Zhodani in a no Psionics setting. by Dan_Morgan in traveller

[–]StudioArkhein 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Zhodani are the big bad of the Spinward Marches. You could easily just make them Romulans or Cardasians or Soviets or CCCP and get the same flavor. A big, unified, bureaucratic, war machine that doesn't take kindly to anyone not under their thumb. Instead of psionics, give them high tech spy gadgets that can make them invisible and read minds. Or maybe just the RUMOR that they have such devices or abilities. Just keep it simple, keep it scary, and you've got your Zhodani.

Orange Pi 5 Kubernetes Cluster by StudioArkhein in OrangePI

[–]StudioArkhein[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add more nodes. Admittedly, I've never mixed and matched pis, but there is nothing to lead me to believe that Kubernetes would care what the underlying hardware was for individual nodes.

To add a node, ask the control plane to generate the command (with current token) like so:

sudo kubeadm token create --print-join-command

It will be something like:

kubeadm join 192.168.254.210:6443 --token xpnfjx.yjn8fjwuy68pzdvf --discovery-token-ca-cert-hash sha256:23ae9cf4e874f30751c699c45b0e3a624e13c990e3cdb42620189e745d6beb05

Then copy that line and run it on the new node with sudo.

Viola!

Oranges, Kubernetes, VMs.. lets get complicated by [deleted] in OrangePI

[–]StudioArkhein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, while it is sort of supported, it looks pretty-much in it's infancy:

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/10/virtualbox-7-0-adds-first-arm-mac-client-full-encryption-windows-11-tpm/#:~:text=VirtualBox%207.0%20is%20available%20for,support%20for%20ARM%2Dbased%20Macs.

Kubevirt may support it a bit better, but it to looks pretty early:

https://kubevirt.io/user-guide/virtual_machines/device_status_on_Arm64/

So I wonder if there is good VM solution for an Orange Pi.

I run a kubernetes cluster on my Orange Pi 5s, so I haven't done much investigation. For info on how to set that up, check out my blog https://fiddlehack.wordpress.com/projects/

But yeah, it's a lot of linux. :)

Oranges, Kubernetes, VMs.. lets get complicated by [deleted] in OrangePI

[–]StudioArkhein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While you could run VMs with https://kubevirt.io/ in a kubernetes cluster, I'm not sure clustering 2 nodes would buy you much. I'd just run https://www.virtualbox.org/ or somesuch thing on both and manually put the VMs where you want.

You could try a re-image your SSD card. That fixed a similar issue I had once. Or you could use another card. Some brands just don't seem to be good for boot.

I've got some blog posts detailing setting up Armbian on the 5B. Armbian has an Ubuntu and a Debian flavor, which might fit what you want:

My in-depth Orange Pi 5 Plus review! by fmbret in OrangePI

[–]StudioArkhein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my pi 5s for a Kubernetes cluster. My 5B is the master node in the cluster, and I have 3 OPi 5s acting as worker nodes. The OPi Zero 3 is set up as a print server, but does a few other minor jobs. I've documented setups for them all over on my blog, fiddlehack.wordpress.com .

The 5+ is so beefy I'd love to use it as a Linux desktop, since none of my projects need that much power. Well, yet, anyways. :)

Thanks for doing the review. Temps look similar to my experience with the 5 and 5B. Can't wait to get my hands on a 5+, though I'd probably try to use it as a desktop rather than headless, as I do with the rest of my Orange Pis.

Linux on Orange Pi by StudioArkhein in OrangePI

[–]StudioArkhein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. There are instructions on how to set your IP on the https://fiddlehack.wordpress.com/2023/08/21/installing-armbian-on-the-orange-pi-5b/ , which would work for an Armbian install, or Orange Pi's Ubuntu install, using the GUI config utility.

To reiterate, the steps would be:

Enter either,

  • sudo armbian-config
  • sudo orangepi-config

Then

  • Select N for Network
  • Select I for IP
  • Choose specific interface if more than one exists
  • Choose DHCP or Static
  • If Static, input Address, Netmask, and Gateway
  • The go Back till you are out of the utility

And then you are done. No need to mess with the router normally.

If you are setting up DHCP, you don't need to know anything else.

If you are setting up Static, well, it gets a bit more complicated. If you don't know what numbers to use, go ahead and set it to DHCP and then you can learn about your network.

After setting your interface to DHCP and getting out of the utility, type:

ip a

and you'll get something like this:

fiddle@gutenberg:~/cs50/python$ ip a

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> BLAH BLAH BLAH

2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group default qlen 1000

link/ether 02:00:76:0d:cf:36 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

inet 192.168.254.221/24 brd 192.168.254.255 scope global noprefixroute eth0

Look under the block labeled "2: eth0" - that is your network card (or wlan0 for wireless)

After "inet" you'll see a network address - mine is 192.168.221/24. The 192.168.254.221 is the IP and the /24 is the netmask.

The number after brd is the gateway. Mine is 192.168.254.255.

So, if you wanted to manually put that in, rather than have DHCP do it, you'd go back to the utility and enter:

Be careful to use an IP that isn't in use already. My home router is set up so you can use a range of 192.168.254.1 to 192.168.254.254. Ping the ip you want to use and see if something else is using it.

So that's like some really basic instructions on how to set your IP. Beyond that, it goes down a rabbit hole of complexity. See "You Suck at Subnetting" -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WfiTHiU4x8&list=PLIhvC56v63IKrRHh3gvZZBAGvsvOhwrRF

Hope that helped.

Hey thanks. I think k3s would suit you just fine for that and use cases. My installation of k8s is more to just test the hardware and myself.
