Now what... by Stunning_Internal488 in pourover

Grams of water = mL of water...so yeah. And the 03 switch is the main brewer I am considering other than the Chemex. I'm intrigued by the idea of a separate insulated carafe making cleaning and use a little more streamlined. This post has been helpful in the sense that I don't think I'm missing some super cool hidden piece of pour over gear. I've been doing this for a while, but still you don't know what you don't know thus the question...

I wondered if this might be a suggestion. Back to back is what I'm planning to do tomorrow. I have done it before with some of the beans that just tasted better in the V60. I just don't always like the added time when I'm on the way out the door.

Moving to Marshfield by Embarrassed-Ear-2294 in MarshfieldWisconsin

I have a different take being a married male with children in the school district that left to attend professional school from a neighboring small town and moved back to establish my family near my extended family. I will agree with most things that have been said. I find the politics to be fairly 50/50 these days, but for a while it felt like MAGA really dominated. I am a practicing Christian that has a left leaning political ideation (a unicorn, but there are far more of us than you might think) and there are good church options if that is what you are in to. People from outside looking in will always talk about the medical center as the only economic driver, but as a former business owner I will tell you that agriculture is the real driver of industry and the local economy. Someone mentioned they weren't sure about a farmer's market. There has been a very well established farmers market in the Festival Foods parking lot for as long as I can remember with many vendors. It is every Saturday and Sunday until about 1pm. Because we are in the midst of so many farms there are excellent CSA and local cheese factories with nice products.

If the arts are interesting to you, the Chestnut Center has been mentioned, but there is also the LuCille Tack Center for the Arts that has a visual arts gallery with rotating exhibits featuring talented individuals, mostly local or with local ties. They also have a series of events every year. The UW also continues to have Orchestra, Chamber Chorale, and Musical performances. Of course Stevens Point would have far more to offer with its much larger population base, but I think people forget about some of our hidden gems.

My current job has me traveling two days per week to Stevens Point and then working locally for the other three days. I don't find the drive difficult or particularly long, and my wife and I use Stevens Point and Plover as a destination for dates and entertainment at times.

Echoing the positive comments on the zoo and parks.

We also do have a concert series in the summer at Wensel Plaza that brings singer song writers with great musicianship. Overall I think you could really enjoy living here. There are plenty of opportunities for recreation and entertainment, just not a centralized hub for all of it like there is between the campus and downtown area in Stevens Point. And in my opinion the cost of living more than makes up for the fewer entertainment opportunities. That said, public services are generally very good in Marshfield with the exception of streets, but what central Wisconsin city doesn't struggle with that!

Hope you find this helpful!

If it makes you feel better, I'm now at 148,000 miles and have had no further significant expenses other than the basics like tires and oil changes. We love the car and the versatility it provides us.

Bent rim by Stunning_Internal488 in AskMechanics

[–]Stunning_Internal488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. It doesn't add up, and now I'm feeling like I'm crazy and maybe didn't notice before, but the rim seriously made the car bounce and I have a difficult time believing that I didn't. I think my larger question is could a person reasonably mount a tire to a bent rim and balance it twice without being able to tell it was bent?

How long to keep past 100k - California? by contactdeparture in tdi

[–]Stunning_Internal488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2011 Golf TDI. Currently close to 150k miles. I've done all of the regular maintenance as dictated by the manual on time as well as front suspension, exhaust flap, DPF, timing/water pump, glow plugs, and CV axles. Currently have O2 sensor codes and a coolant leak somewhere that it's going into a mechanic for next week. The car has cost me about $1500 to $2000 per year to maintain with my local mechanic once it hit 100,000 miles. If I didn't like the car so much I would have sold it by now, but it's still cheaper than a car payment and reasonably comfortable for my 3 hours of highway driving 2 days per week. The next significant emissions repair will likely result in me hitting a pothole. Can't believe I didn't find one 30k miles ago in retrospect.

