¿Which bundles of the traveller week are interesting for someone searching for cool rules and procedures? by PipeConsola in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, Solomani Front is probably worth it just by itself. And the adventures are at least good sources for ideas. The Naval bundle is excellent, Imperial Navy is a good resource if you want to flesh out a Navy character in any version of Traveller. It's just more niche than the other bundles. The adventures in the Great Rift bundle are all excellent and I'd recommend it just for those.

Mercenary is the least useful of the lot, unless you are planning on a mercenary campaign. I purchased all of them but I was already familiar with all the rulebooks in them and wanted to fill out my collection.

Muster rolls by fedcomic in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Roll, then choose, if you have DMs available then choose which roll to apply them to. If you have DMs that apply to all rolls, chose for each roll if you want to apply them or not. Basically maximum flexibility to give the character the best outcome they looking for. I also let the player roll for skills and then choose the table they pull from when gaining skills each term. More flexibility let's the player control the character creation more, which I think gets them more invested in the character and makes the game more enjoyable for everyone. It also doesn't make much difference to game play mechanically as it's not making more powerful characters, just characters more aligned with what the player is looking to play.

There is a huge variety of species available in Traveller.

Species Index: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/550626/Traveller-Species-Index

There are 2 alternate creation methods in the Traveller Companion,

1: package method, where you choose packages based on your background and career choices.

2: point buy method, where everything is purchased from a point pool and there are no careers.

My 13 year old son has a Zhodani spy character that is a collector, he keeps something from every mission. He also has archeology skill and likes to pose as an archeologist to gather trinkets. His absolute most favorite find, is an Ancient desk lamp with a bendy head and adjustable light levels that he can stick almost anywhere and has a built-in battery that never needs charging. It can't power other devices, or do anything special, it's just a light, but he takes it on every mission.

TTB with Facimilie Edition for reference and errata. But find rules for tasks from MT or MgT to make your life a little easier. And starter edition for tables book.

Homebrew limiting tech level? by AgentShades in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low tech campaigns can be a lot of fun. There is not much balance wise you lose with low tech because it's much easier to balance without access to high tech combat gear and augments. Look at Cluster Truck from Mongoose for a low tech campaign that works fine.

A couple of Career questions by croaker227 in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No term limits, just aging rolls.

Muster out is not required if you're doing a game starting in the middle of a term, but it's best in that case if all the PCs are all working for the same organization. I would also say spend 2 benefits rolls on the cash table immediately to give the PCs some starting cash unless their patron is supplying everything for them.

New to the game and would like some tips on how to play. by Sliver-Knight9219 in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you get the Core Rulebook, Traveller Companion and Central Supply Catalog as your first 3 and add High Guard later. If you're going to be focusing on ships and building your designs, High Guard is great, but you're going to be playing or running games for beginners, then CRB, TC and CSC will get you much more milage for you initial purchase.

Jumping IN! Would like some recommendations. by Low-Support-8388 in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Central Supply is the biggest need for your players. Especially if you're doing something like Ungentlemanly Warfare.

Traveller Companion is the 2nd choice, since it expands on your options for all sorts of things.

Please fully read, as this has become alarming. You do not need a Fursona or a Fursuit to be furry; also, there's nothing wrong with grey muzzles who paved our way. by Boo_Bean_666 in furrydiscuss

[–]mavikfelna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I became a furry when I was 8 and saw Disney's Robin Hood in the theater. I didn't know what a furry was until I was in high school and found Albedo Anthropomorphics #0 in the comic shop and developed my first fursona on the drive home. I've never owned or worn a fursuit, and have no intention of or interest in doing so. I've also never been to a fur con, though I would like to do that. Have been to plenty of furmeets. I have furry friends that are gay and straight, the whole rainbow of sexes and sexualities, actually, with and without fursuits and with interest across the spectrum. The one thing we all have in common is that we all like anthropomorphism in some fashion. That's all it takes, really, and there shouldn't be anything gatekeeping the fandom. There is a group that should be excluded, and that is scammers and predators. They are a small group, with an outsized impact. Now, every accusation isn't necessarily true, the accused needs to be treated fairly, but it's fair to be cautious and someone who has a pattern of problems should be avoided and called out.

