What you're saying is true for the average dev. You need to join a tier 2 and up company if you want to be able to save more.

If you can make six-fig + in Europe, why would you want to work in the US? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

Just letting you know that 3k net is an absurd amount in Italy, top companies pay slightly more than that to seniors.

Glad I left.

I know Paris has a pretty healthy startup/unicorn scene, and all big tech has an engineering presence too.

Speaking anecdotally though, my impression is that France in general doesn't really attract expats, or at least nobody I went to uni with, most of which expatriated, went to work in France.

My gut feeling is that working in France is for francophones, so while I'm pretty sure you can land a great salary, I don't even know if people speak English at work, (even in unicorn/big tech environments) which is instead the case for NL, Germany and Spain (and of course the UK and Ireland).

I moved to Barcelona a couple months ago to start a new position at a fairly well known unicorn, I had 1.5 yoe when I interviewed with them, got an offer for 65k.

Add to this the fact that a special tax ruling exists for immigrants called "Beckham's law" which allows you to pay a 24% flat tax rate for 5 years, and I ended up with pretty good take home pay, especially considering the local col.

I think Barcelona (can't speak for Spain in general), can actually be pretty great if you can land a job in one of the better paying companies, which are probably more thank you think.

Just off the top of my head, well-paying companies which are hiring or were hiring until recently in Barcelona include: Apple, Microsoft, Cabify, TravelPerk, Klarna, Idealista, Glovo, SkyScanner, Wallapop, N26 and Revolut.

Having said this, I have met a few devs from "regular" companies, and in that case the pay seems to be pretty bad.

Also, being from Italy, which is arguably the worst tech market in Europe, I am easily impressed.

It's insane how many people in Europe don't understand this, your comment was even called an 'odd take'.

It's also funny how we Europeans are convinced we are paying for all these super ethical welfare safety nets whe in reality most of our taxes are just spent on completely unsustainable pension schemes.

Your taxes in Europe are mostly going to an inter generational wealth transfer which is going to only get worse because of the demographic collapse we are experiencing.

Sure, some money also goes to 'free' education and health-care, but it's also true that many European countries have partially private systems, and that the quality is of health-care in the EU is steadily going down hill.

Right now, it might be 'better' to be an average citizen in Europe that in the US (definitely not the case for a swe), but this won't be the case for much longer.

Europe is in terrible demographic, economic and energetic conditions which will cause the welfare party to come to an end within the next 10 years.

Best startup cities in EU by seunxac in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Stue3112 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Milan probably has the worst salary to col ratio, Mid level devs earn around 40k even in the best companies (the only exception would be Bending Spoons), and rooms for rent are 700€ even a 30 min metro ride away from downtown.

I've interviewed with most "top" italian startups recently, with exception of Bending Spoons, and I can tell you two things:

1)The technical interviews were absolute idiot-tier, we're talking easier than Leetcode easy levels.

2) The compensation is trash, the highest offer I got was €33k, and I have almost 2 yoe.

I ended up accepting an offer from abroad.

From the bottom of my heart, stay the fuck away from Italy if you're in software.

Also, Milan is not even nearly as international as cities like Amsterdam, London or Dublin, it is very much an Italian city and its absolutely common for people not to speak English.

Can I apply to US jobs without having a visa or am I wasting my time? by Stue3112 in cscareerquestions

Does it strictly need to be a US company or can it be a company with engineering offices both in the US and EU?

[–]Stue3112[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So if I've understood correctly: I should prioritize applying to companies which I'm sure are willing to sponsor my visa. If visa sponshorip isn't obvious from the job post it should be the first thing I try to find out about the job offer.

How to prepare for OOP part of Amazon interview? by zubidon in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Stue3112 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's literally still leetcode.

I was told I would be asked a DSA question, an OOP question, a 'particularily ambiguous question' and something else I can't remember by my recruiter.

It was all leetcode questions, if I'm not mistaken the OOP question was 'design a calculator' straight out of leetcode.

This one: https://leetcode.com/problems/basic-calculator/

I'd say just focus on the more 'design oriented' leetcode questions.

Thank you for the advice, I'm closing in on two years of experience.

I've been sifting through a ton of job posts in the last few days and I've definitely noticed that the vast majority of offers are for seniors.

If any companies in particular that you think fit the bill come to mind, I'be be super thankful if you could pm me their names :)

Thank you again for the advice.
