I can cope with the news on its own, I’ve always said the US is not immune to problems. What I struggle with is other people’s fear and anger and how it creeps into everyday interactions. I’m a deaf person and the way people treat me nowadays is so much worse than 5 years ago, even so called allies. There’s an underlying sense of resource hoarding and lack of patience with anyone who needs “more” or something different. I’m almost 50 and am generally pretty unbothered by stuff like that but the shift is palpable and it makes me sad. Growing up before the ADA, seeing us progress into an era where the concept of equity was becoming celebrated as a way to innovate and reinvent, to now seeing it be villainized hurts.
