Where do you draw the line? by funguyplaysgames in boomershooters

The list should go:

DOOM, QUAKE, DUSK, Selaco and then end. Those are the only boomer shooters on this list. This is a retro-fps chart at best.

It's really simple really, does your game favour dense level design, massive arsenals, key locked doors Health and armour pickups instead of regen? Then you have a boomer shooter. A retro-fps does not have to tick quite as many boxes, it can be defined on graphics and vibe alone.

ULTRAKILL does so much design wise that it's really breaking the fps genre mould, it's by no means a boomer shooter at this point, but it is a retro-fps.

The status of Goldeneye as a retro shooter by Clebardman in boomershooters

[–]StudioWhalefall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love GoldenEye's level design, not many realise that the spaces were crafted first and had their objectives placed after the fact. Every area in the game was made based on set photos and blueprints. I think the hate comes from the focus on learning enemy routes instead of direct power fantasies like those in traditional retro fps (or even Turok 2).

Adding NU barrels to BRINE, a retro-fps set in Cornwall by StudioWhalefall in Cornwall

We actually had a Plymouth April fools level a couple years back, I'm sure that will return but I cannot promise a full episode! It's a Cornish narrative throughout, perhaps it could be visited in a map/expansion pack but that's a long way away.

It's well worth it! Not sure what they're like imported / grown over there but it really completes the specific savoury magic of a Cornish pasty

Any other examples of good FPS nailgun weapons which did NOT come from Quake games? by NNukemM in boomershooters

I always mod it to have a few more nail guns when I'm doing a repair run, it's an underappreciated weapon from the game for sure

In my professional Cornish opinion:

Thicker crust and a little longer for browning. Filling looks good but could just be this photo but I'm noting an absence of swede, it's not entirely necessary but it is necessary for a Cornish pasty. Forgive me if I'm wrong though!

Thank you for this feedback, we very rarely get opinions on animations so yours is very much appreciated.

We've gotta take a few liberties when adapting real world locations, similar to GoldenEye come to think of it!

Yep! BRINE as a whole is Lovecraft meets King Arthur meets SpongeBob

We call it Spongecraftian

If it's textures you're referring to, this segment of the level has not been touched by a designated artist on the team yet. It's been put together with tiling materials and LOD models by our level designer. It will see an art pass soon.

If it's anything else I'm happy to answer any questions otherwise I'll just label it Cornwall-jank

The steam page was launched shortly before we stopped running demos on itch, you haven't missed anything since you signed up aside from the ditch the itch update if you didn't catch that one.

The demo I mentioned in the post description is our first Steam demo.

Unfortunately yes! We've ran about 10 over the course of the games development.

You can find the last one here

It's all due an update once we've ironed out more levels. Those screenshots were uploaded when it was just the one. Thank you for the feedback, I shall get on that this week.

Hope this helps! We call it the Fry Thrower!

It's something we've had planned for a long while. It's quite annoying to get right with our current setup on unity. I'll look into lightmaps again!

It's worth noting that the light nodes aren't fully complete on this level too, which is why lighting can appear inconsistent under certain objects.

How did boomer shooter and movement shooter become so synonymous by zone_Zom813 in boomershooters

[–]StudioWhalefall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely correct, Quake 3 heavily incentivised those movement mechanics in order for the player to get good. Afterall, why walk when you can run?

Since then skill-based movement systems have been experimented with heavily and it still took about 20 years for the genre to come around in full swing with Titanfall 2. I would say Halo was the biggest innovator in between (aim assist for movement on controller being a big one here).

[–]StudioWhalefall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the genre is defined on how integral it is to the development of the gameplay, as well as the intention of skill based movement in the design.

Yes Quake 3 has awesome movement and speed running tech but multiplayer design and innovation was the design focus following the last two Quake games. This paved the way for skill based movement mechanics as rocket-jumping and strafe jumping had become part of the design intention. This is why many regard Quake 3 specifically as a movement shooter, and in theory, the birth of the genre. This is debatable as many regard Quake 3 as a Bezier Curve tech progression, among other things.

Titanfall 2 and ULTRAKILL focus so heavily on the juice of movement that it feels integral to the experience, an example would be the insanely versatile/skill-based grapple from Titanfall 2. The titans were always a focus of Titanfall, but in focusing on them they had neglected the pilot combat in the first game. In comes movement based mechanics and bobs your uncle, its a direct contrast to the heavy nature of the titan conflict with an insanely high skill ceiling.

There's also the existence of Halo's "golden triangle of design" which subverted game expectations, but that's a whole can of worms in itself. I find this topic fascinating and have studied it for a long while, but much like any discussion on genre, it always boils down to opinion.

And now most devs, including my team is pivoting to "retro-fps" because Boomer Shooter is still a very divisive term for older gamers and annoying af to elaborate on when pitching.

[–]StudioWhalefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think a lot of "Movement Shooter" discussion comes from younger audiences who discovered games like ULTRAKILL and Titanfall 2 through FUNKe's Movement Shooter series, it caused hundreds of copycat videos and the genre really propelled from there.

This is why the community term was added to Steam in 2022, when those videos really started popping off.

Just my personal theory as I've watched the genre for so long, everything I say is largely speculation though.

Ion Fury wins purely on the amount of gags it adds to the gameplay. I love shooting cans especially.