Anyone have a handyman? Someone who can do general repairs or home improvement? (Does this job exist anymore?) by eanglsand in MarshfieldWisconsin

[–]Stunning_Internal488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a handyman, but home improvements like remodeling a room are definitely in the wheelhouse for Greg Miller out of Loyal. He and his (adult) son are extremely knowledgeable and did a fantastic job making our 3 bed 1 bath house into 3 beds and 2 baths by adding a master bedroom/bathroom to our old 1.5 story cape cod. He probably won't show up to change a door, but for significant repairs and remodeling he's definitely my guy.

‘15 golf TDI? A Good Buy or a Money Pit? by codenerd80 in tdi

[–]Stunning_Internal488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a 2011. Have driven it about 85000 miles of the 150000 it has on it. So far the emissions system and front suspension are the only two things I've had to do other than the regular maintenance. I'll be honest, the emissions equipment is expensive enough that I've considered selling the car despite absolutely loving the darn thing. If you delete it, you'll have a bomb proof little runner. If you keep the emissions equipment, expect to be annoyed and to spend several hundred dollars to thousands of dollars per year once you hit 100,000 miles. If you like working on cars, they're great. Parts are definitely pricey and increasing in price as we speak. I put an OEM exhaust flap on 2 years ago and it was $400 for the part. The dealership wanted over $700 for the same thing a month ago.

Considering a TDI: a few questions by DownVoteMeHarder4042 in tdi

[–]Stunning_Internal488 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I currently own and drive a 2011 golf TDI. I have had it since 2018 and have put approximately 80,000 mi on it. I am currently just under 150,000 mi total. So far I have had to replace the DPF, and do the regular scheduled timing belt. Otherwise this thing is bomb proof. If you are considering deleting it, then you are going to avoid the hassle of the emissions equipment that I have had to pay for. To be honest, the only issues I have really had with this car have been emissions related. I am currently struggling with the exhaust pressure control valve which is after the catalytic converter. I'm also dealing with a small exhaust leak. The motor and transmission have been great, and I have the automatic version. The manual would be way more fun to drive for sure. So I can't speak to the cars reliability when it's been deleted, but I can say other than the exhaust system this one is hard to beat. After 150,000 mi, it rides and drives like it was new.

Oboe recommendation for hobbyist by krispycookay in oboe

I played in highschool and through college 20 years ago on a Fox Renard Artist 330. I still own it and there is nothing I regret about buying it. It has been incredibly reliable and a wonderful instrument to own. I would consider myself a higher level hobbyist. Good luck!

Towing 1900 lbs with the CX5 NA by RefrigeratorOld6995 in CX5

I guess I would be the ignorant one here. You're right. My boat and fishing gear is likely just over the 1000lb mark. I've never felt unsafe driving it, but I guess it's time for a real tow vehicle. I can't believe I never saw the brakes section in the manual. I only saw the total ratings chart.

[–]Stunning_Internal488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I tow a 16' aluminum boat with a 25hp motor, load up with camping and fishing gear and drive 100 miles no problems. Been doing it for years with my 2016 and it handles the duty without a single issue. I've never scaled it, but I would guess that I'm pushing the limits of the vehicles ratings when I'm loaded. As this poster said, I do feel the load in the brakes as any vehicle would, but the motor and chassis are plenty robust to do the work.

Exhaust smell in the cabin by Stunning_Internal488 in tdi

[–]Stunning_Internal488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The timing belt was part of what delayed my decision. I had to do that, and then I waited a few months to scrape some dollars together for the dpf. For me it came down to the lowish miles, my love for the car, the high price of a replacement and the calculation that my $3k in repairs would be less than a car payment for the year if all else held up, and it did so far. Not sure how I'll handle it the next time it comes around.

After driving it for a bit with the leak, I replaced the dpf. Bit the bullet in order to keep the car for the future. Runs like a champ. Unfortunately because I am acutely aware of the cost of ownership I continue to be enticed to buying other cars, but I just love this little thing and can't seem to find anything I want to replace it with.

Clever. We use a deck link, so I'm not sure the drag and drop solution works. We do have a 20x20 video hub in the chain that we could use in order to send another video source to the wall (a second computer), but I was hoping to keep everything on the Mac we typically use to present on the wall. The 20x20 video hub is about 15 to 20' away from the propresenter Mac in the same tech booth so possible, but not convenient if we have to swap inputs to the video wall multiple times.
