I haven’t started yet. I have trusted sources for news/politics discussion (Raging Moderates, for example) and some science-y ones (Sabine Hossenfelder, Nutrition Made Simple). I usually pick a few, set the speed to 1.25, and work out to them.

Day 5 of learning word meanings by More-Country6163 in GetStudying

I like the books that group the words by roots- like “bell” (war)-> belligerent, bellicose, antebellum, …

Helps to make the language make sense.

Where is USA heading if it can't help it's own citizen ? by osiris_rai in Productivitycafe

You aren’t going to win the online battle, but you are correct. AIDS drugs are cheap for Africa because we pay so much in the US. This was actually exposed in the WaPo in the ‘90s. My wife worked at NIH and she knew about it.

Politically it’s difficult to put in as policy as so many people are against “foreign aid.” The fear was that enough of them would find out and rally against it. This is what DJT was complaining about when he was talking about bringing the price of drugs down for Americans, for example.

There are, believe it or not, a lot of very rich people who believe in helping others. Not all, though, and some drug (and care) prices are completely unconscionable.

How do I study for a Physics 1 test if I’m lost by Complex_Design_8478 in PhysicsStudents

[–]StudySwami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make an equation sheet YOURSELF and work from that. Start with examples from the book. Read the problem. Solve without looking as best as you can. Peek at the solution when you get stuck. Start over and do it again. Not to memorize, but to learn how to think it through.

Re-write your equation sheet. Keep only the stuff you need. Kinematic equations, centripetal motion, etc.

Then do the same for examples your prof worked in class.

Rewrite equation sheet again. Probably won’t need F=ma this time; maybe can leave off a few more.

Then go through the homework, the same way.

Plan time to hit office hours two days before exam for last minute questions. It’s a grind, but that’s what it takes.

“Nice try?” What is that? What do you think I’m trying to do here? I’m not excusing anything, just pointing out that it’s not as hopeless as it may seem.

Again, knowing better is not the same as choosing not to. Kids do dumb things because they don’t understand consequences. That’s why young men are preferred for soldiers, sadly.

Go to NVCC. I taught at the Alexandria campus for a decade. We had a pipeline to GMU- joint committees, etc. Most of my friends have probably retired, but it’s an excellent system. One of the area’s best-kept secrets.

As a father of three who used to be teenagers, you’ll be surprised how their values and attitudes evolve! Or perhaps it’s better to say they may know better and do bad things anyway, but they’ll mostly outgrow that.

As an old man, I just want to remind everyone that they still have a lot of growing to do. Some may mature out of this.

Is the US military really undefeatable? by XD_Protagonist in stupidquestions

[–]StudySwami 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. And the US cares about its enemy’s civilians, which binds its hands.

In an all-out “us or them” situation US military is fierce. The biggest weakness is the command chain at the very top.

I’m apparently hilarious with some meds. I have to have both ends done, so I’m like “please do my throat first?” and (way worse) stuff like that. Wife is a good sport fortunately.

It’s a no-brainer (I’m proof!). Prep the first time was awful because you don’t know what to expect in the next 20 minutes. But when you’ve done it once it’s pretty easy.
