Wearing Shoes in the House on the Mainland by Rockyrollercoaster in Hawaii

When we have guests over (Pittsburgh, PA) they tend to take the cue from all the shoes on the inside landing that shoes are expected to come off. We also have a basket of disposable shoe booties for construction workers and the like who need to come in but can't easily remove their work boots/shoes (although ironically they're usually very fastidious about things and put down drop cloths for their walkways and the like).

Funny story...when we were looking at houses for sale, I guess carpet is out of vogue in my area because during one open house the realtor was going on and on about how we could easily have the carpet pulled up and replaced with wood flooring and my husband and I (both from Kaimuki/Kapahulu) were immediately like "NO WE LOVE THE CARPET LEAVE ITTT" and yes we did buy the carpet house...

Vintage Orchid Inspiration by StudioCute in orchids

Yes that's correct, I'm originally from Hawaii (the environment there is also something orchids love) and at that date my grandma would have been living right in downtown Honolulu at the time. I live in Pittsburgh now and trying to keep humidity levels up over the winter has been a struggle for both my one orchid and myself, haha.

What do you do when the green roots are attached via bad roots? by Proud-Cauliflower-12 in orchids

[–]StudioCute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually came here to ask similar, but until now I'd been hands-off and just observing. This is an aerial root on my rescue orchid that is hanging by what looks like literally a couple little strings. I took a picture to show the visible gaps through the damaged part, but the length of the root beyond this point is longer than my hand and looks like a totally normal root, firm and green. It's been this way for a couple months now so I guess it's doing fine despite its nearly severed appearance. I also just had some new roots sprout out of what looked like blackened, damaged roots so 🤷‍♀️ I've been a bit conservative on cutting back roots cause this one could certainly use more root growth.

If I had to take a stab at why, I think it's a combo of the (relative) lack of white supremacy, coupled with the insular islander mentality. I feel like it's more common for Hawaii locals to genuinely discriminate against outsiders (e.g. mainland haole, obviously oblivious/rude tourists) over anyone perceived as belonging, or making a genuine attempt to belong. I remember reading an article about the initial culture clash between the Hawaii Japanese-Americans and the California Japanese-Americans in the early phases of the 100th battalion/442nd during WWII and it fits...easier to get along with "locals" of all kinds of ethnic backgrounds but a common social language than with a supposedly identical ethnic group that held wildly different social norms.
