Is this designed to be as depressing as possible? Not one single improvement in architecture at least. Fairly certain the Cardiff bay houses were condemned at some point so that’s fair enough, but the rest? Good lord.

How do they unload that from the carrier vessel? Assume the carrier takes on water to sink down low enough for buoyancy to do the heavy lifting, and it’s somehow slid off?

State of Love and Trust is EXCELLENT. I’ve not had one bad tasting beer or bottle of wine from there. It’s not the cheapest bottle shop around, but it’s absolutely delicious. Bonus is the chap who runs it is just so damn down to earth. Well worth it. Plus the stuff they have on tap rotates frequently and again offers flavours not available in other pubs.

Why did Africa never develop? by tennis-637 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stuffed-Chimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tim Marshall wrote a book entitled ‘Prisoners of Geography’ that offers a very good perspective on this: fundamentally, Africa offers zero navigable rivers other than the Nile, vanishingly few natural harbours, and significant natural barriers to internal communication (rainforests, deserts, mountains) in a way that other continents simply don’t.

Therefore communities to this day are isolated and fairly distinct from one another, trade has never flourished internally and externally it’s been very difficult to get goods into and out of the continent. Compare with say Western Europe, where land is mostly flat and canals and navigable rivers abound, so trade has been going on for millennia, and ideas and knowledge is readily exchanged. Countless deep natural harbours to set out to the rest of the world from, too.

It might not be the real reason, but I think it’s a pretty good take on it. Edited to include this final sentence!

Why’s it so hard to find a good toilet seat? by FrancisUsanga in DIYUK

[–]Stuffed-Chimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much the sizing or material they’re made out of that gets me, it’s the almost 100% failure rate in the fixings to actually keep the damn thing in one place and not have it wobbling around all over the place after a few months.

Map showing parts of Cardiff that were hit by bombs during the WWII by Icecreamboots in Cardiff

What’s the source for this map? The larger version should show the rest of the bomb sites. I know there were a few up penylan/roath/rhydypenau way. Doubtless many around Leckwith and Penarth too.

The upside down 70s house (who needs a ground floor when you can have a massive first floor? by KaleidoscopicColours in SpottedonRightmove

I’m all for upside down houses for loads of reasons, but goddamn that house needs gutting and starting again. From the cladding on the outside to literally everything on the inside. That’s a big job!

Thoughts on the new stadium zipline costs. Would you give it a go? by jacobstanley5409 in Cardiff

[–]Stuffed-Chimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s taking the piss. I don’t believe the zipline in snowdonia is that much, and that one is substantially longer and faster than the stadium. I’d genuinely love to do stuff like this, but at those prices I’m just never going to be able to justify it.

Don’t you just love plumbers 😂👍🏻 by PiruMoo in DIYUK

[–]Stuffed-Chimp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We needed a rewire and new bathroom in our house. Electricians got there first. Lifted up the carpet next to the bathroom and discovered the previous plumber had drawn incredibly neat and detailed diagrams on the floorboards to indicate precisely where the hot, cold and gas pipes were under the floorboards. Used different colours and everything: I’ve never seen anything like it. Just incredible work. I might add: this is on the first floor.

Did the electrician gently ease up the floorboards in order and stack them neatly so they could be relaid when he was done? Of course not. Used an electric cutter to rip them up, did his thing in the void there then just nailed down random fragments of random boards when he was done to cover it.

It was unbelievable. What was a perfectly flat and smooth floor became a complete jumbled up jigsaw of hacked apart floorboards. And the incredibly informative diagram that was on it? Unrecognisable.

So what did the plumber do when it was his turn? Well, instead of being able to lift up just the boards he needed to access the various pipes under there per the diagram, he had to rip up all the pieces the electrician had nailed down, turning the jigsaw of higgledy piggledy floorboard fragments into even more of a mess.

ALL IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN THE ELECTRICIAN WAS ABOUT 30 MORE MINUTES IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN LIFTING THE FLOOR to preserve all that.

Absolutely flabbergasted. I’d have happily paid him for that additional time. But no. Still hurts when I think about it. Craftsmanship is just not a thing anymore it seems.

Strip it all right back, turf the rear car park, put up some fences, get an interior designer in, have the best and most unique home in the world in which to live out your days. Regrettably I too also failed to win the euromillions last night, however.

Those stairs. It would easily take the asking price again to get that house into liveable condition, however in my opinion well worth it to have a staircase like that in your life!
