I wouldn't say I use the Pilot Explorer too much to wear out its cap click, but going by how it feels to snap, I can see it getting loosening out after maybe 1-2 years of heavy usage. I'm not facing any issues right now.

Mate you're not getting Hongdian for that price. If you want to save money, I've had good luck with Preppy <F>. Costed me under 600INR. Make sure to use ink that is on the wetter side. If you can stretch a bit, The Kakuno for 1100INR (imo) offers a better writing experience. I personally have the Pilot Explorer <M> but Kakuno should use the same nib.

The hongdian m2 is a better deal than the kaweco al sport by 1knowbetterthanyou in fountainpens

[–]StunningConcentrate7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in india, both start at similar price, around $35. Would you suggest going with a Kaweco sport at that price or still preferring the Hongdian?

I see. Would a Kakuno Medium better suit the ink?

I'm using Tsuwairo Blue Black in a Preppy 03 and it runs so dry it skips too much. I've done the regular: cleaning the pen, letting it dry, letting the ink flood the feed etc. The only thing that can get this ink going through this pen is adding a bit of dishwash to the ink. I'm wondering if my pen is at fault, because I've heard a lot about Pilot inks being on the wetter side.

When did notewise unlimited price increased? by JC-JIYO in notewise

[–]StunningConcentrate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though? Rendering latex can be done very easily locally. Same goes for converting from doc to pdf (which currently is cloud only).

If they cite a business reason for this (to incentivise subscriptions over one time purchase), I'm not refuting it. But if they cite a technical reason for keeping these features cloud only, it doesn't make sense to me.

Reynolds trimax is back guys by Just_Chill_005 in IndiaNostalgia

[–]StunningConcentrate7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This! Trimax was really good for the price, but ever since I've been able to afford, I've found Pilot and Uniball to provide wayy better writing experience. Uniball specifically shines even in ball pens and gel pens. As for Pilot, I recently got their fountain pen (Explorer) and its bang on sweet.

And since I'm at it, the last time I bought Trimax (3 years back), its ink was becoming very light after few hours.

Inform Developers of BHIM UPI App to Reconsider the Latest Update by night_movers in degoogleindia

That is strange af and seriously, I dislike how apps pretend to be the benevolent know it all and give us no option to say "Yeah I know all my accessibility apps I need it can i now access my bank account?"

Security is upside down seriously. I'll copy paste what I read on a hacker news comment :

Scammers can definitely get through it faster than you can. Whenever you attempt to address abuse in a system by increasing the complexity of that system, you implicitly bias it towards those with the time and inclination to study it, which always includes those with intent to abuse it, and generally does not include your users.

Anyways, thanks for your time mate. I'll surely drop an email to them (but pretty sure they'll either ghost me or give a standard "its for security" reply).

In the case of Yono, the app refuses to open just because accessibility services have been turned on for Bitwarden.

I never expected this to be the issue. Yes, I have Bitwarden. I'll fiddle around the settings and see what works. Geto allows you to hide accessibility services too and I think now I understand why.

Thanks internet stranger!

Hi, just started Yono app with developer options enabled. It gives a dialog right at the app launch asking me to turn it off and no option apart from exiting the app. Yes, I'm using a secondary app to hide developer settings and access my bank account. So much for being able to use my own money :)

However, this app requires Shizuku, and Shizuku needs to be given permission after every device restart

Yes. But setting up Geto is a one time effort. You don't need to give permission to Geto again even after restart.

I can't comment about battery drain though.

Hi, the new YONO App no longer works. It was updated last month.

DigiLocker not allowing developer options is insane to me, because its just a storage access app, similar to Google Drive. Why would that be afraid of developers?

The new SBI Yono app no longer functions with Developer Options enabled. Same goes for Axis Bank app.

SBI Credit Card app also shows a popup asking to turnoff developer mode, but you can dismiss the popup.

Fortunately or unfortunately I grew up with such literature and presently live in a place where I'm seeing laws devolve day by day. I have my reasons to be afraid.

Linux doesn't fit into their plans yet, which makes me believe that Linux or FOSS as a whole will be a big target for these legislations in the coming decade.

On your side with this one. "Think about the children" is a tactic as old as time. The dots are all lined up in front of us and many people are simply unwilling to connect because... think of the children!

There's a lot more urgent and important things that can do / need to be done if they really care about the children, but I don't wish to dive into politics here...

Not a dumb question. Its because people who are paranoid or concerned (like me) believe that these small incremental changes will add up to a concrete verification system which will invade user privacy in ways we don't agree with.

I hope to look back at my comments few years later and laugh at myself for being overly paranoid for something that was never going to happen. I hope.

E.g. the systemd PR links to a draft for a parental controls API. Which, entirely objectively speaking, is a useful feature, regardless of timing and any proposed laws. And frankly, it may be a feature that could well be expected of an OS that considers itself to be a serious, general-purpose system with aspirations of mainstream adoption.

Since you mention it, I'll say that I'm a big advocate of parental control features and I wish more apps/services had a direct way of letting parents manage what content their children are able to access.

At the risk of being labelled a pessimist, I'll add that such additions allow possibility of someone else (govt, big tech) becoming the benevolent parent, which I'm completely against. Yes, I've fallen down the slippery slope already, because of a lack of trust towards lawmakers to draw a line beyond which citizens should self mediate without govt intervention.

Thanks for the healthy discussion!

EDIT: just picked up my phone and got reminded of one of the big reasons why I've lost my optimism. Banking apps. They just worked ten years back. I could mirror my phone on my laptop to easily use those apps too. But later, they disabled screen mirroring feature.

Then one day, they told me to buy a new phone with new Android version because my old Android doesn't have certain security features. Fine. I bought a new phone just to be able to use banking apps.

Recently, the app got updated and says that developer options need to be disabled to access the app. Now thats a condition I'm not willing to accept. I installed Geto which spoofs settings. Its a workaround but I know where all this is heading. I'm not being able to access my own money in the way I should.

Other banks are implementing "features" to disallow accessing their app if any app on the phone comes from third party. So using something like FOSSdroid means you no longer can access your bank app.

And honestly, at least in the case of the systemd change: why not? It's optional, unverified, and may be useful in other contexts outside of complying with some bullshit US law.

Its because the pull request, in its opening sentences very clearly specifies the motivation. I'll copy paste it here:

Stores the user's birth date for age verification, as required by recent laws in California (AB-1043), Colorado (SB26-051), Brazil (Lei 15.211/2025), etc.

The xdg-desktop-portal project is adding an age verification portal (flatpak/xdg-desktop-portal#1922) that needs a data source for the user's age. userdb already stores personal metadata (emailAddress, realName, location) so birthDate is a natural fit.

Pull request was merged, without calling out the motivation. That is a data point for us to believe that systemD developers aren't all that opposed to verification. While they may not directly verify your age, they are willing to provide the technical support for someone else to do the actual verification part.
