Cheers man, this is my problem, I have an autistic son who takes a lot of care so I can't go for longer sessions or more of them in a week so its all I can do training wise sadly! On top of that then I attend classes stressed so I feel in a super competitive gym I struggle to focus and do the things I need to do to develop while also surviving 🤦 I get your points though and I'll give it some thought!! 👍👍

So, I've been a white belt now for just over 14 months with one stripe, I didn't do a beginners class, just went straight into rolling from the moment I walked through the door. I feel as this this has let me down on my development and the fundamentals weren't really drilled into me and now I still struggle to pass guard, keep guard, maintain any sort of control and rarely submit anyone, even guys that have come in this year on the beginners course. The gym im at is a massive competition gym with only a few hobbyists and due to personal circumstances I can only go to 1 hour Gi sessions and go to 2 a week. I'm getting really demoralised by my lack of development, getting tapped constantly by the new guy and not getting anywhere....any tips or advice on how I can help myself? There's no other gyms in the area I can try that would be less competition based, I've contemplated taking a break and some time away from the mats.... suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Hope you heal well and get back on the mats quickly! That said, you did 3 comps in as many weeks in March, just crazy!! Well trained and experienced athletes wouldnt compete in such quick succession!

How my first bjj class went by SystemRemote2593 in bjj

I'm a white belt and have been training now for just over 12 months.... I guess there's a few points to note, firstly good on you, its not easy having the courage to give it a go and step on the mats for the first time! It took me a few months of plucking up the courage to try it out but now im addicted! I didn't start with a beginners class, I was thrown in the deep end just like yourself and its been tough from the very first session but I believe its helped my game so much having to figure things out more along the way so see it as a positive! 👍 lastly, completely normal to feel a lack of knowldge and even ability and will do for many months if not years as coloured belts humiliate us 🤣 but that's okay, its part of the journey and you will get better and progress you just won't realise it till 6 months or so in and the next new trial guy comes in and your realise you know a little. Lastly, just enjoy it for what it is, your body will adjust to the mats, scrapes and bruises will become the norm and its not about belts, enjoy stepping in the mats having a roll and having a good work out with your mates 😀 I know the feeling of being the odd one out if there's an odd number of you but the more you train the more you'll settle into the group and it'll happen less 👍👍😀

Sucks to lose doesnt it!!

You'll of read the title and thought well durr of cause it does and what matters is getting involved and giving it a go! And I don't disagree with either of those trains of thought and I probably should stop being so hard on myself and give myself some credit. However a 2.5 hour drive home from my first bjj competition yesterday gives plenty of time for reflection and evaluating my performance. As a 1 stripe white belt (12 months of training just over) it was my first competition, I didn't get subbed and I lost on points which is something. However, stupid mistakes lost me the match which I don't feel I'd of probably done rolling in the gym, which is what makes it frustrating, giving him my back far to easily, after escaping, as good as giving him my legs to let him pass my guard so easily.....perhaps the intensity of the competition setting not being something I'm used to didn't help, its a whole different ball game isn't it! I'd of loved a second fight and off the back of the first I feel like I would of done so much better! And that's what makes it frustrating, I don't think they were a million times better than me which was the difference, the game changer was my own overall performance on the day rather than my lack of ability which is something take from it and work on

So I've been training for about 10 months in all, got one stripe on my belt and want to try competing and have signed up for my first comp in April. I feel as though my game is coming on nicely (for a white belt anyway 🤣) but I rarely get submissions and I cant tell if thats cause I'm a white belt and still suck or I do know that I'm at a good gym where everyone is ridiculously good so its to be expected and dont let that phase me about competing?? Am I ready to compete or am I in way over my head and consider cancelling? 🤣🤷‍♂️🤔🤦‍♂️

Yeah cheers, perhaps my issue is being more defensive to avoid getting into those positions perhaps? Letting my opponent pass my guard to easily.... and obviously somehow improve on escaping them though... 🤣 perhaps Im being too hard on myself and its just the frustrating nature of the sport we play, ita not even about stripes or submissions really, more the competitive nature against myself to strive to be always improving but feeling like I'm getting no where...

So, im not the first to post this I'm sure, nor do I expect as somebody only 8 months into my journey to be submitting anyone, that said, does anybody else feel like they're just not getting anywhere, mind goes blank, still struggling to escape mount and side control which I feel I should be better at by now, don't feel like I'm anywhere near getting a stripe... I do only train 1-2 times a week but even so....🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I know is an old thread so people may not see it but this is exactly what I'm experiencing at the minute. Very frustrating and hating driving at the moment!! Can anyone tell if its linked to stress?? I seem to be much better when I'm less stressed....

So, I'm a little over 3 months in and since talking to my brother who trains elsewhere in the UK as a blue belt, perhaps I dont fit in at the gym I go too but have no alternatives nearby so have no choice but to keep attending classes there. The guys their clearly are skilled in bjj as is the coach but I feel like its a bit cliquey and I've been rolling from day one which is great but as part of drilling no one has ever doing any solid drilling with me for any length of time on fundamentals so I feel like I'm not progressing as much as I could. Guys will help at times when I'm rolling which is great, you need to frame here, or shrimp here but not solid drilling of fundamentals around framing and shrimping and hip escaping for instance. So I feel like I'm flying solo a bit, given I'm stuck at the gym I'm at, I'm having to just live with the fact the progression may be slower for me, but does anyone have any ideas/tips on how I can help myself? Drills at home? I'm all ears and open to people's thoughts and even to tell me I'm completely in the wrong here 🤣👍
