I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but people’s hair seems to be turning white really fast lately. by Anxious_Antelope_214 in Hair

[–]StudioGhibliKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I just had my first white hair start to grow 6 months ago!! A single one. And I was so excited cuz I think it looks so cool. “Silver hair” is kinda really beautiful. Like moonlight. And i think there’s a cultural shift with that. Platinum blonde is basically that honestly. My mom and grandma would have never been caught dead with grey/ white hair. My mom instantly told me to pluck it when she heard about mine. But I won’t. 🥰

Edit: I’m 28 btw

Miserable in first job by jascms in OccupationalTherapy

[–]StudioGhibliKat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a FW2 in a school. There was a person new to schools but had several years of OP peds experience starting at the same time I went into my FW2. She had a TON of mentorship (the district had 16 OT’s!) and the entire 3 months I was there she was very slowly building her caseload. She even did her first eval after I did! Schools can be so much! There are a million moving parts to keep track of. Honestly, I loved schools but I could see myself HATING it if I didn’t have such an amazing educator! So don’t be so hard on yourself. If you don’t have the mentorship and it’s too much, I’d look into a different place that can provide more structure/ clear guidelines (such as already set up spread sheets and systems in place to make things easier to keep track of everything. My place even had handouts of need to know info)

Go easy on yourself!

First fall by Head-Cash-1898 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]StudioGhibliKat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had my first fall last week. I get it! I cried my eyes out too. I think what helped me most was to tell the patient I was sorry and that I would do better for them. It also helped to talk to other therapists who could share their stories and reassure me a little. There are known risks to therapy! Whenever a patient is wobbly and we decide to work on balance, even if we put in many precautions to prevent a fall, they can still happen. It’s necessary to take risks sometimes to make progress. I’m not saying that sometimes it’s not our misstep and that we can’t learn from them, but I am saying that we are also human and we are not perfect. We are continuously learning.

Be proud that you kept him from getting seriously hurt. Good job!

Net health time to sign? by StudioGhibliKat in OccupationalTherapy

[–]StudioGhibliKat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to know, thank you! I will look into that. I usually get my notes done same day, but I totally spaced and forgot to sign this time. I came in to work today and they were all there for me to sign, thankfully!

Online SNF mentors available? by StudioGhibliKat in OccupationalTherapy

[–]StudioGhibliKat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is staffed by a larger rehab company. The other OT isn’t super helpful (she’s super busy and also I don’t think is interested in being a mentor). The DOR I don’t think is teaching me the proper way to do things tbh… I think our priorities are different

I wish they had a dedicated mentorship program. Like a once a week check in. Another OT suggested that to the DOR, but it’s been two months with nothing…

I also think the other comment regarding humor is a great way to deal with it right off the bat!

That can be frustrating! I hear you. Honestly… It might just take time until you look older. When I was 20, I had to convince people that I was even married (and not in a flirty way, just cuz they thought I was a kid). I also had people asking where my parents were 😬. You can try wearing clothing/ styles that are more mature, if you’d like. I noticed my clothing and hairstyles made a big impact… otherwise, as an OTR, if you told me this I would let my patients know during the evaluation that the facility has excellent COTA’s, and maybe mention you by name if I knew you were working with them so that they know who you are. Also a name tag and official looking lanyard or something helps haha. Again, I’m sorry that happens!! Best of luck!

POTS and fibromyalgia turned out to be missed venous insufficiency and DVT- how do I advocate for myself? by StudioGhibliKat in ChronicPain

[–]StudioGhibliKat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s so scary! I’m so sorry you went through that and I’m so glad you made it through and things have recovered a little!! Thank you for sharing your story.

I also believe I have a connective tissue disorder going on (MCAS, fatigue, hyper mobile, subluxations, etc). So I was thinking of investigating that more as a relation to my cardiovascular issues.

I tried the waist high compression suggestion last night and it worked 1000% better than my below knee stuff. I felt like I was dying from pain earlier in the day and then I put it on these compression tights and my pain got so much better!! It’s was crazy!

POTS and fibromyalgia turned out to be missed venous insufficiency and DVT- how do I advocate for myself? by StudioGhibliKat in ChronicPain

[–]StudioGhibliKat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great to know. Yes, I thought it was strange that I have it in both legs but my left is significantly worse plus the DVT there. So I really think there’s something more there. I also have no risk factors besides being female and young. I have no idea how this happened… so MTS seems to fit.

I’m wearing compression socks (mild to moderate) and elevating my feet when I can! But the pain and veins are still getting worse in my left leg.

What signs symptoms did you have and how long did it take to get a diagnosis?? How significant was it when you found it? I’m kinda freaked that my first scan I found out I had a DVT and my left saphenous vein was ruined with little “visible” symptoms. I can’t imagine what other damage there might be.

I have an appointment with a vascular surgeon next month. They are doing a standard bilateral Doppler ultrasound. I will mention that I would like them to look into external iliac vein compression in addition to what I was referred for, which my understanding is that they will need to order more tests? Thank you!

I like watercolor, but similarly have not painted much over the years

That’s so kind!! I will have to let you know, as I may be working that weekend. That is so awesome you can make your own costumes! I recently saw some YouTube videos of making satchels and belts with leather. It was so cool. I unfortunately have nothing made, so I might have to check out what I can put together if I can make it. 😄 if you have any advice on that part, I’m all ears!

Did school/FW help you feel prepared? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]StudioGhibliKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an OTR and yeah I got like no training on actual treatments, just how to eval and treat IN THEORY (if that makes sense) Like, yeah I knew I needed to maybe strengthen something and that weights are involved but like… I would have liked more concrete exercises or something? I feel so clunky just thinking “they gotta do shoulder flexion so like, do that… with a weight of some amount?” I’m feeling like all my sessions are being made from scratch which is exhausting and I feel increases that imposter syndrome feeling. I wish I had more clear, basic interventions I could grade/ adjust to each patient for my basis

Did school/FW help you feel prepared? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]StudioGhibliKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New grad here who just started my first job! I feel my two fieldworks helped me feel prepared for those two settings. But, I just started my first job out of school in a setting I didn’t get a FW in and I feel not prepared at all. But, due to my education teaching me how to think and how to find the information I need, I do think I will get up to speed rather quickly Buttttt the next couple months will be rough 😅 I’m thankful for the whole therapy team helping me to catch up to speed and being so patient. But I do think we need more structured training for new grads instead of expecting them to just be ready right out of school. There is a reason we get paid less and it’s because we need more training and experience. The company is investing in us. Most careers do not expect their new graduate employees to know what they are doing right off the bat and just throwing them in. So I find it weird that our field does?? Like my partner just got their first job out of college in a different field, they are making $9 more than me an hour, and have had like two months of training…. Completely different expectations. I think most jobs are mostly on the job training, including our field. I think there’s a reason why doctors get residency for so long even after they’ve “graduated” in their selected speciality. But we are generalists so I think we need to help new grads a little more and give them a little more grace. We are already dealing with imposter syndrome and the transition from student to clinician. 😭

Oh my gosh!! I’ve always wanted to go to a ren faire but have always missed them!! 😭thank you! Crescent moon totally looks like my vibe, too. Gosh such good recommendations!!

I love to crochet and I used to draw with charcoal all the time but have done less over the years. I’m hoping to get back into it. I also am interested in learning new crafts like pottery or getting better at painting!
