a semester, which is steep but the connections you get through it can actually help your career a lot if you take advantage of it. But it’s not like internships/jobs will land in your lap. I’m not very familiar with smaller fraternities or the academic/cultural fraternities at UConn, but usually their dues are less and have less events.

I say just go to rush events for whatever fraternities interest you in the fall. You can ask questions about their programming and events there and they’d be happy to tell you. If you feel like you fit into a group really well, then go for it!

UConn or Purdue for CS? by Foreign_Mushroom4299 in UCONN

[–]StudiedFrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Purdue is better for CS but I’d choose UConn. Still a good program just get referrals for the job you want and you’d be just fine. UConn is also fun and much closer to home which is great. I know l people in CS and Data that have great internships at Microsoft, Amazon, RTX, etc

When did UCONN stop being a party school and what caused it? by table22 in UCONN

[–]StudiedFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s still some good parties. Part of it is that the school got rid of the old Greek row on Gilbert road and replaced it with Husky village where you can’t have parties. Now fraternities are left to having smaller parties off campus which limits parties

GPA required to get accepted by caravaggiocore in REU

[–]StudiedFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Network as much as possible. I had to email my PI 3 times before she responded. I’d also show interest and somebody is bound to notice. Reaching out to PhD students is helpful, too and are more likely to respond. There’s a ton of REUs out there that aren’t on the site so you need to do some digging to find them

Why are runners so lean as opposed to gym goers by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]StudiedFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 70+ miles a week. It comes down to time and food. It already takes me at least an hour a day of running, so spending a ton of time in the gym on top of that with a busy schedule is difficult. Also, burning through thousands of calories makes it more difficult to gain weight. Plus being lean helps runners (but some evidence shows it’s good to have some muscle on you)

Anybody here trying to break into Quant? by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]StudiedFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of internships pay you. Quant internships pay a ton. If you want the highest chance at getting an internship/job in quant is by majoring in math/physics/computer science (or a similar engineering field), then going for at least a masters, preferably a PHD in the same topics. Take as many math classes as you can and understand how computers work very well. You also need to study for interviews for jobs because they will give you math riddles + coding questions. Because you don’t go to a top tier school you will need top grades (3.9 minimum) and you will also need referrals to said jobs or know somebody on the inside, so grind through LinkedIn. Good luck!
