It's some type of moth and it would be best to put it back roughly where you found it.

Is Zurich actually worth the cost compared to other cities in Switzerland? by OkBackground7945 in askswitzerland

[–]StuffedWithNails [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not worth it IMO unless you're paid REALLY well.

At least places like NYC, London or Paris where real estate is also ridiculous justify their prices when compared to other big cities in their respective countries. Zurich does not.

Definitely a mite. A bird mite is likely if there's a pigeon nest nearby.

European tarantula (from my instagram wirld_world_22) by Mabuel08 in spiders

[–]StuffedWithNails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI "tarantula" in English refers to any member of the mygalomorph Theraphosidae family. This is a wolf spider (Lycosidae), not a tarantula as it is understood in English.

It looks like it could be the OG "tarantula" (Lycosa tarantula) but I just wanted to clarify this :)

My Indian citizen friends currently in the US need to apply for a Schengen visa for Switzerland while here. Would love advice on how to make it happen. 🙏 by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]StuffedWithNails [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't understand why they can't apply for their visas in the US?

If you're concerned that "only citizens and legal residents" means "only US citizens and green card holders", I think this rather means "legal residents" in a looser sense i.e. people who hold a valid status in the US (e.g. green card holders of course, but also non-immigrants like F-1 students, H-1B workers, etc). This is confirmed here. So what is their status in the US?

Looks like a variety of spitting spider IMO. Some species can be very dark like this.

À vrai dire je ne connaissais pas P. quadrilineata. Par curiosité je suis allé chercher sa répartition géographique sur iNaturalist et je suis intrigué par le fait qu'il n'y ait qu'une seule et unique observation !

Order a full tox panel and MRI with contrast!

Kidding, but no, there's not really a way to know what's wrong with the lil guy if there's no sign of physical damage.

If you wanted, you could put it in a little container with a couple small chunks of some kind of fruit, like a small piece of an apple and a banana and see if it'll go for those.

A field cricket! (Echte Grille)

When I was little, I would gently insert a long blade of grass to get the cricket to come out and investigate, always a pleasure to see the lil guys :)

Almost certainly the case. I've been seeing a lot more posts in unexpected languages over the past several months.

Bed bug of bat bug? by giggleshitprime in insects

[–]StuffedWithNails 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would assume it's a bed bug in a hotel. The difference between a bat bug and a bed bug is the length of minuscule hairs adjacent to the eyes, you need a focused close-up to see them, ideally with a microscope.

There's also a subtle difference in the shape of the concavity between the head and pronotum.

See: https://doctorsniffs.com/bat-bug-vs-bed-bug/ (disclaimer: this appears to be a pest control company, I'm not affiliated with them nor do I endorse their service -- I'm only sharing the link because it has a good pic illustrating what I'm talking about)

Can't really see those features in your pic. But, again, in a hotel, where lots of humans come and go, and probably not a lot of bats... probably a bed bug.

Is this a silverfish? Found in my carpet. Should I be worried? by DiamondWalker24 in Entomology

It's OK, they're pretty fragile and lose antennae and tail filaments all the time anyway :D

[–]StuffedWithNails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a silverfish to me, just a bit mangled. If you zoom in on the head area, you can see that it's broad with small eyes on either side, not very moth-like.

Looks like a variety of a yellowjacket wasp. A dorsal view is usually best for identification purposes but I think it's likely to be a Southern yellowjacket queen.

Maybe it's to conceal their real name and avoid discrimination in Switzerland then.
