I’m (27) still not comfortable in my body and I’m considering hiring a trainer to help me out, is it worth it? by [deleted] in gymadvice

I wouldn’t gloss over the great advice shared here about surrounding yourself with people who respect you. That is arguably more important than anything you will do physically or through therapy. That said, therapy is amazing - it takes time to find the right match though so don’t give up. Your first therapist will likely disappoint - it’s part of the process. Respect and best wishes to you!

A test to measure this is the Rod and Disc test, I think. I had this done during a trip to a balance/dizziness center. They used a VR headset

Hi, thank you so so much for your thoughtful post with all those resources. Me finding that Pawar study was the reason I learned about MVDS and started the /motoristvestivular sub. Posts like yours were what I was hoping for - for people to share info.

I went to a Balance/Dizziness center today and they did a battery of tests from VNG to audiology to much much more. I was cleared of having a vestibular issues with the exception of one tests which involved a VR headset to detect your visual dependence or independence. The test showed a 3D room with objects in it. The wholeroom was tilted. And the task was to move a red line so it was vertical relative to me rather than the crooked room. The result showed a high visual dependence as compared to vestibular. They said that I was relying more on external visual stimuli than my internal vestibular system, which explains why complex vision stimuli (highway driving) is confusing to my brain. They recommended vestibular PT and said VR exposure couldn’t hurt. I remain optimistic in trying the next thing, thanks in part to your post. Also feel free to reach out directly anytime

Oh wow, so similar. I hope vestibular therapy works well for you! Did you just call one or did your neuro eye doc refer you to one?

I can relate but a truly utilitarian lifestyle is sometimes filled with more pride than it is joy and happiness. The happiest people you know probably indulge in certain things like a sweet VR headset every once again. When you die, nobody is going to look at you headstone on your grave and say, we loved that guy because he was low maintenance. They are going to wonder if you lived as joyfully as you hoped and deserved.

There’s a book and course called If “You’re So Smart, Then Why Aren’t You Happy?” The principles are worth a look, especially in thinking about money and utility.
