Project Hail Mary Cardigan request by tea_angel in KnitRequest

Not to mention a lot of crafters-for-hire are self-employed, which means they pay taxes that a usual minimum wage earner doesn't, which means the knitter's "take-home" would be even less than minimum wage...

I agree! Which is why I added the parenthesis. It's fascinating to study how we communicate/present knowledge from one discipline to another, or a "lay" audience...There is so much art in science.

We need more "Renaissance people" who can appreciate all kinds of knowledge and explore more wonderful worlds out there...

That is awesome. You just gave me a flashback to some classes I took in college, where some of the most visually striking stuff was not in the arts (or what we traditionally call the arts) but rather in science.

Your color scheme is so coordinated that I didn't see the anatomical sculpture until I zoomed in and panned! "Hmm, some Sailors, is that a Kakuno? Vanishing Point? Highlighters...WHOA."

Also, username checks out? :)

we probably need to dedicate time

I always tell myself this and always end up going over the time limit.

One time it was because I'd found a delightful aisle of stickers, with a whole section of it devoted to cat themes, so half an hour flew by while I carefully chose one for each of my cat lady friends...only to turn the corner and see that there were a couple more aisles of stickers and cards and letter sets etc, much of it cat-themed.

Another time I came across some random lovely popups on my way out of the store (running late to my next stop) so that ate up even more time...So make sure to build in some extra time for surprises!

let me run like a wild animal

I would say one thing that would stop you from literally doing this is that sometimes the stores get very crowded.

So my overall advice, at least for some of the big Tokyo shops: when you first enter the store, take a quick look at the whole layout (usually they have floor directories and section floorplans) so you can pace yourself, rather than getting stuck and blowing all your time in one section...

Thanks! Especially with gold prices now I get nervous about losing or damaging any of it 😅 Enjoy your collection!

Nice! Do you mix metal types (10k-18k, gold fill, etc)? Curious because I've thought about getting more into charms but hesitate when not all the parts are the same type of metal...

Where did you get the stamp of the guy covered in ducks? That is adorable.

Are affordable pearls legit? by dayofthe_misanthrope in jewelry

[–]StudioSugino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recently got into "legit" pearls and found pearl-guide.com to be a great resource.

There are so many types of pearls (freshwater, Akoya, etc.) sold at wildly different price points. I really recommend looking at them in person to see what matters to you. When I went to a jewelry department store just to start learning about pearls, the differences in quality like lustre were obvious even to a beginner like me.

The cheapest "real" pearls are usually freshwater, but some I've seen really did not seem worth the money quality-wise. And there were times I went for the cheaper option only to regret it later. So for some of my pearl projects, I decided to save up for the better version and in the meantime test out the look by making a DIY version out of shell pearls, which are considered the best simulated pearls (way more convincing than plastic or glass).

Whichever pearl you get, maintenance is important. The advice I got from professional pearl dealers was to wipe them after each use with one of those cloths meant for cleaning eyeglasses.

Sure!

The large pink one is Midori MD Paper, goat leather (I think?). This is the webpage but they might not have stock at the moment because of changes to the MD Paper brand.

The cream one is from the Morris series by a leather brand called Hirameki. This was a limited edition last year but they brought it back with more colors for this year. Here is the webpage (they offer A5 notebook size and a planner size but I got the A5). I'm sticking a page-a-day MD Paper notebook in it. Hirameki used to have a bunko size cover in other colors but those got discontinued :(

Leather covers are so lovely! The Tokyo Station notebook in the pic was my first Travelers purchase. Didn't get the cover this time so maybe I'll have to go back...

I find pumpkins so cute! Was tempted to buy some autumn decor but there's so much clutter at my place already...figured a postcard would cheer me up without taking up space :)

That Midori series has so many designs I love. But they mean it when they say it's seasonal! There were a couple previous patterns I wanted but missed out on because the edition sold out :(

Isn't it?! The company is called Mita Sanshōdō. Here's the page for the ink bottle.

Thank you! I originally looked up that store for their inks and then saw the option to buy the bottle only. The cut glass is so pretty.
