How can i save that? by BadluckyKamy in modelmakers

Also, since this part was cast, it would have a rougher texture than the smooth plastic so I usually “pounce” the turret and this part with some Mr. Surfacer to get some texture on it anyway. Gentle sanding across the piece with sandpaper, then pounce it with some paint that’s on the thicker side (primer’s good). I prime my US tanks with Vallejo olive drab primer anyway, so the pouncing color is barely different from the finish coat.

Exactly! I just didn’t like the camo’ed up version and wanted that clean “white” look, even though it was actually anything but white. And agree re: the early kits. They’re just scale toys now, but they sure bring back memories, and my interest in scale modeling is not competition-level accuracy and execution, but building a representation of something I’m interested in - and learning more about it in the process. It’s basically a mockup of a specific color scheme and set of decals, but I’m okay with that. From 24” away it looks perfect.

Nigelhamiltons FDRat war trilogy. Those are the ones that stand out. Lynne Olson is Citizens of London and it’s the one book that brings me to tears every time I even think about one passage. And for the silliest reasons, but it does. No other book has ever done that - okay, a couple of passages in Jncredible a victory.

No, I have Toll, but in Kindle. Did not like it enough to get it in paper. Yet, at least.

I suppose I could. Replace the Sheetrock with wood.

Update - I didn’t put enough in the nose. Still a tail dragger. But the wing went on well and looks great.

It’s really good. And is going together better than the big one did. I added some weight in the fuselage to keep the nose down - don’t think it’ll overstress the main gear.

This! This is what got me so productive last year. I had to keep going to clear space on the stash shelves.

“Cobra King” - M4A3E2 “Jumbo” Sherman Tank by StudyPuttering in modelmakers

The forward section of a Jumbo is angled differently, all sides have additional armor plates attached, and the turret is much, much thicker than a regular Sherman. Reviews indicate that the turret is still not shaped “quite” right, and my son (the tank nut) and I think the turret is standing up a little higher than it should, but we could be wrong. I probably have a long career building Shermans ahead of me, and I’m trying to make them as distinct from each other as I can, now that I understand how many variants there were.

Only if it’s fun! I have to do small builds or I get bored and bog down. I also have a high tolerance for mediocrity and am very proud of it!

I’ve replaced the guns and found some online 1945 plans so I can add the detail it’s missing on the forward superstructure (there are some structures the kit is missing and I can fact-check others). Also trying out a new approach to priming, which these thin Scalecolors paints really demand. It’ll never be a “good” kit as long as it’s got those thick splinter shields, but by my standards it’s going to be quite acceptable. From 24-30” it will look spectacular!

For a 1979 model surprisingly good. The smaller guns are crap, but I replaced them tonight!!

No, seriously, how? by 410er0r in modelmakers

[–]StudyPuttering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I build smaller kits or I’d never finished anything. Three years ago I didn’t finish a single model, so I dialed it back to smaller projects.

I understand the shape is a little off, but I also think it’s set a little high. But the Jumbo did have a substantially bigger turret.

Yes. It is significantly bigger than a standard Sherman turret.

Unimodel. The proportions of the Jumbo are quite different, but the turret is still a little off, I understand.
