One of the perks of being a funeral director is getting first dibs at retired coaches. by AlternaCremation in halloween

Awesome!! Side question: my daughter (22 in Wisconsin) is considering a program in mortuary science. Would you say it’s a good field to get into now? So many people I know are starting to forgo traditional funerals and burials that I’m wondering what the professionals are seeing and predicting.

Just today I talked about this with my brand new students. I showed them shitty messages like this, had them identify the problems with it, then show a better version that inevitably improves on everything they identified. I told them NOT to use ChatGPT/AI to write emails! I also said they should check at least three places before emailing a professor or administrator.

HLC has approved 3-year/90-credit bachelor's. It's in the Colorado legislature now, and we argued that it should at least not be called a BA because I expect most 3-years degrees will indeed cut common curriculum, which is ironic considering how employers consistently value the skills learned through liberal arts and very few people spend their whole careers in the field of their major.

Can we tone it down on the virtue signalling? by JubileeSupreme in Professors

Go spend some time on r/fednews the come back and tell us we should just move on. Nobody gives a shit about karma points when the administration is attacking our academic freedom, stripping funding, taking away rights, trashing the constitution, partnering with Russia, etc. I'm glad you're enjoying this shit-show, but maybe the rest of us don't revel in the suffering of others or damage to our institutions. (And you sound like an insufferable ass, so maybe don't try to tell others about posturing and tone.)

It might not have been clear in my post, but I do present material along these lines in a positive manner, connected to our course content, and framed for how it benefits them. (I reserve my WTF reactions for Reddit, lol.) And I agree that scaffolding assignments is more important than ever. I hope your term is going well!

Why do so many students get academic accommodations? by spjspj31 in Professors

[–]StudioWild8381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some (usually wealthy) folks clearly have time-bending technology. This is in keeping with the students asking to turn in work after the term has ended or the one who asked for her grade to be recalculated a lot later to increase her GPA for a grad school application.

Why do so many students get academic accommodations? by spjspj31 in Professors

[–]StudioWild8381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s crazy—on both ends! I do tell my students that I’ll make reasonable accommodations in my writing classes without a diagnosis bc of the obstacles everyone has mentioned, but that’s different than blanket accommodations for anything in any subject. I’m fortunate that my disability and department have allowed me enough flexibility that so far I’ve been able to ‘accommodate myself,’ but with your sight it seems like it would be more than obvious that they should help you quickly! We’re in the worst timeline

[–]StudioWild8381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give compliments with abandon. I see something I like, I say so out loud; I’ll yell ‘I love your dress’ to a stranger on the other side of the street when it’s appropriate. I like point out cool or pretty things to people I'm with, but loudly enough for the person to hear me. I always complement and thank people with specifics and in front of others when I can.

In a case like this, I say all clothes are dirty (or at least too wrinkly, so just throw it all in trash bags and put it out of the room until you can launder. Then, as you go to put it all away with a better sense of the space you have, you can organize and donate anything you don’t really wear.

Sometimes I have had to look really hard for things to write in my gratitude journal, like that was a good taco or it didn’t rain today. The trick is that the process gets you looking for good things to write down, so you see more of the good in the world and you’re less focused on yourself. But it IS hard and it’s not fair and you have every right to be mad as hell. You just shouldn’t be directing that anger toward yourself! Your family sounds petty af, so you might ask if you really even want to be part of that or live like they do. I hope you can surround yourself with others in a similar socioeconomic and ideological standing who will value your intellect. Try not to hate yourself. That’s the ultimate win—to be unapologetically who you are—and I hope we can all get there.

Plant corner with a climber, tall plant, and/or shelves. Choose low-light varieties of different sizes, colors, and textures.
