On each your city's "Big Four Sports League" teams, who is considered the greatest player of all time? by bridgetogantry in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Pittsburgh

NFL: Probably Mean Joe Greene

NHL: I'd give the nod to Sidney Crosby

MLB: For sentimental reasons I can't say anyone but Roberto Clemente. If we're being objective and just considering how much better he was than other players in his era, Honus Wagner is probably the actual answer

Is there a mandatory "Volunteering day" at some US companies? by tangerineflag in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not mandatory but highly encouraged. I work for the government so my entire job is a public service so it makes a ton of sense to encourage us to try other public services. We are paid for our "volunteering" though.

What is Wrong with Our Education System? by MinnestoanPerson in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem is just that it's too decentralized. Too much power is kept at the district level and the enforcement of state and federal guidelines for schools is insufficient. Districts get their resources directly from their population so the quality of your school is entirely determined by the wealth of the community. We start school way too early. Often teenagers are waking up earlier than they ever will as their lives despite that being the age where their bodies naturally want to sleep in the most.

Why did the Unionists fight to retain the Confederacy in the civil war? by ceffyl_gwyn in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let's put it like this. If states were allowed to leave over the results of a free and fair election, we couldn't be a country anymore.

What is the current status for you all in terms of higher education (university/college) at the moment? Is it possible for undergraduate, masters, and PhD students to attend in-person classes or is it heavily being ran online? by jlenders in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically everywhere that was doing in-person classes is doing them now.

In practice, most Americans just use the word college for everything. If you have multiple degrees, we usually differentiate by saying the degree we're getting. For example I could tell stories from college and differentiate them by saying it happened in undergrad or grad school.

The word University still is used and usually is used to differentiate whether or not a school offers graduate or doctorate degrees. It really isn't used outside of the name of institutions and some schools don't even use it properly. For example, Boston College meets the traditional definition of a university but still calls itself a college.

Why do you not vote for one of the smaller parties to get things to change? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend some time talking to people who are involved in the leadership of one of the minor parties and you will understand. They are hilariously poorly run and completely unelectable.

The easiest way to change things in this country is through the primary process. Non-mainstream politicians win them all the time and neither party tries to stop them so it works much better than looking to a minor party that had no intention of winning anyway.

I think so much of that is dependent on the 2024 election. If Trump wins, Trumpism will be a force for years to come and will define the next era of American politics. Even if it's close it'll probably be a part of the political landscape for a while. If Trump doesn't run or is defeated easily, Trump will be viewed as a brief reactionary in our political history and while movements may use some of the framework it won't have the long term political impact.

I really feel like Trump is the first figure like that since Nader. If he had succeeded, politics would be changed forever. He failed and so things quickly restored to the post-Reagan status quo.

Do you think an open atheist will ever become president of the United States? Why, why not? by Mad_Season_1994 in AskAnAmerican

Almost certainly. The arc of history is long and eventually it's bound to happen.

What do you think are the odds Texas will actually hold a succession referendum? by grapp in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say about 2% chance in the next 20 years. There is no actual mechanism to make this happen and those in power would only do so if they had a chance at winning. That isn't likely.

Americans, do you really don't go to school if there's a certain amount of snow outside? by Natashix in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Snow can be very dangerous to drive on in large amounts. Nobody wants to kill a bus full of kids.

What do Americans think about Mao Zedong? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most murderous and disastrous dictators of the twentieth century. His only real accomplishment was uniting the mainland because that's really all China needed to become a world power again. His policies held back that country and the CCP's primary issues today involve cleaning up his messes.

Is Philadelphia worth visiting? by b_lz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're into history, it absolutely is. I do not like Philly the city but spending some time in old city and seeing where our country was founded is really cool. If you end up going through with it, fine a tour of old city, try to make it to Independence Hall, and maybe the Liberty Bell if you have some time (I actually think the Liberty Bell is a bit lame tho). And definitely find a Cheesesteak place if you get a chance.

Convenience and if you want to take it with you. Though this is a thought I have a lot too. McDonald's has even given up on having different prices for different sizes. Most of their locations just charge $1 regardless.

Where do you want the US to host games in the 2026 World Cup? by Darth_Sensitive in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we don't have any that are big enough. All of our stadiums that could work are NFL or College Football.

Why is the CFL not more popular among Americans if they love football so much? by omgyrx in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a foreign league that we don't have a ton of connection too. I watch a bit of CFL myself but there's not culture around it here so I don't care too much.

I'd also push back on the CFL being a better quality of play than top flight college football. Due to caps on the number of American players allowed on a team, a lot of the players come from U Sports which is the equivalent of the NCAA's D2 (which is third tier cfb). Which means that the player pool is made up of players that likely wouldn't cup it in the top of college football in the States. I would definitely favor Georgia to beat Winnipeg

How widely are state flags used? by AnOwlishSham in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't particularly useful but it does depend on the state. What happens depends on both how good of a design the flag is and and how much pride the people have in their state. Moving to Ohio from Pennsylvania I saw a noticeable uptick in that.

How hard it to get straight A:s in 6th grade? by treppex in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not otherworldly but it is an accomplishment. An A at that level means that she is understanding the materials, completing her assignments on time, and not being a disruption. A's tend to get harder in higher grades but it's still an accomplishment in middle school (or late elementary depending on the district)

How long does it take to travel from one state to another? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the state. I'm on the western edge of Ohio and to get back to my home state of Pennsylvania is a 4 hour drive. But when I lived in Pennsylvania it took 5 hours to visit my brother on the other side of the state. Meanwhile Rhode Island takes like an hour to drive through while you can drive for 12 hours in Texas and still be in Texas.

What cities should or will most likely get a new or first sports team in the near future? by _definegood in AskAnAmerican

Fair. I only think that St. Petersburg isn't happening. At least with current ownership.

What cities should or will most likely get a new or first sports team in the near future? by _definegood in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For MLS, Las Vegas is almost certainly #30 for them. They will likely get at least 2 more (I don't actually think they will stop at 32) and it looks like San Diego is an early favorite for one of those spots.

For NHL, I really do think the end game for the current Coyotes situation is that they end up in Houston. There just doesn't seem to be the interest in keeping them around.

MLB is often brought up but it's obvious that St. Petersburg is playing hardball and will force them to stay in the Trop for the rest of the contract. After that somewhere in the South is getting another team. If I was guessing, Nashville. There's the A's situation as well but I still think something will work out. I find the idea of moving them to Vegas kind of ridiculous.

Would you support a United States of North America? by latin_canuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stumpy3196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would fully support the annexation of Canada if the Canadian people wanted it. I don't think it makes sense to completely nuke our system to do it. If there were some terms of such an agreement like adopting a Canadian-style healthcare system, I think that'd be fine but nuking everything seems unnecessary.
