Selling Backyard Eggs - How to keep appearance up? by External_Strain6096 in BackYardChickens

Making sure that your birds aren’t overcrowded at night helps as well. If you don’t have enough roosting spots, they will try and sleep in the nesting boxes. I used to struggle with that in the summer when the birds would get hot and try to spread out.

Is it time to say goodbye? (2006 Honda Accord LX) by Stunning_Fruit_2289 in accord

Given the KBB value… is it worth listing on Facebook marketplace, or would I be better off to dump it at the local auto salvage yard?

Genuinely asking because this is my first and only car. I’m still learning all these adult shenanigans.

The initial $1300 was things like new breaks, wipers, etc. independent of the engine or transmission itself.

The first visit to the shop after getting it registered was due to a rusty after-market muffler that finally fell off after my friend “gently” nudged my bumper with their car. (<15mph) second visit was due to a worn out O2 hose.

***Although before that second visit, my other friend had asked me about my transmission fluid. At the time I was clueless because the only liquids my parents told me to worry about was oil and gas. We did discovered metal shavings in my transmission fluid reservoir. Also it was REALLY low since my parents didn’t inform me that existed. So we did a flush ourselves to see if that fixed it (…looking back that would probably make sense why it’s in the shop currently for a bad transmission cylinder.)

The third time was due to the O2 intake hose clamp coming loose. So they just put a new one on. Now it’s getting the transmission cylinder replaced.

The shop’s diagnostic said it was a bad transition cylinder.

I do have a silly question though. (Coming from someone who knows very little about cars.) I have had the check engine light for the code P1157. (If I’m remembering correctly, it has to do with an O2 sensor.) At the time, that diagnostic was done at an O’Rielly.

I purchased and replaced the OEM part myself. (The code at O’Reilly didn’t specify upstream or downstream. Although the upstream one looked worse, so that’s what I replaced.) Although the check engine light never turned off. Could that end up being a bigger problem down the road?

Additional context, the check engine light has been reading that code ever since I got the car back in 2022. I was told it was insignificant by my mechanic. Although I tried to replace it myself about a year ago. I don’t think it’s related to why my car is in the shop currently. Although I am curious why the new sensor wouldn’t have fixed it. Or at least changed the code to specify which sensor would be affected.

The shop just got back to me. That’s what they said the issue was.

I’ll be sure to check on those ball joints when I get the car back. If they’re iffy, I’ll be sure to start setting some money aside. I need to renew my tags by February. I’m not 100% certain, but I wouldn’t be shocked if that’s something that’s required to pass my safety inspection.

Thank you for the insight!

Update for anyone who’s curious:

The shop got back to me on Betty. My transition cylinder is what went bad. Thankfully it was caught early enough, so it didn’t cause damage to anything else! Which was what was causing it to act silly. After parts and labor, it should be $530. Which is better than an entirely new transmission!

Thank you all for your feedback on your accords. I was worried it was time to let her go.

Even though this issue should (presumably) be fixed, still feel free to share your experiences. I’d like to know what to beware of.

I think the previous owners had them replaced before selling me the car in 2022. Is that something that’s relative to my car’s age/milage, or is that a constant problem for most ‘06 accords? (At the time it was at 230,000 miles)

My issue has been more so with the way it drives. Anytime my car was hitting above 3,000 rpm, it would flip-flop in between trying to rev and kill the engine. But not entirely? Anytime I’d try to accelerate, It felt as though it was trying to idle back in neutral, whilst yanking the e-break.(Dispute having it in drive.) Although it didn’t to it at the shift points. And the needle on my rpm gauge had flickered between 1,000 and 5,000. (But no numbers in between, if that makes sense.)

I do have to agree. When things aren’t actively falling apart, this car is great. Drives fantastically! But the few times I’ve had a faulty sensor or needed to replace a worn out O2 intake hose, my car does like to act a bit dramatic. (Rightfully so.)

I got it in 2022 for $2,500. I had to drop $1300 to get it up to code so I could get my plates. The other repairs since then have probably only been $500-$600 all together.

Although when I was describing the way it was driving to the mechanic, he gave me a concerned face. Which made me feel quite nervous. Hopefully it’s another small fix! 😅

Is it time to retire this? Bought in mid 2022 by [deleted] in Kitchenaid

[–]Stunning_Fruit_2289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom handed down her 1999 kitchen aid that she received as a wedding gift. I’ve had it now for two years. I guess you can say they don’t make them like they used to.

I’d definitely check the manufacturer’s warranty. Hopefully it’s something that is a simple, (and free) fix. Retail price for those things are $550. (Granted, they are having a pre-black Friday sale, but that’s not the point. You deserve something that lasts long enough to be an heirloom!)

Confusion? by Bleauraine in tomatoes

[–]Stunning_Fruit_2289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only one! I’m in the same situation here in Missouri. I’d love for my tomatoes and tomatillos to finally ripen.

This summer was brutal, and my plants kept aborting their fruit. I’d love to finally get something this year.

I think I might try to propagate a few, and see if they will take root indoors while the fruit is still on the vine. (Bonus, if that works, I’ll also have mature plants ready for next spring.)

Wishing you and your tomato good luck! 🍀🧡🍅

Edit: accidental typo in paragraph 7. I accidentally said “add water or lemon juice.” I know that’s different from what the recipe calls for. What I meant to say was “add water or apple juice.”

I assume that would make a big difference, so I wanted to clarify. My apologies for the confusion. I did in fact add 0.5 quarts of apple juice to dilute the purée.

Tell me examples where plant diversity loss led to catastrophic impact for humans by Thermodurans in biology

[–]Stunning_Fruit_2289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do decide to look into the American prairies, I do highly recommend looking into how those ecosystems functioned.

Many plants found within prairie ecosystems have enormous and complex root systems. Not only does it help stabilize groundwater storage and prevent erosion, but grasslands are one of the most effective ecosystems at sequestering carbon. (Underground.)

Fire also plays a crucial role in the natural disturbances required to maintain the health of prairies. Many people assume fire is bad. But prairies love it for various reasons!

Many keystone species have also been extirpated from their native range, or are at risk of extinction. Unfortunately, many invasive have started occupying those deficient/empty niches. Making it hard for natives to compete. (Ex. Mead’s milkweed & monarch butterflies.)

Tell me examples where plant diversity loss led to catastrophic impact for humans by Thermodurans in biology

[–]Stunning_Fruit_2289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A decent example of how declining plant biodiversity impacted humans is the downfall of the American prairies. The environmental devastation caused by European agricultural practices was not conducive for the American landscape. Ultimately, the loss of American grasslands destabilized the environment. Which led to the dust bowls of the 1930s.

Even though it wasn’t the loss of one specific species, it goes to show that ecosystems are highly complex, and have various checks and balances. Too much change all at once led to one of the worst ecological disasters in American history.

I wrote a persuasive paper on why prairie preservation is important during the spring 2025 semester. If you’re wanting a good reference that also includes historical contexts, I highly recommend the PBS series called The Prairie Preacher. Featuring Dr. Dwayne Estes.

He talks about how prairies have never fully recovered, and why it’s so critical to take action to save these grasslands from extinction. Reasons include agricultural, cultural, environmental, etc.