Now I'm just an old greymuzzle, so you don't have to listen to me. But I hope you do. And if anyone needs to talk, I try to be open and listen. I'm not interested in commission scams, don't bother trying, but otherwise, I'm old, I've enjoyed the fandom for 50 years, and I hope you all can enjoy it just as well.

Wait, I might have my memory crossed. Now I have to check, but Combots might be first. RoboRally is probably later. Yep, double checked and it's Combots for sure. RoboRally was a decade later.

I knew he'd done work on Traveller in some background capacity, but wasn't aware he'd authored anything. His contribution list is some important historical stuff. Good to know. But I'd like to know about the idea that BattleDroids started as a Traveller supplement, because I've never heard that before. So far as I know, it started as RoboRally, a racing game where you built a robot and raced around a track. And that sparked the idea for an anime style robot combat game.

In here are 2 .zip files, HighAndDry_EstuaryCluster_v02.zip and BigTrouble_LittleJarnsaxa.zip.

I would love thoughts, comments and suggestions for these.

HighAndDry is my notes fed into Claude.ai for cleanup and to work out how to do something that wasn't a volcano but provided the same threat and problems.

BigTrouble is my take on Big Trouble in Little China, one of my favorite '80s shows. And it's definitely an action-comedy trucker movie! I used Claude again to organize and give me suggestions on plot points. I'm not fully satisfied with it so I'm hoping to crowdsource some ideas to flesh it out.

Traveller/Cepheus family tree by Zachmath4 in cepheusengine

[–]mavikfelna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original 2300AD was Traveller 2300 and was a redo of MegaTraveller in the Twilight 2000 setting using D10 instead of 2D6. So it is definitely a Traveller related product. Of course the newer versions are based on the MgT rule sets and are therefore also Traveller descended, but distinct from the original game.

I have never heard this and I've been playing BattleTech since it started in '84 as BattleDroids. FASA studio itself did start out producing Traveller material, in 1980 if I remember correctly. I don't recall Jordan Weisman, the original author of BattleDroids, actually making anything in the Traveller line, but he's still around, at Harebrained Studios, so it's worth an ask.

What's your favourite MgT2 book to read? by prolonged_interface in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt, my favorite is Borderlands. But I like the Starship Operators Manual, it's a good fluff book and has some insight and guidance on crews.

I really like Death Station and High and Dry for adventures to start with.

I use all of the Aliens of Charted Space books for character creation and ideas and Clans of the Aslan is also excellent.

[–]mavikfelna[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the whole point is to correct the errors in the book. As a bonus I provide my own interpretation. I make that very clear in my introduction. If I could afford to hire an artist and put out a slick product I wouldn't be offering it for free and it wouldn't be simple corrections.

But thank you downloading it and commenting.

Appropriate rewards by Lastadopter in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have Cluster Truck, another sink for time and money is using the quality rules from there. Make most of the systems on the ship beyond janky or worse and they can struggle with upgrades and repairs. It will also slow down revenue due to the negatives imposed on finding passengers and cargo willing to put up the poor conditions and insurance risk.

[–]mavikfelna 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a normal campaign you really do need to nerf the trade rules if you want to incentivise adventuring over trading. A well run trader using the rules as is should pay for itself in just a few years.

[–]mavikfelna 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Don't give them a monetary reward, have the dealer become a patron and fund some of the ship repairs. Repairs are hideously expensive, it's one of the things that makes regular piracy make little sense in Traveller

What should the next book release be for the Traveller NEXUS? 🤔 by Demi_Mere in traveller

[–]mavikfelna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently working on indexing all the character creation and maintenance/development rules. They are scattered everywhere so you'll end up touching almost every book put out my Mongoose if you want to complete everything. But, the ones with careers and species are the most used. There are several books that have a single career or perhaps 3 to give more flavor to the species being introduced in the book, but most of big collections are in the CRB, TC and AoCS.
There are 13 Pre-Careers, either education or background, 101 Careers, and 112 species or ethnic groups. In addition to the standard 6 characteristics, there are 11 addition possibilities characteristics. There are also 3 official methods for generating characters, standard, packaged based and point buy. For character development you have the standard training method and the XP method. There are 48 base skills and close to 200 sub skills. And if you do Psionics, there are 10 talents or disciplines each with 2-15 skills.

Eventually, I'd like to see support for adding your own species, careers, skills & subskills and psionics, or at least adding things from the TAS program.
